Bashiok has responded to a comparison between Steam and World of Warcraft achievements versus Diablo 3's. The difference between the three is clear: Diablo 3 is not an MMO. -- source
Bashiok: Steam achievements are generally based around small, situational, skill, or long-term goals in short "round" or level based FPS'. So obviously achievements in an MMO are going to be vastly different, and can cover a much wider range of goals from small and fun, to long and involved, and yes even to the impossible.
For us completionists we're going to be frustrated by not being able to have everything. But part of the system is specifically to show off where you've been, how long you've been playing, and what you've accomplished. I'm going to have to deal with the fact that I wasn't everywhere or did everything at some point in time. I'm going to have to focus on the goals I can achieve instead of those I can't. There's no point crying over milk that was spilled two years ago that I just found all dried and crusty under my refrigerator.
That's World of Warcraft though. It's a persistent world and moves and evolves and changes with patch to patch, and expansion to expansion. There's a lot more area for there to be achievements that were attainable at one time, but due to that evolution of the game - are no longer possible.
Diablo III isn't an MMO, it doesn't evolve in the same way, and so there's far less chance for there to be an achievement rendered impossible due to game updates.
I want at least two expansions for D3! I think achievements are pretty much worthless, though.
Unless these achievements give you rewards like bonus equipment or titles or etc, I would tend to agree
And yeah, more than one expansion would be lovely. Maybe they can eventually put in all the old chars hehehehe Well, ok, maybe only the ones that didn't suck. Lol but then they'd have to take out the barbarian with the first exp pack
achievmentsin d3 = bleh sounds like another thing theyve taken from wow and put into d3.
I want at least 2 exps or one awesome exp for this game, and im hoping that if the nec is coming back in one of them that the corpses stay so we can corpse explosion yet again.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Sigh there goes hours of my life. I am a 'completionist' too. Haha, they're gonna have start Blizzard Achievenment Rehab a few month's after release... Hi I'm Tylos and i'm a completionist!

“There’s no going back now,” he said during an interview in a Manhattan hotel where Blizzard was showcasing their newest games. “We’re very happy with how the art style is. The art team’s happy. The company’s happy. We really like this art style, and we’re not changing it.” - Blizzard.
I personally love achievements. But what I would like to know if they are aiming for the Microsoft point system or not. That would explain if this is a natural progression certain games undergo before they are ported to x360 or not.
I don't really care too much but if D3 would ever hit the consoles, I would definitely want one for my x360.

maybe the new MMO they are working on "is just" WoW 2.0:rolleyes::offtopic::rolleyes:

WoW 2.0 was out years ago.
it will be like CoD4
you know because they just absorbed the publishers
WoW is a great game actually (this may have cost me my argument for some people, I know. F*** them). But even if you don't like it, it doesn't mean that any and everything that is in that game must suck, I mean, they do games, right? That's their job, if there's something they thought of making in one game that sounds like it's going to work in another, then why not use it?
For instance, the skill tree system in D2 came from the tech trees from the RTS games, and I don't hear anyone complaining.
I love blizzard, they will always have my money, I would pay 100 dollars each for sc2, d3, and their next mmo...
but they are second to valve
when blizzard makes games that sprout games that sprout games, sure they can contend
but blizzard still has the smell of big business, preventing modding, while valve lets people use the source engine to make their own games and get people involved in gaming
you can't actually compare them. valve has fps' mostly (half-life, team fortress, portal is a bit different) and blizz has WoW, starcraft and diablo which are not so similar. But if I had to choose I would pick blizz, because it seems that valve will sell their asses to EA and then it's all over for gordon and alex... but don't get me wrong, I do think, no, I do know that Half-Life 2 is the best shooter there is and ever was...
btw, did blizz prevent modding in WoW?
no, valve got involved with EA because of the console ports, they know if they ever went with EA they would lose 100% of their customers
also, lol you never hear of vivendi games?
they are a more crooked gaming business than EA, poor sierra went from tribes to disney games because of it
WoW is a mmo, UImods are not mods like garrysmod or TS
About completions..... I can take 'em or leave 'em, I guess. I always skip over Khalim's Relics and just kill the Council and get the WP for Durance from someone else. I do have a full Trang's set though, so I guess they're mildly important to me.
What I'm finding most interesting is all the WoW comparisons that seem to be creeping into the discussions. My opinion is they are 2 seperate games, always have been, and always SHOULD HAVE been. Now we're seeing this melding of game philosophies, and I can't help but be a bit disturbed by it. As Diablo fans we've been forced to wait so long for this next installment of our beloved game that we seem to have lost sight of the reasons Diablo is our favorite series of games. It was always different. It was a game unto it's own. Single player, multi player, hey let's do a quick Baal run, these things were attractive about the game. With almost every new announcement Blizz makes regarding D3, it seems more and more of a Diablo-WoW hybrid, and in my eyes, that cheapens the game. I'll still buy it, I truely hope to enjoy it, and maybe even become a "completionist", but it is in no way what I had hoped for as far as remaining true to Diablo roots.

There is a place on Earth for all God's creatures...... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy...^_^
Thank the gods. My main gripe with what WoW has become is that it's impossible to be the best at something, or have everything, because certain circumstances have rendered it impossible, be it because of card game codes, WWI goodie bags, CE's (which is.. excused) or simply quests rendered void or impossible due to game updates.
Exacly. It seems natural in an MMO, and people always feel better if they have old items and achievments that are no longer obtainable. However for the rest of us suckers who never got a chance to get them, it just feels horrible.
That's a major reason why I stopped playing AdventureQuest and Dragonfable. Everything in those shitty games becomes unavailable unless you play 24/7.

Yeah, I want achievements in the game.. Something else to do other than PvP, restarting a new character or getting the best gear possible after you complete the game
good point, It does give you other things to do rather than just co-op story and PVP. I'd like to see this very much

If you get personally attacked by letters through the internet its a good thing to always have a box of tissues and a band-aid around.
you're welcome... I didn't realise that you know everything oh mighty one. I will now just return to my quarters and punish myself for having an opinion different than your own... /whipping sounds/
What he said was common knowledge for any Steam user. Even I know that, and I don't do much more than play their games. Also, most of what he said was factual, not opinion, so that lame comeback there doesn't work too well for your side of the arguments, if one can even call it that. The only opinion was when he claimed you to be dumb.
Valve may make different genres of games than Blizzard, but what I believe waddlez was thinking about when he said they were superior is their skills in game design and receptiveness to their community. This is the reason for the claim that if Valve went to produce MMOs, RTS, and RPGs that they would achieve the same success and critical acclaim that they do with their current products. I'd love to elaborate on this, but I can get pretty long-winded (which I am somewhat already), so I'll spare you.
In an attempt to stay on-topic with the thread, I'll say that I like achievements. I had to click the link to see what they were talking about with the WoW achievements and their apparent "unfairness". Well, those are achievements for ya. I'm a completionist, but one with some common sense and rationality. I mean, some of those WoW achievements were really something, as in, they showed that the player did something out of the ordinary. I love the system in Steam, as well, but I hate what the more superficial completionists do with it. I'm talking about those "achievement servers" the losers go to when they lack the skills to legitimitely attain them. I'm hoping D3 won't really have these problems, but then again, with achievements comes people like said losers who completely have no comprehension of what an achievement is supposed to be.
Ahhh, I'm just upset that my brother completely invalidated my honorable Pyro by entering one of these servers and making everything (records and achievements) complete BS. Now I'm getting off-topic again...

I know what you mean. But I imagine there will be some significat Ahcievments to strive towards.
For example, there could be an achievment to beat Chaos Tristram (for comparisons sake). Hoewver, there could also be an achievment which would require you to beat it solo. Obviously impossible for some character builds in D2, but this is just to give you an idea.
Perhaps some quest in D3 involved defeating a powerful demon in a group, but in order to prevent rushing, you first have to complete a quest alone. The quest wouldn't be nearly as hard as the boss, but would require you to have decent gear and level first, thereby assuring that only those who should really be killing the boss are actually capable of it.
