open world would be retarded... and trying to do any kind of combination of open world and rooms would just get even more retarded.
the realms are close enough to open world, rooms are ftw but i do think it would be pretty cool if the player cap went to 12...
Closed games, passwords, small groups, and direct connection. There is a sore lack of this in RPGs with MMOs taking over and leaving nothing but singleplayer RPGs behind.

‘I'M NOT LEAVING UNTIL WE ALL HAVE AIDS!’—The importance of calling them ‘mercenaries.’
I've played WoW and although the fact that you can play with thousands of players is appealing for a while, I want Diablo 3 to keep the old fashion style of multiplayer. Although, I don't mind if it went up to 12 players, but I like the intimate and immersing factor of a small group fighting evil :).
in WOW, you can also fight evil with a small group(<=40):)
I like the trade post idea though that is awesome!
So, start the game, click B.net, log in and select your lobby room. The game then loads up the engine and throws everything into ram etc.
Now, whenever you join a game, the load time will be significantly lower, therefore saving alot of time.
As for the environment, I would think it would be some kind of arcane sanctuary type deal. You could really expand alot apon this idea. Eg.
Auction House,
Mail,
Account stash,
Socializing,
Trading,
Showing off your gear!,
Finding games and creating games (eg. <NuZZ>[Town] LFG Mephy HELL)
Lawl, I think it would be awesome... I think it would make multiplayer alot more engaging, plus I love the idea of less loadtime, leaving more time to game. Tbh, this lobby area could also have some branches to an infinite quantity of PVP arenas. Someone should make a thread about this idea, so it gets noticed better.
Open world, no, but I like the ingame lobby idea...
Diablo III has way too many mobs and too intense graphics for open world. Can you imagine 50+ Barbs doing ground stomp?
On another note... I thought the post was originally about Open vs. Closed multiplayer in D2. In which case, I liked being able to play a char single player when on the road but couldn't stand getting on Open at home b/c of the hacks.
If it will be MMO, it means it will have lag, bad graphics etc. so i want classic D2 style.
The detail of the diablo universe, and what was shown in the current videos out it makes me think more and more that its rooms.
The chat channels are the open world, but in the new version of battle.net there could be some changes like seeing what people have equpied, etc. More of that element of mmos in the chat channels.
The game rooms being the instances from those channels.
I'd like to see the ability to click through your inventory in the chat channel to shift click on them and the item name goes into the chat window. So you could be trying to find someone to trade and [Item Name] can be attached and clicked on to see stats, etc. similar to regular in game chat of WoW.

Blizz has already said that with the release of SC2 and D3, Battle.net will be revamped to provide much better match making, be extremely anti-cheating, and probably faster servers.
Battle.net at its core is just a chat/match maker that Blizz has set up, within each game is a Ui to interface in the manner appropriate for the game with the service.
Anyway, point is....D3 is not going to be a persistent world, it can't be, because it will be using Battle.net.
Which is good. Because A. Its Free, B. It lets me play will who I choose, and C. Its free.
Any thing else Blizz was referring to as new features to battle.net would probably include the ability to examine other D2 players more in-depth, like view equipment from the chat channel.
Probably along with PvP match making services as well, as Blizz said they would like to improve on the Diablo pvp element, allowing them to add D3 into competitions like Warcraft & Starcraft.
I prefer the old style d2 room multiplayer. If they could double the size of the rooms that would be nice because that way we wont get massive lag at bosses and you can have nice friendly battles with bosses and some good conversations.
the classic D2 multiplayer - here's why...
1. It makes it more unique, and conveys a sense of loneliness and depression.
2. If it was multi, it would not follow the two other games, also there would be server maintenance required, therefore a monthly fee.
3. There are plenty of MMOs out there to chat with your friends, however in this game, there is really no point. It is entirely PvE, so all multi would do is attract bots to get super rich and spoil the fun in rewarding yourself.
4. This game has a story-line and a campaign to follow, so everything is planned out in a way that lets you get richer and more powerful on a curve. If you had any other players or bots to compete against, it would institute a "grinding" atmosphere, and completely eliminate the enjoyment of the lower levels, and when you reach the high levels, you get tired of the game. You have to enjoy every moment of it alone and at your own pace, or there is no point in playing it.
5. This game is neither linear or open world. It is randomly generated areas that play differently every time. This is why multi wouldn't work. This is also why this game is the only one of it's kind, and also why it is so goddamn awesome.
If the multiplayer was like 1st choice you had, I wouldn't even play it. Since I wouldn't even play it, I wouldn't even buy D3, just download from a torrent.

If your insane, but still sane enough to know it, are you insane or sane?
There are already games that are 15000 (miles or km) big
