Like many have said, Diablo would not exist without Mephisto, he's the oldest of them, and something about his "magical" appearance makes him seem evil. He's also bony and has rotten skin, while Diablo holds a humanoid appearance. I almost expect Diablo III: Reign of Mephisto. I mean, Baal had his own game, and Diablo obviously did too.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
I dont mean to be a pain in the ass but, I just have to mention it
Satan and Lucifer are not the same thing
About the disscussion anyway, it really depends on which way you look at evil. Like Fingolfin said
Evil is a measure of your willingness to visit evil upon other beings
Or is evil proportional to the amount of sin? and from what perspective is that sin defined? I would say Mans perspective
Which brings up the question, which demon has sinned more against man and caused more death and pain... Then it gets tricky...
Also, of the 3, his name is the only one that is an actual name for "The Devil", "Satan", "Lucifer" whomever.
As I said before;
-Baal is another name for Beelzebub, which is another name for Lucifer, which is another name for Satan. The most evil creature.
-Mephisto is derived from Mephistopheles, which is another name for Lucifer, which is another name for Satan. The most evil creature.
-Diablo is spanish for devil, The Devil is another name for Lucifer, which is another name for Satan. The most evil creature.
But that depends somewhat on your source of course. Mephistopheles and Beelzebub are often seen as a different demon from Lucifer or Satan.
Yet, Beelzebub (Be'elzebub "Lord of Flies") is originally the name of a Philistine god, but is also used in the New Testament as a synonym for Satan.
So you can go either way with that.
The Prime Evils are top dogs when it comes to evilness, neither one of them truly out ranks the other two. Mephisto is seen as the most senior one and that may led people to believe he is the most evil, yet Baal is the most destructive, he will often take great enjoyment in the killing of humans (and possibly his own minions too), Diablo is well more the "star of the show" and that may led people to believe he is the most evil, plus there is that really awesome quote about his powers of terror.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
why was it that when the Three reunited, the plan was for M3phisto to defend the portal, Diablo to gather his armies, and Baal to corrupt the stone & open the gateway for Diablo's armies to ravage Sanctuary? If they were equally as evil, why did they have to seperate, making it easier to pick them off, 1 by 1? Is that because it makes solo play possible? Or could there be some sort of motive behind the plan???
Also, this whole discussion depends on the definition of evil. There are so many variations...
Precisely. It's such an ambiguous word. We could argue possibly which is the most powerful. But their power seems to wax and wane depending on their current physical state, location, and whether they are united or not.

I've always viewed Diablo as a single playergame that just happens to have multipler.
All the NPCs say hero when referring to you, not heroes, NPCs in BGII do make notice of the fact you are traveling in a group and refer to you specifically if you are soloing, this does not happen in Diablo. It's alwaus "proceed Hero..." It is good to see you again hero..." even if someone in your party is standing right next to you, and has just gone through everything you just did.
Diablo is at its core, about the lone hero taking the forces of Hell.
Final movie for D1 is a single character putting the soulstone his his or her forehead. The epilogue movie in D2 is a single hand smashing the soulstones, no other persons or part of another person are visible.

If we are to guess, then there are of course several possible ideas.
That Baal went to Mount Arreat is no surprise, he possessed the body and memories of Tal Rasha, and so knew where to find the Worldstone. So that's not really strange.
Mephisto probably stayed behind, because he knew Kurast the best. Any attempt to follow them would have to be stopped there, and since he was in control of the entire Zakarum, he of course stayed to delay the process.
And Diablo, being the last one, went into Hell to rally their forces and perhaps also deal with Belial and Azmodan. It could be argued that Diablo is the most powerful/most suited for such a mission, but I think it was merely because the other two excelled at their chosen tasks.
As for the evil debate, it was a slightly futile question. Nevertheless, many replies here have been very constructive and insightful
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I guess to close it out since we're at a proverbial stalemate, I remind you guys that the statement Tal Rasha made is completely subjective and from his point of view during the Inquisition to capture the Three

Was something like that ever hinted at? That would be rather interesting to see, a trinistone...lol.. (yes, I realize that their stones, except Baal's, have all been acountably destroyed in the game, but I don't really know anything about them outside the game. I haven't been priviledged to read the books yet.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchy_of_devils Lists them as seperate as seperate entities.

I'd say Baal. I mean, he is the Lord of Destruction!
I'd say Mephisto. I mean, he is the Lord of Hatred!
I say they're equal.
Although if you look at the length of their titles...
Baal, Lord of Destruction
Mephisto, Lord of Hatred
Diablo, Lord of Terror
I think Baal and Mephisto are trying to make up for something.
