So I've come to realize how great a resource Diablo Progress is and thought to myself; how amazing would it be if there were a similar feature in-game! Not only would it be a convenient way to oogle at just how "GLORIOUS!" the adventurers of Sanctuary really are, it would also create a whole new type of endgame for those that are interested in climbing the ranks. Introducing;
The Player Rankings feature is accessible from the Game Select Screen;
First of all this feature is not a ladder mode! Play Rankings would be server specific with an interchangeable option to view both Softcore and Hardcore leagues at any given time. It features numerous rankings split across 4 general categories; Achievements, Attributes, Combat and Adventure.
OPTIONAL~ The hub screen displays a 'Hero of the Week' as chosen by the Developers and/or CM's. This hero is chosen based on a non-specific criteria. The blues may find an interesting build or perhaps they want to give someone a shout-out for doing a good deed for another player. This can inspire other players to be creative and amiable!
Here is an example of an individual ranking that includes sorting options;
NOTE: I know that with some of these Rankings there would be issues, i.e; eDPS/eHP figures are tricky, I know the game tends to shy away from these to avoid confusion among the general player base and rightfully so. The same goes for determining an endorsed 'Heroscore' feature, that would be no easy task. Because of these complications I would even consider omitting the 'Attribute' category altogether (even though the proposition of Statistic rankings are very interesting!).
Another ever present thorn in our sides that would skew some rankings are bots. But the ranking system could alternatively be seen as an easy way to pinpoint bot accounts based on bloated figures that fail to add up.
All in all though I feel that some of the more 'fun' rankings such as the massacre killstreaks and (especially) the time-trial rankings would be an effective way to increase replayability, encourage interesting playstyles & builds and promote friendly competition.
Would love to hear some feedback and other ideas from the Community!
The pictures are awesome, and I understand the wish for a ranking system, but with these criteria the ladder would be just horrible.
Maximum number of elites killed: people will just do it on lower difficulties just for the sake of being high up in the ladder. Maximum gold or enemies killed? Bots will dominate.
How about MP10 monsters kill undying mode ? (it means when you die your count start over)
Now that's a pretty interesting idea. Not something your average dude can do.
But then again, it's not a competition of who's better at the game, but who has more time to throw at the game. Guys like Jaetch have a ton of game knowledge, but he might not be on top of the ladder simply because he can't play 12 hours/day.
If people really want a competition on who's better at the game, I think the best way of doing it is through races.
It is the one thing I have to acknowledge PoE has done right, and that allows for heavy player experimentation and rewards different types of players (maximum lvl, most monsters killed, most areas cleared, most quests/sidequests done, hardcore races, special rules races).
If we want a ranking system in D3, imho that's were it should be headed, not raw numbers.

Except less than 10% of the PoE playerbase participates in races on a regular basis. It's a total waste of time for Blizzard to develop content that's proven to be a niche thing.
Also, race season winners are dominated by people who do lots of races (as best I recall, everyone in the top 20 for race season 1 had participated in at least 70 races). If you don't invest tons of time into it you cannot possibly rank. It's a good idea on paper, but it presents the same time played = success paradigm that the OPs rankings system would present and, to that extent, I think the OP is on to something far more Diablo-ish than "races."
Can't think of a better way to catch bots. Just watch the "Most gold collected" ranking, then bring down the ban hammer
Just make sure they're not WDs with Thing of the Deep! I'm pretty sure every single WD on my friends list has more gold collected than any of my other friends that play other classes (sometimes more than 2, 3, 4 others combined).
Maximum gold or enemies killed? Bots will dominate.

This is what I was thinking! It would be a pretty effective way of putting the spotlight on bots which may in turn rally the community to push for bans. Thanks for the feedback! I like the idea of a Friends tab and the Undying MP10 streaks.
How about items looted in general... Oh, my. Gives people an excuse to pick up everything that drops.
[Player name 1] Lifetime items picked up: 32,538
[Player name 2] Lifetime items picked up: 21,997
etc.
Also, eDPS will be really hard to calculate because it depends on skills and build combinations. My feeling as of now is that Blizzard does not want to feature any eDPS reports or anything of the like because they want build diversity. Having a chart that basically points out which build has the highest eDPS to paper DPS ratio will just tempt players to gear for that particular build.

This.
I really appreciate the effort of OP, but here's what crossed my mind: Many of the rankings are already available (Diabloprogress). Taking something that only a few players use and put it into the game, just right into everyone's face... it's similar like how trading evolved from being "optional" to almost "mandatory" because it was so in-your-face.
There's no ranking that encourages fun builds. On the contrary, if you use fun builds and deviate from the "efficiency" path, most rankings will be out of reach for you. The hero score ranking, DPS, EHP, and many other rankings will not be filled with people who are necessarily "the best players", and definitely not with bots, but with those players who have the biggest credit cards and AH flipping skills.
Therefore, if any such rankings would find their way into the game, make the majority of them such that they encourage diversity or trying out new stuff. However, right now I fail to see how to implement this. No idea. So... this is probably a nice-looking idea, but I'd rather not see this as its effect on the game would not be positive.

God forbid you do something more than one time to be better at it. I forgot all the NBA players got into the league after only one game of basketball. Stop comparing games, if an idea is good, RUN WITH IT. A race could be an exceptionally fun activity in Diablo. More and more you see people trying to play the game better by wasting less time, dying less, hitting more dense areas as opposed to others, and a race is a very intuitive way of combining all of those things and adding transparency to the game - which is a good thing.
No matter what they do at the end of the day, Diablo 3 will not be Path of Exile, so why do you even get yours nuts in a twist when someone takes the time to explore one of the cool features of Path of Exile? I think its BLATANTLY apparent that they took a lot of the cool concepts of Diablo 2 and 3 and added it to their game, but you don't see people bitching about that. People get sidetracked and miss the forest for the trees: if theres some potential enjoyment out of it, maybe use your brain, and try to consider the positive possibilities for a change.....
Actually I never said they shouldn't implement races because they shouldn't copy ideas from PoE. Quite the contrary. I said they shouldn't copy it because PoE has proven it to be a feature that, relatively speaking, quite a small minority of the population truly use.
I would like to see Blizzard, if they wanted to "copy" the idea, do something to make it more popular. One thing, in my opinion, would be to NOT make it a competition where you can win by participating more than everyone else. The average person who participated in races did about 4-6. The top people in Season 1 all did 70+. That's NOT a competition in anything other than who has more free time. I can guarantee more people would participate if they thought that having the time to do a handful of races had a chance to get them some kind of reward. To that extent I think the OPs suggestion fails too (but I still think he did kick-ass work on the proposition).
There are plenty of games out there that Kripp and his "no life" clan can pwn at. Every single game doesn't have to be a competition of who can invest more time. Perhaps that IS one of the things that differentiates PoE and D3. You want big competitions you could play PoE. If you want a game that isn't about ePeen you could play D3. I don't see anything remotely offensive about that.
I'm really sorry that you think that I hate PoE. I don't. It's not quite my style, but I have great respect for the team that developed it. If they stop listening to the very vocal "hardcore" crowd I think they really could make a bang-up game. But so long as Kripp has a direct line of communication with Chris Wilson and the game is based around his ilk, it will be a haven for the hardcore and nothing else. PoE needs to do something to break the stigma that it's only for hardcore players.
One thing I will say is that I believe in competition in markets. As such I do not want to see PoE become a D3 clone and I don't want to see D3 become a PoE clone. I want product differentiation. I want there to be features and systems in one game that aren't in the other. Why? Because it challenges both Blizzard and GGG to make a better product long-term. If both games, essentially, became the same thing... well, then it kinda devolves into who has more money or who has the bigger existing playerbase and the other guy fades into obscurity.
I still think it's a decent way for people to actually be able to compete at something, be rewarded for it (with exclusive stuff or titles).
Yes, most of the players who dedicate a ton of time will dominate, but that doesn't mean people who are new can't research, train a bit and rank better than those (specially if there are different race rankings, as I said - map completionists, highest lvl, how far someone would get).
MP10 races with self-found would be particularly interesting imho.
Every single competition driven game out there (fighting games, RTS, mobas, FPS) puts players in a similar starting position. Nobody has a clear distinct advantage when the game actually starts. And that's the big deal about putting players on a "starting point", as PoE races do.
And yes, people who play a lot will have an advantage, but that's where skill is factored in. I've seen european pro players with very litte pratice time beat Koreans with 10x more time to play and practice in huge tournaments.
I stand by my point. A race system is a much more fair and skill-based competition than a "numbers-based ladder" system will ever be.
Eg Inferno Elite Kills:Time Ratio (which cancels out the time effect) -to a certain extent
Elite Kills to Death Ratio. etc
Thought about that. Unfortunately, puts even more emphasis on "efficiency". Think about public games... "no talk plz, stay efficient or we'll lose ranking points".
Like maka said... the game is about time and almost every measurable unit will be about either time, or efficiency, or both. Or your credit card.
Unless you come up with some artificial rankings like "how many different builds have you tried for at least an hour/at least 1000 elite kills", or some coefficient that reflects how many "non-popular spells" you've used... well, even for someone like me who's really interested in diversity that sounds ridiculous ;-)

I couldn't agree more, personally. It's about the concept, and its a fantastic one. When I play Battlefield or Call of Duty, I dont think to myself, "MAN IT SUCKS THEY BOTH HAVE DEATHMATCH (insert any game mode here)", because deathmatch is a fun mode to play and each game has its own take on the scenario. Path of Exile has its own userbase and playstyle, likewise for Diablo 3, these modes can be interchanged and remain fairly different because of the core components of the differentiated gameplay styles. In my opinion, a race would be much more exciting on Diablo 3 for many reasons.
The fact of the matter is, as it stands, Diablo 3 only has two basic gameplay styles: Hardcore and Softcore. Anything else is user-driven and unsupported officially. I see the race game play mode as an extended version of ladder, which largely is an archaic system, and would benefit from modern improvements. The important factor for me, though, is that there would be multiple ways to ladder (for all intents and purposes I describe ladder (a ranked system, any system, including racing) would atleast have a mode where you're required to have a new character, sequestered from the current economy, that way we can have a cyclic means of removing items from the economy. For example, when you start your new ladder character, or, "toon," they would still have access to all of the features of your current characters, however, like in Diablo 2, they can only transact within the community of ladder characters. Whether thats via trade, or Auction House, (preferably no RMAH). It does a lot for a constant hard-resetting economy which offers stabilization. If you play Hardcore on D3 you'll find that it is much more stable than softcore, for obvious reasons, even to this day. Granted, bots and the like have still found their way into hardcore, but they certainly have not penetrated it to the level of softcore.
I think it would be in the best interest to eventually start a thread on the official forums and see if we can't rally up some muscle from our forums here and get as much support as possible. Yes, it likely won't sway Blizzard into making a decision. But, aggregating a large pool of people that say they wan't some gameplay options, that NEEDS to be seen. I can't stress that enough.
I just wish there was a Ladder in general which kept track of the basic things, Paragon level, elite kills, gold earned etc which reset every few months and a new game option which excludes the AH completely but some sort of implementation such as Diablo 2s custom named games so trading could still happen. Hell I'd even be happy just using the trade chat alone. I like the AH version of the game but you can get like 100M for $3.. That's just too easy and too cheap. I'd play all 3 versions still. Especially when an expansion came out. Hop back on the old AH characters just to mess around, test stuff out find new items etc then go play seriously on the no AH version and Ladder mode. As of a few months ago I quit. Came back, my gear was worthless obviously. Spent $7 fully geared my wizard and barb for MP7 played a few days and it got old since, unless drops are near perfect stats then they are worth very little.
Edit: I don't think any of the new game modes would render the AH mode obsolete because I feel only the gamers who lean towards the hard-core side or want more of a D2 feel to the game would play them leaving the less time dedicated players sticking with the AH since it would be easier and progression would be much faster.
I really do not think this will work well in D3 or in these types of games. It did not work well in D2 and it does not work well in PoE since only a few people take part in it. Most players out there does not have the time or have the urge to prove that they are the best and just want to play a game to have fun and escape the pressure of real life. In D2 the ladders somewhat worked since only some of the gear could be available when playing in the ladder (Unless playing PlugY or with a modified text files in single player mode).
It would be alright if people had a choice to enter it, bbut it should not offer rewards or anything.

Overall sweet ideas man! Keep it up! It's at least something to strive for, for some people. It is very exploit sensitive though.
