Yeah, it's a game called Fate (Mac and PC)... and it gets old fast. It's basically Diablo 2 but one dungeon. Torchlight was made by the same people.

posted a message on DIII in high definition??
Nobody seems to know what they're talking about... HD is being erroneously applied to computer displays. HD is a TELEVISION standard, not a computer graphics standard.

What you're referring to is the resolution of the textures. If the game engine supports multiple display resolutions, which most games and graphics cards now do, and the textures are high enough quality, and your display's native resolution is high enough.... then yes, 1920x1080 or above is possible.

I would also hope you wouldn't choose to play a computer game on a TV... the refresh rates are set to match TV standard framerates (29.97 or 30fps), and are thus much much lower than computer displays, which are usually 60 to 75 Hz. The result is a choppier signal, or even ghosting in some instances with LCD and Plasma displays.

id rather have a laptop... you can get really small ones now that blow this thing out of the fuckin water.

You're off track here... It's not meant to replace a laptop. It's something for people who don't need the power of their MacBook lines; read: casual users who only surf, listen to music, and do docs and spreadsheets. Clearly it's a streamlined device, OS and all.

If your beef is power, then I think the iPad is still a contender in the gaming world, if game developers will take advantage of this market. Besides, one of the main aspects they demo'd at the keynote was games. And they didn't even show any that would use the full power of the device. I'd be willing to wager that on their A4 chip (1Ghz), it could run some decent games. I mean WC3 only requires 400mhz. Torchlight runs on 800mhz. There's potential, maybe not for D3, but at least for game developers in general, considering it's not a power-gaming device.

Certainly by the release of D3, iPad will have a bigger brother capable of the requirements. Maybe it'll be worth keeping in mind at least.

QuickTime is the biggest failure of a video player, ever -.-

Except that Quicktime supports a broader range of codecs natively than WMP, handles higher bit-rates much smoother than WMP, and is the main integrated component of almost all professional creative video/audio apps... sure.

Now, if you guys will get back to the main point...

Check out Dungeon Hunter. If this can make its way to an iPhone, I'm pretty sure D3 can be feasible on an iPad, although I doubt Blizzard would spend the resources. Plus there would have to be an alternate solution to Battle.net for it, I'd guess.

Funny how this turned into an Apple bashing thread. Back to the OP...

That was one of my first thoughts before it was announced. But all that kind of went out the door when they announced it would run off an OS similar to iPhone OS. If it were OSX, then Diablo could be run no question, given the proper graphics processing (especially since Bliz claims they are developing the game to cater to lower end users.)

I don't know that Blizzard would spend the resources to develop an iPad version, although several games have been ported to iPhone before (Sims, Duke Nukem, etc.)

As far as controls go, I think it's totally feasible without a mouse. Not to mention there are several of 3D iPhone games in the vein of Diablo (Dungeon Hunter is a great example.. and that's just on the iPhone) that work quite well with touch controls. It would only be better with a larger device...

But still I don't see it happening.

There's a couple ways I see how this could go.

    1) No prereqs (and thus wasted points) - skills become active at certain levels so you can skip skills if you want. Looks like tree, just no progression if you don't want. Similar to Hellgate:London, I'd suppose.

    2) All skills become available at certain levels or achievements. No tree or progression whatsoever, just a list of skills. However, your skill points go to specialize in certain skills.

    3) Some other way?

posted a message on Mac Users
Originally, they shipped separate versions for Mac and Windows. Newer versions support both on same disc (I can't install it on Mac with my original discs, but can with new ones).

Also not sure if you've upgraded to 10.6 (snow leopard) but those no longer support PowerPC, so I'm wondering whether this new version will support that? I thought Rosetta took care of that, but maybe not. Check your install disc for which version it supports.

And regards to the original post... I'm sure the game will run very smoothly. Question though, did you upgrade to your Radeon? I thought all Macs (at least the MacBooks and the Mac Pros) came standard with nVidia?

posted a message on Widescreen Diablo
Ent1ty, to clear things up (I know this has nothing to do with Diablo 3, but while we're on the subject), the HD standard is a TV standard. Computer displays and graphics cards are largely independent of those standards, although they are capable of displaying the same resolutions. The use of 'p' only denotes the type of frame interpolation, which does not apply to computer graphics. Just a note.

The good thing is that the way games are made now, the textures and models are designed in higher resolution than needed and can be scaled accordingly. In the case of Diablo 2, the textures were designed for those resolutions, so to display them otherwise would not look good.

But for Diablo 3, I think we can expect flexibility. Of course I don't have a quote to confirm that, but that's pretty much the case with any game you buy now.

posted a message on Widescreen Diablo
Bottom line: Diablo 3 already supports widescreen resolutions. The 20 minute gameplay video was widescreen. As SFJake pointed out, most games that are released now are formatted for widescreen displays, since 4x3 consumer monitors are virtually no longer in production.

Let's get some things straight though: If you've got a widescreen monitor, and the picture looks stretched, that's because it IS stretched - you're displaying a 4x3 signal on a 16x9 or other aspect ratio display. Diablo 2 was meant for only one aspect ratio, and is inevitably stretched on a widescreen monitor, regardless of your display's native resolution. And if a game you play does support a higher resolution and widescreen format, and it looks stretched, you need to check your system display settings. My roommates have widescreen displays but use a 4x3 aspect - it drives me nuts!!!

(Also just of note to previous posters, be careful when using 'p' as a suffix on a resolution - that stands for 'progressive' as opposed to 'interlaced' and applies in the world of the video, not in computer displays.)

I promise I'm not an Apple fanboy, but....

Buy a mac. You don't have to worry about getting the right hardware configurations. And the nVidia's that come stock are top notch and perfect for gaming.

And you can run bootcamp for your Windows-only games. Bang for your buck.

Besides, Blizzard also caters to Mac users, and I applaud them for this smart business model.

The Heaven and Hell themes are a subplot of the Diablo universe. The story is about the continuation of Sanctuary, not Heaven or Hell, and so Humanity is the main character.

This is not true. Conflict is central to every story. Heaven and Hell is where that conflict arises. If it's just about Sanctuary continuing, the game might as well be about farming the land and making endsmeat. Diablo Tycoon.

Central to the story will be the conflict of Heaven and Hell with Sanctuary caught in the middle. In other words, if it weren't for either waging war for control of us, we wouldn't have a story. There are deeply spiritual (and very apparent) connotations to everything in this game. So Blizzard will inevitably drive part of the plot line through Hell, Heaven, or maybe both.

Going back into the Burning Hells would be very run-of-the-mill - even for Diablo. It would only be appropriate that the Hells come to us now. That's what LOD setup to begin with: hell spilling forth into our world (and eventually, I would wager, heaven). So I think it's in Blizzard's best option to have an act in a very corrupted Heaven. Perhaps my $0.02, but I'm with the OP... there's not much to be said about recreating the same content. Recreating the gameplay style... sure... but content? It'd better be worth the wait (and money).

    mmm... plains... randomized plains.

    As far as the story line - I do agree it's a bit run-of-the-mill. I can't say I mind though - I mean, it's mind-numbing action to begin with.

I would personally like to see Skovos islands (Mediterranean/Greek) or the Asian setting. Also can't wait to see whether Hell takes over Heaven - a hellish heaven... yummy and creative.

Definitely creepy. A lot of folks' definition of creepy is decaying woodlands and old gothic-style catacombs. But a savage, hopeless wasteland... that's full of despair.
