I kinda like the floating numbers... probably showing how much exp you get from each kill... i don't think it detracts from the game at all... it also shows "block" when a monster blocks your attack.
The thing is, there are other ways to show this, such as different animations and sounds, but floating numbers is the worst way to do it.
That's an opinion.
Would it be better if they just had a toggle for the numbers?
Edit: Just noticed there IS a special animation for when the numbers hit. If you watch closely in the ghoul scene whenever a number pops up he smashes the ghoul and parts go flying.
I don't understand why some people here like the floating numbers.
The damage numbers are just an abstraction of how good your character is. I would prefer to see an indication of my characters successes and failures through sound and animations.
The whole premise of the game is you are a barbarian, or witch doctor, or whatever fighting evil monsters, the premise is not that you are a walking bunch of numbers attacking other number bunches.
So to reiterate my point I would prefer to know my barb just hit a critical organ of a monster then that the computer randomly generated a particularly high number value.
Lets embrace new technology, in the past things like critical hits had to be indicated by text but now computer graphics is advanced enough to represent things like crits and blocking as animations and sounds.
Yes I have played and enjoyed games like Titan quest, but rather then appreciate the floating numbers, I instead took no note of them.
The calculations are still the same though, it doesn't change anything about the gameplay mechanics, in fact, D2 is based on nothing but numbers. You now have a numerical insight to the damage output though, something that visually lets you know what just happened. Having one thing doesn't mean the other won't be included, in other words, I'll be damned if we don't hear the hitting and blocking of attacks like we have up until now.
Just because you have floating numbers doesn't mean you have to know about your enemie's precise health either, it servers as an indicator of your efficiency in current situations, nothing more and nothing less.
But surely if you don't know their health then it is a totally useless indicator, its a number, but what use is a single number without being able to compare it to others. Do the numbers really help you and do you really need the information, I would say no, so why are they there cluttering up the screen?

But aren't the floating numbers and detailed animations providing the same information anyway?

You would still get that information in the attribute screen anyway, you don't need it in floating number format.
I guess if you want the floating numbers thats your prerogative, but I'll toggle them off thank you.
Ok, im 99% positive they will add a feature so you Don't have to see the Numbers pop up, Another Thing i play WoW... im also a huge fan of diablo series, now the graphics look absalutly nothing Like WoW, inside the Dungeon looks fine outside... theres a sun in the sky offcourse its going to be bright, unlesss theres clouds... and just fyi everyone that QQ's about Colours sound like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzG_oHDLZdc
The reason why Diablo2 did not have floating numbers in my opinion is because with floating numbers around, people will forget that this is supposed to be a hack n slash game and will start trying to get the highest "number" possible.
So if you can't get crits of X amount then you're a noob, thus making the game less enjoyable to the people who don't care about numbers and just want to hack n slash.

The game is going to be less enjoyable for those people anyway because of various gits who go around screaming "HC is for pros", "if you don't have Enigma you can't PvP" and all sorts of rubbish that people who have nothing to do but play one game all day long would be saying. So, floating numbers won't really add much to it.
Wow this has to be the dumbest complaint I have ever seen for a game.
Most people like to see how much damage they are doing as opposed to just guessing and smashing things QQ more.
I think you've topped it though.
You can open your character pane and see the amount of damage you can deal: x-x .
And do I really have to know the exact number of damage I've dealt. All the monsters already have a health bar.

lol it can still easily be a ranger since who said you cant shoot arrows at melee distance xD

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
I don't think numbers are really required for crits, but I never really knew if I was critting in D2. There needs to be a better visual or audio feedback so I know what's going on. But the numbers might eventually get annoying or feel too gamey and hurt the immersion.
man just want to have a feeling that he is playing DIABLO game, not some alien shooter...
I don't remember Alien Shooter having floating numbers, either....

And I dont like idea of that health things that levitates after you kill group, they say that there will be no more potions or something like that.
Please review your information before making mistaken claims. Potions are still in the game. Your argument about arcades stops here.
Floating numbers won't make it an arcade, and last time I checked, there is no "double kill" or anything on there. Before you say "imagine if", let's look at what is actually IN the game at the moment. I did not notice the numbers until this thread...

Meh I don't think it's exp, just critical hits.
If it showed exp that'd be WAY too many numbers.
Well, it's a sure sign the Assassin will not be coming back, I suppose some people might be happy about that.
There'd be numbers all over the screen!
Words I hate in Gaming Culture:
Epic
Hardcore
E-Sports
The assassin might be back just not so much crit oriented. (I know a assassin without crit kinda seems meh, but...)
Also it might be able to be turned off, they could of just had it on to show what COULD all be activated.
I think the floating numbers are cool i like to know how much damage i do.
