Diablo doesn't have any difficulty settings. Hellfire had difficulty settings - you could choose to play Nightmare from the start. Diablo, on the other hand, is just tripling the game. To finish the game, you have to go into Normal>Nightmare>Hell, without any choice of difficulty.
I don't know any game besides Titan Quest (which is a clone) that extends itself by recopy.
Yeah definitely I hope they implement difficulty levels. It added new life to the previous areas. Whenever I would go into Nightmare or Hell Act1, I would always think to myself .. "now THIS is what it must have really been like".
I don't like the idea, and I know we wont have to worry about it. No way they will remove difficulties from the game.
Why would they? Oh hey, lots of games now offer difficulty settings. From FPS to Hack and slash to RPG style games. I know, we will go away from this, which we started using oh so long ago, and inexplicably go back towhen games didn't offer this. Yeah, being behind the times will make sense.
The modes in D2 weren't difficulties in this sense. They were just a tool to extend gameplay and character's longevity by rehashing everything with different numbers, basically. You can beat the "game" before even reaching level 30, meaning you don't even experience all your skills. Therefore, continuing to Nightmare and Hell is a must if you want the full experience.
Those of us advocating no difficulty levels want the game to be equal in length (or longer) to the 3 difficulties, except without being a lazy rehash of all the areas using different numbers.

that would make lvling very easy then.

agreed. since they said (ill find the source somewhere, someone pm it to me if u do before me) that they're about eighty percent done and they worked five years, the equation is five years of work=80% progress. so it won't be unreleased much longer regardless of the content, meaning the more content= the better.
Imo they should take off the dificult levels from the game (normal, nightmare, hell) and instead of 4-5 acts give us 9-10 with approximately a 8-9 lvl goal per act, this would make the game much less repetitive.
sorry about the english, tryed my best
I've got the answer. Have 9-10 acts with 8-9 main quests per act, AND have 3 difficulties.
Keeps both people happy. Now you have your really long game for casuals, with an Uber-long game for hardcores.
Considering you should be able to finish the game in a timeframe close to how long it took to finish D2, what you're suggesting wouldn't work since either everybody would get to 99 fast as a mother-making-love-to:er or evil gnomes would eat the lunch you bring to work every day.
I like the few acts and the difficulties since you get to try out what you've learned at a harder difficulty. It shouldn't be a cakewalk to gain max lvl and smash face with powerful items.
Some people don't want to spend hours on end to finish a game that is supposed to have some sort of endgame. Don't forget, this is an online RPG, should you choose it. And those who would like to beat the single player campaign, should they choose it, shouldn't have to dedicate their whole life to it.
Might have exaggerated slightly, but you get my point..
The purpose of a Hack&Slash is to be a game where you Hack&Slash. In DII, you grind, after a chunk of Nightmare. Sounds a lot like WoW, or some other MMORPG. Wait, WoW has human interaction...
I want an action game. I want the full game to be full of action, and/or I don't want Nightmare/Hell to be considered portions of the full game.

Blizzard did not shorten Diablo 2 because of difficulties. The difficulties were added after the game was made.
What do you mean by that, some other company added them? LOL Blizzard kinda ran out of time with DII development, and I am pretty sure that when you run out of time things like "add difficulty copies" are big.

No. I'm saying that Blizzard did not say, "You know, we could make Act 4 longer, but screw that. We're adding difficulties anyway, so let's forget that idea." The difficulties were added after the fact. My point is that difficult settings do nothing to harm the game. Again, I am all for Blizzard making a really long core game; why not add difficulties to extend it? I just keep hearing complaints of "I want all the skills/loot but not all the longevity required to get them". I know many people who appreciate that the game doesn't require extensive skill-digging in order to conquer it (in Normal, at least). For those who wish to press forward, Nightmare and Hell are there. For those who don't, that's fine too. I have yet to read a single argument in this thread (or anywhere else, for that matter) that shows how "damaging" difficulty settings are.
How the hell do you know why did Blizzard did this or that? How do you know the Nightmare and Hell are not ways to make the game longer because it's easier than making Act 4 longer and more varied?
You are talking like Nightmare and Hell are simple additions. They are not. They do not require any artistic thinking, but they do require balancing, thus, they require time, time that could be use to balance extra Acts and/or a more original generator.
Nightmare and Hell are not optional. They are a part of the game. You have to finish them to complete the game, to test your skills, to get to PvP. They are forced on players while they do not add anything to the game in the artistic sense.

Because the game was complete. No parts of the story were missing, and there really isn't much you can do with Act 4 anyway.

And you keep talking like they require absurd amounts of time to implement. They don't. Run through the game, make a few tweaks, run through it again. Collecting statistical data is straightforward and easy. Besides, why do you think they patch the game later on? Balance is an ongoing process, and Blizzard recognizes that.

They are optional. Again, you are complaining again about how you don't want to go through the same trouble that everyone else went through. No one forces them upon you; only your undying ego and desire to compete in PvP are what "force" them upon you.
I like that view of the difficulty levels !!! Maybe that's the reason gameplay video seemed to be somehow blueish to the fans... but in hell... it's not blueish at all.
Okay, my previous comment wasn't supposed to be taken seriously.
Now on the other hand, this one could be a real solution.
How about making DIII similar to DII, you know, Normal Diff lvl 1-30, NM 30-60ish, Hell 60-100. But in each of the higher difficulties, the game could change a little bit.
Like stated above, the color scheme will change to darker and more fiery. Add in maybe 2 new UBER hard quests per act, add in a couple different monsters per act, secret cow level available only in Hell, and then have an alternate ending. Possibly where the heroes are slain to Diablo, and D conquers Sanctuary.
This would let the casual players "finish the game", but it leaves some reward for the hardcore players to challenge themselves.
I dislike Nightmare because it's a copy of Normal. I dislike Hell because it takes ages to kill anything without farming.
I wouldn't mind both Nightmare and Hell IF they were not mandatory for properly using your skills, and for PvP, and for best items, which is impossible without removing them all together.
I would also not mind them if they were properly different (kinda what was done with the Cathedral artwork), and if monsters were powerful in some other way other than immunities to everything and way too much health.
"What i do reccomend though is 6 Acts norm,nm,hell and then add another 3 Acts for the next Expansion." You don't get the point, do you?
3 difficulties = shorter main game...
I definently do get the point. I do not believe that having norm,nm,hell shortend the game at all. I believe the acts were written way before the difficulty lvls. I also added 6 acts so that means its longer then the first D2 and then said add 3 more acts in the Expansion pack which makes it even more longer. I really dont understand how you concluded to "you just dont get it"

Sounds awesome. Unfortunately now that's a game that we won't see for another 8 years. That'd take forever to complete.
