I would like it better if you still had to go get your corpse, but just had to get close (instead of clicking on it). I dont want it to be like an arcade game but without quarters (which is what respawning at a checkpoint would mean). It would be the equivalent of having infinite health (monsters wouldn't respawn, as in multiplayer it just wouldnt work at all). I say don't click on ur corpse, because all too many times ive had duriel standing on it.
I said they are likely to, not that they will. I haven't any evidence, it just seems logical to me.
Way points enable you to teleport from one point to another, unlike checkpoints, which are merely respawning spots and nothing more. There are likely to be a lot of checkpoints, unlike way points (once again, it's just my own logic).
Hmm, good point. I haven't played D2 in a long time so I forgot about the ability to move from one waypoint to another.
Town portals just sucked. I tried to avoid using them. Visited towns at every waypoint. Sometimes I had to abuse them when my character was still so weak for some areas and it really felt cheating.
So fun to kill diablo and make 20 trips to town. Too bad diablo was magically too weak to cast a portal to visit the healer too(in his own hellish town?). Don't wanna see something like this in D3.
I dont know about increasing game play speed. It requires people to be more cautious as they cant just TP out. Which isnt necessarily bad.. but making TP just that much rarer would work too...

about what I said of blizz making great games, prove me wrong...
I think everyone knows my opinion of wow
starcraft ghost made me sad too, although I guess you could say it didnt release that, but thats the part that disappointed me.
I don't know why some people a few pages back seem to think we won't need to run back to get our corpses. This wasn't mentioned anywhere.
Also, they didn't actually say TPs were out. They just hinted that the TP mechanics would change so that you can't constantly insta-tp to town to escape and heal.
The biggest problem I see is selling off inventory junk. Obviously, the devs know about this so they'll come up with something.
Instead of casting tp just by clicking on a scroll it could be more like a ritual, something that takes time and energy, so u won't use it just to run away, but u'll be able to use it to go to town to sell your items
i allways thought my hero reads to fast... it makes me feel stupid...lol
Diablo is about FEAR...in D2, that element was missing. Remove TPs, u get more fear and increased gameplay speed
Silent Hill is about fear. Diablo is about clicking everything
Honestly, i never saw Diablo as being about fear. D1 was scary later in the game because the music is sorta "dooming" and the levels are a little creepy, but other than that, if you want fear, play Silent Hill: Homecoming or Doom 3. There's just not really anything scary about D2 until, maybe, Diablo's lair, but that's more like anticipation than fear, because you know exactly what's gonna happen when you open those seals even on the first playthrough, heh

Hmmm "when you die" - hopefully HC will have very different gameplay features regarding potions and townportals... TP's are such a fundamental lovable thing in the Diablo univers.. sry for sounding negative but this is sounding more and more like a MMPORG than a fast paced RPG. Oh well, will wait and see!
On the subject: Yes pots are lame - they can be fixed through cooldowns, I realized this as i started gaming DII again recently. TP's could also have a cooldown imo which would make them more valuable and make the player think a second time before using them.
it concerns me as well from a hardcore perspective; being trapped outside of town doesn't sound like fun; when my character is on the line i don't need things to be "more tense" and less convenient.
no potions (no rejuvs?) no tps woohoo hc is sounding like a blast. i'll go two feet in 20 minutes woah so fun!
no..
then if you're just thinking about travel time.. i hate constant worlds for one reason: getting anywhere is a huge pain in the ass.
being able to rapidly get where you want is something that made d2 different and better than other boring, tedius games with constant worlds.
so i also agree with this guy

Being able to teleport to town when necessary was one of the major things that truly separated Diablo from the other less-fun games.
edit: also to those championing slow cast tps with a cooldown.. hellgate london had them. they were not as cool as tps but would be better than nothing at all.

they'll never see me coming.. life is a sequence of tragedies, inconsistent only by fleeting, elusive moments of pleasure,
serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.
i don't know if a cool down would be nice, i just think that a ritual, including gestures (like a resemblance of black and white, of course not SO similar)... just think in the scroll of inifuss and the stones and u'll be close of what i'm thinking... anyway after the third could get boring... that's true
awesome news... even though going to town anytime made things a lot easier, it took a bit of the game away. whenever you were in a tight spot, you could just pop up a town portal and go grab some more potions or whatever. i like the idea blizz

"I'd rather chop off my ding-dong than admit that booze ain't food!"
Judging from some of the gameplay footage, some of the situations and traps you'll end up in look pretty brutal. I just hope we're able to survive without cheap tricks like running into a town portal and whatnot. Especially for hardcore mode

Who said they got rid of the WP system ?
From that it looks like the appeared WP in the gameplay video looks like the Check point system.
Also I believe TQ had this idea about check points, I think it was some type of well.

make everyone hardcore mode, and bring pk back.
Then that is fear...
