I was just wondering if Blizzard has mentioned anywhere whether you could have an option of having your camera locked or not.
I've been playing Dota, HoN, LoL, Wc3 etc so much that the idea of an unlocked camera sounds.. Interesting?
Although it might be kind of imbalanced to be able to see beyond what you usually could see.. Maybe with a "fog of war" it could be possible and possibly with a limitation of how far you could scroll from your character..
An unlocked camera, like in Guild Wars, would be really nice. The ability to pan around and look at things in a 360 degree view rocks. However, after looking at a lot of the game play it looks like the camera view is mostly from above at a slight angle. So it'll be a fixed camera much like D2.

Sorry i should have revised my post a little bit. I wasn't saying wow was isometric i was just saying Diablo was really similar to wow, for instance the tab system and "World messages".
All the fixed areas' layout of npcs, props, etc have been designed in a manner than looks the nicest with the assumption that the camera is facing one direction. I too would like to keep it that way.
Well, if there's one way to have the camera move so you can look around, that should be the way Starcraft II does it. Hold a certain key, move the camera around, when you let the key, things go back to the way it is.
Guys, this game is a successor to Diablo 2, not any other RPG. Diablo 3 will carry on the tradition of being an isometric RPG franchise. Doing anything else will change the feel of the game completely. The ability to pan the camera has no place in Diablo since your controls are tied to only 1 unit, and so when you pan the camera, you will lose control of that unit.
Secondly, as others have said, if the ability to rotate the camera was introduced, there would be a need to completely redesign levels from the ground up. Wall cut-offs, cliff designs, background designs are all based on one fixed isometric view.
For example: Imagine if you were viewing an ultra-realistic cardboard cut-out of a person. Standing at a distance, in one fixed position, it would seem like the cut-out was a real person, or at least a solid 3 dimensional object. However, once you begin to walk closer and start circling around it, it's obvious that the perceived image is just a 2D cardboard cutout. At first, your brain basically fills in the blanks and "imagines" that the cardboard cutout is 3D. That is, until you begin to gain more viewing angles by walking closer.
It's basically the same for Diablo 3. If you change the camera angles, Blizzard would need to code all the things that were not perceived before, since it was at a fixed camera angle.
So, question: Would you rather the game be complete sooner at a better quality in isometric view? Or would you rather Blizzard waste their energy to code in unnecessary viewing angles? I know which one I would choose.
I know I am not the only person here who gets annoyed by the constant comparisons of Diablo and WoW. I would like to point out that Diablo was a franchise long before World of Warcraft. And please do not argue that WoW is part of the Warcraft RTS franchise, two completely different genres. Of course Diablo and WoW are going to have similarities. They are both fantasy action rpg's. However, Blizzard is not known for making cookie cutter games, and will do everything it can to maintain the differences between the two franchises, if nothing else, to keep them individual. Diablo has never been a first or third person view game. It probably never will be. Isometric view has a very different feel and the gameplay is greatly affected by the view. It is one of the reasons that Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda game. I prefer the classic isometric view. Ocarina of Time and the Zelda games that have followed have all been great, but I personally don't like the gameplay as well. I really believe that if you changed the view, it would completely change the gameplay, and that is something I really don't want to see. There is a reason Diablo 2 is my current favorite game, and I am hoping that Diablo 3 can take its place. If I want a third-person action rpg I will start playing WoW.
Ophion, normally your comments are my favorite to read because you make such good points. In this one though, I have to disagree. The mmo describes the fact that lots of people can play together at once. However, the gameplay is still action rpg. I suppose if we really wanted to describe it accurately, we could call it an MMOARPG, or even better, MMOTPARPG: massively multiplayer online third-person action role playing game. There are other MMO games that are not Action RPGs, but that does not take away the fact that in every way, WoW plays like an Action RPG.
If D3 has non fixed camera angles I will likely not get the game. I never had a good experience with ARPG that had it. I could only stand it for a few minutes. Most of the times the camera angle would change and I find it too aggravating to re-focus on the action. Those games for the most part did not have the monster density as D2 or the D2 mods that I play.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.
I know that this topic is futile as Blizzard has already made their minds about this..
But to clear some confusion in this thread; I never said anything about panning, rotating, zooming or anything like that. I only meant to be able to disable the center-lock the camera has on the character.
The point of this would be for example to see what your allies are doing if maybe you are not close enough to them.
D2 scenario: You have a frenzy barb on your team. With his insane movement speed he rushes ahead of his teammates thinking he can take care of himself. He was mistaken and runs into some ugly monsters. With the unlocked camera you could see ahead that he is in trouble and rush to his aide.
The fog of war would cover everything outside of your own and your allies light radius for balance.
You can Zoom in that is about it. Probably with the scroll wheel. Honestly though isometric view is fine, was fine in D1 and D2 should be perfectly fine in D3. If torchlight is any example of How D3 will play then I love it already.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
I only meant as an option for those who liked that kind of thing (defaulted on locked-on). Personally i dont think it would ruin any Diablo feel or anything like that.

This. And i want it to stay that way.
