Even though the game itself is not out yet, I began wondering what the new class will be for the first expansion. I speculate the addition of a more or less of more sinister class than a Demon Hunter, one that had been damaged by the demons so much that, he/she only thrives for vengeance and is chaotic good/neutral in its nature, that the vengeance is all that matters for the pain that have been inflicted.
Introducing the Dreadnite:The Impending Nightfall of the Burning Hells
"The Paladins of the Zakarum, once the paragon of hope in the dreaded lands of Sanctuary were a beacon of light that swept through darkness and vanquished the bane of life. The Dreadnite is born, and vengeance on the evil has been sworn..."
Think of a shield and heavy armor wielding Warlock that can subdue lesser demons and transform into a form resembling greater demons, while can hold his/her ground against the hordes of demons as an indomitable fortress. Analogous to a combination of Death Knight and Warlock, yet much more anti-hero.
However, it should be noted that, contrary to DKs who want to be redeemed or Warlocks that pact with demons for greater power and for protection the of their land/nation/faction, this class of "hero" is a pure manifestation of hatred and vengeance, a being that won't stop until the Burning Hells cease to exist.
As a sidenote, don't confuse this with a Demon Hunter, who only really hunt demons for vengeance and are pretty much righteous in their cause and such, whereas, a Dread Knight is a demonic abomination and a killing machine, anything between them and a demon is only an obstacle to be cleared.
"A Dreadnite will not stop until the Burning Hells cease to exist"
Believe it or not I am actually expecting someone like this for the expansion. It has similiarties, and would share different chars equipment which is something important to remember. When a new character is introduced it ca not take all of the gear from 1 other char type, it has to be split between two or three and have some of their own (ONLY Weapons). The name will be completely different and not as specific, more generic (if that makes sense) but you have the right idea fortune teller.......what do you see now??

with all the QQ about blizz turning D3 into wow why are people now trying to turn it into wow?
Can you be more clear with your opinion?
I have given the example of DK and Warlock combination as a reference due to how their mechanics work, yet, in itself the class is nothing like them regarding its lore.
Contrary to DKs who want to be redeemed or Warlocks that pact with demons for greater power and for protection the of their land/nation/faction, this class of "hero" is a pure manifestation of hatred and vengeance, a being that won't stop until the Burning Hells cease to exist.
Diablo is awesome and WoW is awesome. If you take something from both of them and make something new, well.. its gonna be Super Awesome ^.^. Makes sense?

Suggest making a new class referring it to a Death Knight and you're going to get a lot of negative feedback I'm afraid, it seems to be the way of most forums
I'll admit I'm not entirely convinced by your description, but you do have an interesting take on the Shifter aspect. A shapeshifter is definitely missing from the current D3 line up, and aside from the already done druid, I couldn't think what else might turn up. A warlock style class that can shift into demons would be an interesting take on it.
The other holes in the current char format are the bladed weapon users. There's really only the Barb (maybe hirelings) that is going to use axes, maces, two handers etc, so there's a large gap of the item pool that is likely to end up salvage food. If your DK/Warlock idea uses these weapons, maybe a shield, then it could be a viable suggestion.
As I have stated, they will be able and going to use shields("can hold his/her ground against the hordes of demons as an indomitable fortress")
In addition, the thing is, the Demonic Knight is just too cartoonish for a name, and Death Knight as a term is not fitting, as the class not really based on necromancy, though it still relates to first generation Death Knight seen in Warcraft, with the Warlock aspect on abilities being stronger and the heavy armor equip-being more related with a plate class. I could have named it as a dreadlord, but that wouldn't really be fitting as the name is to be highly confused with the Nathrezim of WC.
While I've never cared if there were similarities between WoW and D3 (duh, blizzard), I do however feel your idea is too close to death knight in name and style. The death, or dread part of your idea (worlocky, pets) is all but embodied in the WD. The knight part however is not. Sword and shield is viable and might be needed for the barb in inferno (with some builds) I do understand there's no actual knight / warrior. Unfortunately I doubt we'll ever see the paladin, as his defining feature (auras) are already with the monk. Also a regular warrior is already in the barb. But, since besides the barb all the classes are hybrids of at least 2 of the older diablo classes, maybe we'll see another hybrid. I'm always voting on a pally / druid mix. A nature based character with ranged spells and melee combat, maybe with some attacks that grant bonuses with shields.

Sigh, the general misconception behind DKs being mistaken for the classical Dark/Black Knight concept...
The thing is we never really had a warlock class, as it is pretty much a considerable taboo to pact with demons due to how that never really turned out to be advantageous for the "hero".
Death Knight is considerably a plated Lich and Necromancer, thus, a master of death. Runemaster concept tied with it is a niche feature. Stating the pet usage making it similar to a Dread Knight is going as far as to consider Warlocks and Hunters as the same as well. However, I see the main concern regarding the name, and will change it.
I had a tendency for such a character design(Nature+holy), however, after the events of LoD and demons invading Kehjistan and such, to the point of decimating any form of druidism, the idea seems pretty baseless. However, if it is developed into possibly something to hold its ground in the current lore, why not?
Effective from now, the name Dread Knight is changed to Dreadnite, abbreviated as DN for convenience.
That will not be really surprising to see some kind of "fallen champion". I don't know how they are gonna implent it, or how they will make the lore about it. There's only one class working with a pet, that could give another option for another character.
The pet function is minor as the Dreadnite assumes his/her demon form through consuming the "pet", stronger the consumed demon stronger the form.
They already stated that development of the DH was too sinister in the beginning and they had to change it, also that the DH was about as dark as they were going to get for d3 chars, sooo no.

Not going to lie, this seems like a killer idea! I would really look forward to something like this in an expansion pack for Diablo III. I really feel like they could take this idea and perfect it with their own signature. I hope they see your idea and take the hint for sure!!!!
I want to see something like the mesmer from Guild Wars. That class was basically the punishment class. Most of the spells involved certain conditions like: if you attack you take x damage every time, every time you miss you take x damage, if you don't attack within the next 3 seconds you take x damage. Then they had mana burns and interrupts. The only thing the class was missing that fits it's theme was some kind of mind control.
They already stated that development of the DH was too sinister in the beginning and they had to change it, also that the DH was about as dark as they were going to get for d3 chars, sooo no.
The character is not really darker than say a Witch Doctor, though it is more sinister. Probably, how the game is to be received after release regarding the tone of its setting. If it is realized to be realized mild, then this kind of class is to be the exact thing the game will need regarding the darkening of the setting, though this all to relative.
I would want to comment on how the game should be darker, yet having no participation in beta that only really covered 1/3 of the first act I can't really make a statement, and neither should you.
Now bringing to you, the death knight, uehueheuhehueghegeugh.
No but seriously, conceptually death knights were my favorite class by far in wow so I could bite. I still want a rogue-like character, despite having the monk and demon hunter who both have a few rogue-like qualities. To be able to lurk around in stealth and ambush infernal pit lords, vanish in a smoke bomb, have poisons dripping from their weapons, and pin point enemy weakness with their daggers and agility, while exploiting that agility to have much higher evasion in trade for poorer quality armor.

However, as I continuously remind it, this is not a Death Knight, don't let the similarity in name and the concept fool you.
I haven't stated this, but a Dreadnite upon consumption of a demon, gets empowered to a demon form(Dependent on demon type consumed, almost anything lesser than boss-level demons), and has prolongment on this effect, similar to how Archon form works for Wizards.
Additionally, contrary to other classes, Dreadnites rejuvenate(health and resources alike) primarily from eating demon flesh, using Demonic Fury or Fel Energy as their primary resource to fuel their attacks.
Here's a more story-oriented introduction of the class:
It was neither a single nor hundreds of Paladins that were left after the events of the Worldstone Shattering.
Thus, with the demons beginning to roam more and more freely over the lands of Sanctuary through the course of 20 years, it has gotten easier for them to capture the remaining of Paladins. The capturing of these disciplined and highly capable warriors that had given trouble to demons for long is sensible as Paladins would prove to be possible vessels of an elite force that can champion demonic forces.
Following this agenda, the captured Templar, Kormac was the lucky one, probably captured the last and saved the first, had been saved from the terrible fate that many of his comrades had and were to suffer...
"Every single unlucky Paladin left unsaved, was to be called as Dreadnite, the champions of hell. They had been subjected to unparalelled torture, where their body had been tortured until all life had left it followed by an unholy exorcism to embalm their spirit in demonic essence, corrupting it and to be reanimated within a newer body, until the subject had submitted.
The demonic essence had provided empowerment, and it was the flaw of their plan that was to backfire on them.
Every consequent application had resulted in them growing in power.
However, they had underestimated the heroic will of a paladin, those of whom that were older than the rest of the others had seen so many atrocities of demons that they had perseveared. Bidding their time, on the border of insanity, some of them had waited, to exact retribution.
However, every day they were growing weaker.
It was at the very moment that these fallen knights had sensed the drawing of the demonic energies to themselves that they had awakened, it was not the chant of Anu they heard anymore, it was the scent of darkness they could smell.
It was time.
They had broken their chains, and relentlessly killed their torturers...
...within their hunger they leaned on the carcass of cultists they had slain. However, the hunger was not quenched.
In its rage the abomination fled into the night, only to encounter other demons. Its mind filled with one thought "Succulent", and plunged into them...
...the hunger, it was suppressed. Upon licking the bones of what was left of these demons, the memories hit the fallen knight. The beast was more human now, yet the pain struck it. The very pain that was carved to its very soul by them...
...the demons... ...it wanted to cause them the very pain that it had been forced to endure... ...and to consume them.
Upon this moment with its roar piercing the night, the Dreadnite had sworn to avenge the fallen knight...
...and it will not stop until the Burning Hells, ceases to exist.
Is this some combination of witch/DH/paladin ? why would you have kinda similar classes to what we have now (except paladin). I think diablo 3 misses some kind of druid like form changing character
1- It is not a combination of WD/DK/Paladin or combinations of other things in how it is done in its retrospective.
The class is either:
- A shield and small weapon wielding armored being, a fallen knight that can protect itself from harm's way through using demonic magic while still capable of afflicting its enemies with this same magic to a minor extet.
- A relentless abomination that can subdue lesser demons(Demons of ranks below that of the Seven: Ones spawned from Tathamet's heads) to do its bidding, or can just consume them right away to enhance itself in power with a temporary demon form transformation where they function as a brutal, virtually unstoppable killing machine while wielding either of its "claws of fury" or polearms twisted with demonic magic.
2- See above related with transformation.
3- If it analogous examples you seek to understand this class, it shares the properties of a Monk+Druid+Witch Doctor+Barbarian+Wizard and a Warlock+Paladin, in terms of how its mechanics would work. However, it only partakes in using some of the iconic or non-iconic abilities of those classes that are fit with its concept. Thus it is a new class.
In a way this "anti-hero" will be progressing to slay demons and their masters alike for taking exacting vengeance on what they had done to it and for satisfying its apetite for demon blood/flesh. However, to be able to follow on the leads of these demons, it will follow in the steps of ordinary Nephalem, hence, will simply conceal itself as a "Black Knight" to be more "social" with these people.
