this could severely back fire. its an amazing idea to tier the chests and sounds like a lot of fun hunting them but think ahead to when the hacks and all that bull shit comes out...Right now in LOD you can download and run auto tele and baal/pindle bots that seek out targets and eliminate them. map hack reveals entire RANDOM maps and reveals shrines and quests and WPs.
My point is that eventually hack will come out, its inevitable i see these chests becoming the new loot loops that bots run
i know blizzard is really creative and hopefully has come up with better cheat deterents but if theres money to be made in the real world from selling items a hack will arise

Diablo III's engine is far more complex than Diablo II. I'm not saying that it's impossible to make a hack, but definitely much harder and less efficient.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
I always liked the feeling in Zelda whenever I found a new chest, because I knew that it was likely that I would find some cool new item. I never got that feeling from Diablo I or II - chests were more like a slight hope of finding something good.
But I liked the item-quests in DI like Arkaine's Valor, The Butcher or Lachdanan, because the quest rewards are a cool unique weapon or armour. DII never had item-rewards for quests except for the Horadric Staff and Amulet, but they were quickly taken away from us by the end of the act anyway.
You can never say how something will work. With the partially static environments and and dungeons you don't realize that you're grading one feature in the viewpoint of Diablo II. You can never argue with a game developer's choice until you have played the game. You don't know how these chests will work with separate prospects of the game.

The idea of chests being a more integral aspect of the item system in Diablo 3 makes for a novel experience, indeed. To bring in a comment, I was reading an earlier interview and one of the designers stated that a major drop would drop pieces of equipment for each class in the party. My question is, will the chests themselves drop equipment for each class of the party?

one of the best questions i've seen in this thread lately.
And now that you mentioned it, i'd really like to know that too!

I think we're pretty safe to assume that is the case.
The idea of giving separete drops to people is to discourage competition between players and increase cooperation. Creating drops that are shared by all will only benefit the player who opened the chest, which would once again most often be the melee fighters since they run first, while not giving anything to the ranged players.
At the very least, major chests should drop for each player individually if the system is put in place for this reason.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
i never carried keys with me because they took up the room of a vauable small charm. so whenever i ran into a locked chest i would just tp to town and buy a key from the merchant guys and just go back in and open the chest lol. now with no locked chests i don't needa do this and can save like 10 seconds each time
Though I like the idea of not having locked chests, I'm sentimental in a way regarding them. It only makes sense that better treasures would be in chests that are more of a nuisance to get into. It also makes sense that as you progress through the game that simple things like opening chests would be a little more difficult. Maybe the locks will go, but I hope that something else will take their place like a chest guardian or a trap that reduces running speed or recovery.
Imo the idea of there being a locked chest in D2 was kinda pointless, think about you are a person with weapons... could you not just smash it open? haha. Or what ever other spell to open it with brute force?

what will happen is that these nice features will be taken out.
no more random chests.
for those of us that start playing from the beginning, perhaps we will benefit from hack-free play for a time.
chests are designed for the new players.
the best items should still come from monster kills.

why would the best items not come from monster kills?
Never always.

the impact of the new chests on the game.
talk about that topic, which you sidestepped with Teo.
