Alrighty, for anyone coming to this game late - back in 2008 (or so) there was a pretty big uproar over blizzard's "kiddy/wow-like" approach to the art and environment in Diablo 3.
if you are unfamiliar with this issue please view these links, or the 3 pictures below... or one could easily familiarize themselves with a quick googling of "diablo 3 artistic direction"
This complaint as well as a whole host of others died slowly, with the defense that this was just an early, pre-gloss version of the game.
My question now goes out to those who are now familiar with the look and feel of the beta.
reflecting back on this old complaint, how satisfied are you? Does this argument still hold any water? - Do the graphics stray to far from the 'diablo' look, are they too similar to WOW, too bright, ect.
I am questioning these arguments' validity/legitimacy in the current state of diablo 3... (going off of D3 beta. act1)
PS!
While forum searching, I came across this post by Internet. Would those who have played (or who have been studying the game!), please now address these whiny questions.
I was very dissapointed when I saw Diablo 3 trailer. Although It wasn't becoz of "lack of darkness" initially but now that people mention it I guess I can see it too The photoshoped screenies do look better than blizzards. But there are other problems with this game:
1st. I noticed it's same gameplay as Diablo2. I was a big fun of Diablo 2 but after WoW came out it completeley pwned Diablo2 in all aspects. Essentially what I saw is very much like Titian Qest. Sorry I just can't picture myself playing tiny little isometric monsters with "click - till - you - drop" gameplay. It worked in 1999. But not in 2010 IMO. I mean we have WoW with the whole world where you can kill random players or join up to do huge bosses raid progression etc.! There' just so much more stuff to do that clicking little people just seems sucky after you play it....
2nd. The Graphics are essentially zoomed out WoW. this engine was started in 2002 or so when they used it for WC3. WC3 IMO was mediocre game I didn't buy it. And Now blizzard uses this graphic engine for SC2 and unfortunately D3, which sucks. I was really expecting D3 franchise to be more realistic with armor reflections, but armor looks crappy like in WoW. I mean, I like WoW but graphic of WoW are crappy.
So I guess to some it up it's outdated grafic, outdated gameplay, just a big dissapointment, I was expecting truly next gen type of game that would stand out either in terms of gameplay or graphics but it looks like both are outdated, so this game is going to suck compared to WoW.
TL DR: To those knowledgeable, please answer a few echoing whiny questions from a year long since past. -2008
I do not believe the graphics resemble WOW and are perfect for the Diablo universe. This artistic style adds longevity to the game as these graphics allow the game to age gracefully unlike Diablo 2.
Those fan edited screen shots look really stupid and dull, the colour makes the game more varied and pleasing to the eyes.
I believe from what we have all seen from the beta, the game is looking really really good, i'm sure many will agree that now that we have actually seen some direct in-game footage that this argument of kiddy/wow like approach does not stand and in fact is quite opposite to what we are seeing in the beta. In conclusion, these graphics are very satisfactory and I wouldn't want it any other way. =)
.....I just don't see it. Diablo 3 looks nothing like wow... Wow is colorful, cartoonish, with really bad stretched textures, and low polygon models. Diablo 3's textures are much smoother, even toned, and blend well. The tone of the art suggests it is a living breathing painting, wow looks nothing like a painting imo. It works much better than sprites did in diablo 2, which were just flat pictures that were animated, not to mention real grainy, and hard to make out the details. Even in wow, after you get so far away, models become sprites. With the limited view and isometric gameplay, there will little to no sprites.
And on another note, this game isn't meant to be a graphically ground breaking game. I would never expect it to be. All of blizzards game have had one goal. Efficient programming, and graphics, to allow a wide range of machines to be able to play, to increase player base. sc, sc2, wc, wc2, wc3, d1, d2 and wow all scale real nicely to allow different machines of different capabilities play.
Game perspective (e.g., first person, third person, third-person overhead) is a preference thing, so it doesn't really make sense to argue that one has improved on or is better than another. Diablo is a different flavor of RPG than WoW - the person in the quote was clearly blown away by the MMORPG format of WoW and should probably stick with that instead of expecting it from games that are not MMORPGs. The Diablo series has always been a more linear, story-driven action RPG. As far as the aesthetics of D3, I think the beta looks great.

'>Okay So this guy says that diablo was started in 02? GTFO now. You obviously know nothing of the development of this game. WC3 engine are you fucking kidding me? That has to be the biggest joke I've ever heard SC2 and D3 using the same engine, maybe. WC3 and SC2/D3 using the same engine no way. WC3 is so much more blocky and cartoony than Sc2 or D3 hell WoW is less blocky. If you don't want the click to move play style don't play the game I don't know what to tell you. This is how Diablo has been for its entirety and that's all there is to it.Its also doesn't honestly have outdate graphics. Look at MW3 or Black Ops, Are those really good graphics HELL NO!. Are they the number one shooter in the World Hell YES!. I know you didn't say this but I feel like smacking whoever wrote that quote. They obviously have no knowledge of Diablo, never played 2, and have yet to even read a single thing about Diablo 3 besides all the complaints. Which if you have eyes and can see, it's a little less bright than it used to be considering almost all of Act1 that we've seen has been in dark woods with fog rolling over you constantly or in a dungeon with green/blue lighting that's pretty bright but not in a bad way. It has its own style just like WoW, SC2, MW3, BF3, or Crysis have their own styles of the game. These complaints are pure opinion and don't represent the majority of the fans and should not be taken seriously. /endrant

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
The game looks fine once you play it. Its not extraordinary, but its nothing bad either. A lot of the added filters effect in the screenshot are exactly what a lot of horrible looking game do: Add stupid filters that try and make a game look better but in reality, it doesn't. Its like games that abuses Bloom. Stop ruining your game by making it look supposedly "better" by ruining any artistic sense and putting plasters over it.
D3 is held back by limited polygons and bad textures. It really showed to me, like the graphic engine just isn't anything special. Beyond that, there is definitively a few things that just seem too bright and a bit too colorful, which is where the WoW comments come from. Its unfortunate, but it is what it is.
Those fan edited screen shots look really stupid and dull
That's what I thought as well. Those edited ones are way too dark and just make the game look really silly. To be honest I didn't really play Diablo 2 for the graphics and I doubt I will be any different for Diablo 3. I will be focused mainly on the game play. If the game looks decent then I don't mind what direction they take it.
I like both styles. But Diablo 3 fantasy stuff feels better on how Blizzard confronted it.
The grey and dark and lacking colors are no issue of mine, just keep the blood red, or green..
I don't think the graphics look anything like WoW. I can see how people think it's more "colourful" than Diablo II, but as Blizzard said, they went back and played through DII and there was a lot more colour there than they remembered. I think it's different when you're playing the game, you may not notice this or that because you're too involved in killing everything. But watching a trailer for the game, you look at everything, and people will judge it.
One complaint I heard people say is that Diablo III doesn't look "gritty" enough. I still play Diablo II to this day, so I'm not just remembering the way it looked and comparing my memories to what I've seen in DIII pictures. I think a lot of what they think is "gritty" is just the graphics of DII - it's far more pixelated, for one. I can see how that could change the feeling of the game and how it looks.
And about the game being the same game play as DII, and being a "click everything until it dies" game... Well, to me, that's what Diablo is. I find that fun, and I think it works for that game. I would hate if they changed it up and made the controls like WoW. WoW controls work for WoW, but in WoW you're mostly killing only one or a few things at a time if you're on your own, you're not running into a giant group of things and murdering them. You can do that in Diablo, and that makes the game fun for me.
Personally, I like how Diablo III looks a lot. We haven't even seen a whole lot of the game, so I can just imagine the other environments that will come later. Either way, I don't think Blizzard has to worry about the way the art looks at this point. Fix those bugs up and release the thing already!
