I've always felt that the Town Portals were too easily abused.
(1) - They can be cast virtually anywhere outside of town.
(2) - The collapsing portals could be overcome by using a teammate's.
(3) - They removed the real danger of being out in the wild.
For D3, I hope that Town Portals will be heavily restricted. My friend and I had the idea of banning Town Portals from our games (just the two of us). No more popping back to town to restock on everything. Our idea was that we'd have to make a trek back to the waypoint. If the waypoint was far away, we'd be tempted to just soldier on with less resources.
Another thing that bothered me was Blizzard's failure at making the various towns/acts seem physically far apart. Sure, the radically different styles made them seem far apart, but the only act transition that gave the sense of travel was act 3 to act 4 since there was a portal in Mephisto's area. Otherwise, you always returned to town, talked to someone, and warped to the next area. For D3, I hope you actually have to travel and work to reach a new area.
... No. Diablo is a fast paced game and is not meant to have long distance futile running such as in WoW (by even saying 'WoW' I am sure to get lots of people siding with me). It's a fast-paced RPG and Blizz wants there to be near non-stop action. The TP's give this and should remain.

I'm all for fast-paced action, but I am against cheesy abuse of the current situation. What fear is there if I can just jump into a portal when things get dicey?
At the very least, portals should be blocked in boss areas (or have more instances like Diablo's ability to place a cage upon the portal).

First of all, if things get dicey, people just alt-f4 or esc-quit, and not have time to launch a TP and be able to click on it without misclicking on one of the monsters swarming you. Secondly if you did, it wouldn't help you any, as you wouldn't be able to go down it again without dieing. TP's are just a way to get rid of meaningless down time.

Perhaps I should better define "dicey". Obviously, if your portal becomes grossly surrounded, there is no going back. I'm referring to having 3 health left, no potions, etc. so you just cast a decoy and run to a safe spot and restock.
I'm just throwin' out ideas. Don't get me wrong; I like the TPs (hence my abuse of them). I just hoped for the experience to be shaken up a bit for D3. Maybe monsters could come into town through the portal? LOLz.

Sounds more like a pipe dream :P. I guess TP's are very valuable: free heal, chance to empty inventory, repair items, stock up on consumables, res merc... all for 100 gold (or less depending on act/gheeds). Perhaps there might be some restrictions in D3 but I doubt it. Blizz will surely not hinder this classic Diablo feature for fear of unhappy customers.

TPs slowed the game down and made it not challenging at all. In D1 it was different because you couldn't just sprint away and open TP anytime you wanted. They want to bring back that feel. The feel of being confined in a dark ominous dungeon where danger lurks at every corner and not being able to cast a TP and run to your mommy when you run out of potions. Your mommy being Akara, that is.
During one of the Blizzcon panels, one of the developers said they really wanted to make it feel like when you left town, you were leaving somewhere safe, and you couldn't just go back to being safe any time you want, so they have plans for not allowing you to just TP whenever you feel like, so likely will just be waypoints and no scrolls.

"Beware! Beyond lies mortal danger for the likes of you"
i like being able to go to town on a whim. i loved the fast (nonexistent) travel time between areas (once you had discovered the area) with wps and tps.
my biggest problem with games with constant worlds is the horrendous travel times. it's just not fun and not something that i want to see in d3.
and being a hardcore player, the idea of being trapped out of town (esp with no potions) is also not appealing. doesn't sound like a challenge it seems to be forcing players into a slow and boring pace; diablo is meant to be fast paced
but wait and see wait and see
maybe it will be fine

they'll never see me coming.. life is a sequence of tragedies, inconsistent only by fleeting, elusive moments of pleasure,
serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.

But.... TP's take you out OUT of the action...
With the near elimination of potions, and the addition of health globes, players will probably find themselves going to town less often. And TP's were a sad excuse for escape. TP should still be in the game, but you shouldn't be able to spam it. Maybe it should have a 2 minute cooldown...
guys i 100%agrre wit OP he has a point. Who here can honestly say they didn't abuse TP's and just run into town restock on pots heal and go right back in and eventually kill after like three times of doing this. dude it was the easiest thing to do have it at like F1 and just press F1 rightclick and left click and ur in town
CHEAP WAY OUT. They said D3 was going to be more challenging WELLL THIS IS MROE CHALLENGING putting up a tp and running into town is not challenging a 2 year old could do that. I believ that having to run away instead fo tping is much more fun especially since the Wps are ussually at the begining or middle i rarely ever see one at the end so they shouldnt be that far away unless in fact you are at the end in which case you should die go to town get shit equips then run in kill little by little and work your way up to you body. take a challenge for once.

Could not of said it better my self.
Hm, never thought of that. This would increase value of gold in the game. Imagine running back to town but being unable to heal yourself. XD

Yunno how fucking annoying it would be fighting Duriel?
Blizzard already stated that to compensate for loss of TP/potion abuse, monsters would do slightly less damage and provide more of an even fight.
