There are no signs of ladder so far, and I personally doubt it. But if something like this would be created you wouldn't hear about if before Blizzcon, so come back in November :-)
If there's a ladder system, I hope it has nothing to do with the Diablo 2 "style". It should be an optional ladder that doesn't segregate the playerbase. For example, if they add an Arena, they could have "seasons" for PvP and PvE Challenges.
Also, a ladder would be a slap in our face --- they announced a Sharagon and hyped us to go grind some more levels. Imagine the backlash when people learn all their time spent for Sharagon was wasted because it doesn't carry over to Ladder...

Please explain how exactly you'd have a ladder system that didn't segregate the playerbase? The whole point of ladder is to start over from scratch, play with only other people that's competing in ladder, and race for highest paragon / best gear.
If they felt like making that an option to click when creating a new character, I'd be down.

Ladder would be inside SC/HC. You can choose to participate with your current characters. Ladder and NL could play together.
This ladder wouldn't be about "re-leveling new characters" --- it would be about doing challenges that require good gear to complete. Instead of having to re-farm all your gear, you use your farmed gear to improve your personal high-score.
If not for the ladder only items, why play on ladder?
Ruksak answered it, but I'm going to answer it also.
If the ladder ranking system isn't sufficient incentive to play ladder then what you're asking for is "special snowflake mode" with "special loot for me that's not for those filthy casual scrubs."
The reward for ladder play is the competition for the rankings. Period. End of story.
I have yet to hear one reasonable explanation as to why ladders need rewards above and beyond the ranking system to get people to play it.
People who play a lot already have a massive advantage in this game, they don't need another thing that makes them have even more advantage.

Uhm, i don't think that actually qualifies as a ladder. Personally, if they do introduce one, i hope it is exactly like in d2, maybe make it self found. The ah plays too big of a role in d3 and will continue to do so in RoS. Come RoS, you would be able to gear up without it, but it would still be much faster to simply use it. Without a ladder every single challenge that you would like in a ladder would be facerolled because of the insane items that you can buy with money/ gold.
Diablo 2 Ladder = Exclusive content, items and runewords...
As long as it employs the exact same loot table, I'm down. Those ladder-only items are bullshit, we have no need for such silliness in this game.
Silliness? Why do you feel that way? According to gamescom legendaries are not BoA. Those beautiful build changers and probably the best items in the game will be listed on the AH and within a few months, every single one of them will be bought with gold/ money. If the ladder that we've heard rumors about is not going to be self found, the only way to keep the game fresh and interesting would be to have a few BoA items, unique to the ladder, to provide an incentive to actually play the ladder and farm. If not for the ladder only items, why play on ladder?
I've said this a million times it seems and it always gets dodged. If people want ladder so bad......then that's your incentive to play ladder.
If ladder isn't so appealing by itself, then why do people want it?
How about Ham Sandwich mode, where your character appears to be a 6 foot tall ham sandwich? BUT WAIT.....in Ham Sandwich mode....you get special OP Ham Sandwich only items.
Good luck competing in ladders with botters. There was supposed to be a ladder reset on Diablo 2 a couple of months ago. I was hyped to join in and play some on the ladder. I didn't have time to play the first day (because I had a test coming) but when I log in on battlenet aprox 10-18 hours after the ladder reset, people were already at level 80~... That made me lose my hype.
This is another great post from a great Diablo mind.

Actually according to gamescon, any upgraded legendaries will be turned into BoA. They are also debating turning the 'targeted legendaries / first time legendary drop from bosses' into BoA as well.
I agree with Ruksak. Unique ladder only items sucks.

Well, if the legendaries will be BoA on drop, i guess there will be no need for ladder only items. I only said they might be necessary as a way to circumvent the constant use of the AH/ RMAH and instead give you a reason to actually hunt demons. However, if the legendaries will not be BoA on drop, things might turn out a bit grim for all of us. No matter how efficient hunting demons becomes in terms of loot, it'll always be behind the AH( none can deny that) and personally i'd feel at a massive disadvantage especially in a ladder if were to not play the AH.
Most of the legendaries WON'T be BoA on drop, but we know once you enchant one, it will become BoA, and hopefully the ones that drop from first time boss kills will be too, so those aren't farmed with new characters over and over again.
They just want to limit the use of the AH, not completely remove it, which is fine in my opinion. It seems what they are doing with the smart drops, and what appears to be a 500% increase in legendary drop chance is a great start. If anything, my guess is they want to make it to where the base legendary that drops is completely trade-able, and any upgraded / better versions that you make that legendary turn BoA.
I want d2 ladder system back, the thought of everyone that plays ladder starting over on the item hunt and levels / paragon just makes it sound fun and that is what i miss from D2.
Legendaries not being BoA on drop is a problem though because within months they'll all be listed on the AH and we'd be in our current situation with nothing to look forward to and just farming paragon mindlessly. Them becoming boa on enchant is a way to take them out of the economy, but that only slows things down. Even if you run at a slower pace in a marathon, you'll still reach the end eventually. All i'm trying to say is that we need to take the best items in the game out of the economy completely, because the economy is not healthy and i don't see how we can make it better.
How does a ladder fix this?
I never played ladder in D2 and I know many others did not either. None of my items ever left the economy. Therefore, since ladder play is not mandatory which will lead to only a subset of the playerbase using it, a ladder is much like enchanting in that it will only "slow things down" and, therefore, it shouldn't be considered a solution (since you've rejected enchanting as a solution for the very same reason).
Your logic as to why enchanting doesn't solve the problem is, ironically, the very same reason that a ladder cannot solve the problem. I mean, unless you're advocating forcing everyone to use the ladder... which would be the single dumbest idea I've ever heard on these forums.
So, as long as enchanting isn't an adequate solution the ladder is an inferior solution.
So you don't like feeling forced into using the AH as the primary means of acquiring the best gear, but you're completely OK with forcing people into playing ladder games as the ONLY means of acquiring the best gear. Hypocrite much?
Seriously, most people I disagree with are not this belligerently ignorant of the fact that they are not the center of the universe. You're so selfish about not wanting to use the AH that you seem to have absolutely no clue that there are just as many people out there who want nothing to do with ladder play as those who don't want anything to do with the AH and that your solution is just trading one "forced to play this way" scenario for another equally-unacceptable "forced to play this way" scenario.
Now that jay wilson is no longer on (I think he was the strongest figure behind no ladder - and even he said it wasnt 100% out of the question) I REALLY want to see this be announced at Blizzcon.
On top of which, the devs have said they dont like the RMAH - but it just can't be removed at this point - A ladder (that dosnt use RMAH) is the perfect solution - Oh how I would love this
A) Ladder only events and gear. I feel left out that i can't eventually play these events and use the gear rewarded in ladders.
Account character slots. We have 10. I have 10 characters. I have to delete characters to play ladder? Thats BS. D2 had unlimited accounts able to be tied to one cd key so we had unlimited characters for playing ladder. Diablo 3 was not set up for D2 ladder style and won't effectively copy it.
C) Bots control ladder economies. Bots controlled the D2 ladder economy because they can aquire gear/runes the quickest. They will be able to aquire gear/gold the quickest. Even if there was no AH, just like in D2, people will buy the gear off 3rd party websites.
D) Bots led the experience rankings in the ladder. With in a week, only bots hold the top spots.
My Suggestion for ladder solution. I think it would be cool to have challenges that involved ladders that went for varied amounts of time. We could opt into these challenges with characters we already have.
Time frames could go from 1hr to 6 months
Obvious challenges could be elite kills , pvp kills, and experience earned.
Blizzard really could go wild with challenges. Most would be inferno only. Here few of the ones I like:
1) Treasure Goblin kill count.
2) Fastest to find a legendary for every gear slot. (targeted legendary drops will make this easier)
3) Furtherst progress in Nephalem trials
4) First or quickest time to loot a targeted legendary.
5) Fastest whole act clears with in a certain time frame. First quest until boss dies. Every quest must be completed.
6) Most kills in an act.
7) Most Elite kills in an Act
8) Most Act Boss kills
9) Most gold collected.
10) Most items picked up.
11) Most legendary items.
12) Most gems collected
13 ) Most Tome Of Secrets collected
14) Most crafting plans.
15) Most Khaza Killed
16) Most Cultists killed
17) Most Lacuni killed
18) Most Herald of Pestilence killed
19) Most Fallen Angels killed
20) Most Act 5 Monster killed
21) Crafting Challenge: Post your best 3 crafted items during challenge. Only items crafted during challenge will post. Items are bid on by other challenge participants. The top 10 Items of each type of gear with highest bids win challenge. The bidders get the items. THe crafters gets 70% of gold. Crafted account bound items included. This would be only way to transfer an account bound item (it will be account bound for the bidder if he wins it). To be in challenge, you must craft at least 10 items for each slot. You can enter crafting challenges for all for difficulties, normal, nightmare, hell, and Inferno. We may need to split up gear slots to be seperate if weapons, rings, or ammy's always win highest bid. If we are only going to focus on one gear slot, participants would need to craft 50 items for slot to be eligible for challenge.
22) Dungeon Race: A Dungeon packed full of monsters. 2-4 Players try to be the first to find their way out of a random dungeon. Times are recorded to see fastest on server during time.
Well that is my latest quick idea segement.
edit: Forget about the rewards. The crafting challenge, reward is obvious. As for others. Paragon points, exclusive dyes, up to 25 banners that give challenge name, time of event, and your placement in ladder challenge. That way anyone that joins a game with you knows you won the Treasure Goblin 24 Hour Kill Challenge on August 24, 2013.

This is like 100000000000000% how I feel. It's how I've felt since they introduced ladder-only items in D2, and it's how I feel to this very day.
