Both a physical and magical ranged class will most likely have representation. Also just because no one else said it yet and just because I really don't want to say paladin, since I don't think barbs would be the "shield" user or whatever I am just going to say...creepy purple penguin :cute:.
Many people in this thread and the others like it I have read are getting a bit too hung up on mechanics, so I would like to offer and alternative aproach. I'm going to assume 5 classes at the moment (since that is a certain minimum) if more are added later then thats great, but lets go with what we know.
My ideas relate not to how the classes fit in terms of combat role so much as lore. Everyone seems certain that the witch doctor has replaced the necromancer, and as much as I hate to admit it that seems possible. However, its important to realize the significant role that necromancers play in the lore and storyline of sanctuary. I think it may be prudent to not count them out so quickly. Take the case of the barbarian as an example. They have the obviouse role of pure melee/tank. However, there is no real reason to have brought this character over simply to fill this role when there are plenty of other options. There is good reason, however, to bring them due to their close ties to the story and lore of Mt. Arreat and what happens at the end of D2:LoD with the worldstone. Another important thing to note for those of you considering the class roles is that there isn't really anything about the witch doctor that is so closely related to the necromancer. In fact, his abilities are much more in line with a darker form of the druid than a necromancer. He has a slower, aoe-type casting style, and summons wolf-like minions. The only thing that I can see to indicate necromancer is the wall of zombies, but that doesn't really mean much in terms of role, and it certainly doesn't replace the necromancer's role in the lore. Even if they do leave the necromancer out, it is quite likely he will return in the expansion.
Beyond this issue, a good point was raised about being able to choose male or female for each class and how this doesn't fit with the Amazon. Its possible Blizzard will find some convenient way around this or simply have them be an exception. I feel that it is more likely they will have a more general rogue that borrows a bit from the amazon and assassin. This is based partly in that I'm sure there will be some class of this style, but also because neither of these classes is planted too deeply in the lore or storyline and they would be more easily removed.
It is also pretty certain that some type of pure, direct, mage-type class will be there.
That leaves us with the issue of the paladin. In this case, especially, though also in general the original poster's evaluation of the classes from d2 is based only on their later states after 1.10. This leaves out a lot about what they once were, and I think that can be misleading. The paladin's place in the lore is somewhere around the level of the sorceress imo. They are prominent, but not pivotal. Unlike the sorc,
though, they do not have as sound of a combat role, and are therefore less likely to be a top choice. Though the role of a knight (especially the role of a holy warrior) isn't yet spoken for. This is of special interest due to the emphasis that they are placing on "skills over potions." With this in mind it is reasonable to believe they would have at least one class that has considerable healing abilities (especially when joined with the focus on multi-player co-op).
Now that I have theorized a bit I'll take my shot at the class lineup:
Barbarian
Witch Doctor
Rogue
Mage
Necromancer ~(if more than 5)~
Paladin
*at this point who knows maybe another variant of something old or something entirely new :-)
It is important to remember that this is all pure speculation. I'm quite excited about everything no matter what the end result turns out to be.
P.S. as a side note to those talking about this "angle/demon" class: I believe Majpain kinda got it right that playing anything non-human doesn't fit the game. If you don't believe me, I suggest you read the sin war books so you can see that the entire premise of Sanctuary is that humans are to triumph. Wouldn't make much sense, then, if the player triumphed as some angel or demon instead would it?
A pure caster class of some type will obviously join the frey. Magician/Wizard whatever you want to label it as. It's painfully obvious a ranged class is needed and will be added/ Hopefully a Ranger (Archer with animal summon capabilities perhaps?). And who really thinks they will take out paladin? Not I.
Well the whole "will they leave so-and-so out" is pretty contingent on how many classes they end up having. If they stick with 5 they obviously have to leave something out, and they did say that they don't want to just copy them all over. So unless they do up the number, some of our favorites are getting replaced. Either way, I think we'll all like what we get.
I agree that paladin and sorc should make a return. The third class, I'm a little undecided. My idea is either a rogue, like you mentioned, or letting my imagination go wild and having a undead class. Something that is re-animated and is a pure tank. Something to give a barb a run for it's money, lol.;)

Just from a lore point of view, isn't the Necromancer an important class to have in there? Rathma was one, they were trained by Trag'oul. And since Rath and Trag watched over and saved sanctuary (Sin Wars), wouldn't it make sense to put Necro in?

Pretty sure that sorcerer(ess) is a given, and than from there I think it's all custom class love. I'd hate to see all the classes from D2 being brought to D3. It'd be boring IMO. Maybe they're going to say the necros are in hiding, I was reading that guys journal, and it appears to me that there's a lot more anti necro people. I'll have to find the quote where he says one guy blames the necro's for the demons and whatnot.
Look at the loot drops in the gameplay video..... Why would there be shield drops if there wasnt a paladin. There are a few bows that drop too, that also would mean there is a ranged class planned.
The FAQ may say 5 chars, but in at least 2 different interviews/statements blizz have said 7, and "as many as we can". There will be 6 or 7 obviously. My bet is 6, expanded to 8 later on.
-barb. In the video he had charge, which probably means the (pure) pally is out.
-witch doctor. I don't know why people see this as a necro replacement. Look at it, it is a pure druid with a different name and clearer focus. His summons were like summon wolf. He has fire. Poison/disease. These are all _straight_ from the druid. He will probably shapeshift.
-necro. There are too many crazy skill and story possibilities for the necro not to be in, and the character class has too much of a back story and involvement not to be iin the game. What,no golems or bone magic skills in D3? Please. He will be there,100%. The necro might even get auras. Imagine that, a necro with shadowy, evil auras, instead of curses. Cursers fit the witch-doctor better, and auras fits the necro perfectly. Whats the first thing you think of when you see an evil necro in any fantasy game?....This guy has an evil aura of power about him....
-pure caster. We all know there will be an arch-mage type. The question is, what types of magic are there in d3? We know there are fire, light and cold. Blizzard will surely add more.
-bows n stuff. We all know there will be a ranger of some sort. I agree with the posters that say the assassin will or should be merged with a ranger, it makes sense and leaves a slot open for a completely new class.
-dark magic. A pure caster, but not elementalist? Uses demonic magic and necro style pure magic? I think there is a strong chance of this, the whole elementalist thing is getting a bit boring, but still needs to be there for the purists. Think death magic from D&D,a pure caster along those lines would fit pretty nicely into the gothic Diablo world. Even if he has to steal some thunder from the necro, there is plenty of room to expand the necros skill set.
I don't think there will be a pally. There may be a crusader type which heals and tanks...but i doubt it. the pally skills that are worth anything easily transfer and fit in with the barb and the necro. I don't think Blizzard will go down the "jack of all trades" path again, which is why the druid, pally and assy will go. More focused classes with more skills to choose from is the way
Barbar - looks great
Witchdoctor - class looks great, but necros are much cooler, I loved the pale and thin guy! hehe
-------------------
Mage/sorceror - a must have with fire/lightning and frost!
Paladin - a must have
Amazon/Ranger - A must have with bows/javelins
--------------------
Assassin - If more than 5 classes I think its a must have
Necromancer - bleh! replaced by the witchdoctor! : (
Druid - werewolf was cool, elemental druid was just annoying, bear was laughable!
-Barbarian and Witch Doctor of course...
-Probably a solid elemental spell caster, similar to the Sorceress
-Some kind of Knight that possess magic powers
-A ranged class... maybe with trap skills... and pets
Hopefully, blizzard will release some crazy unexpected classes. A "tank"... a stealth character that can slip through enemies... a pure summoner.... whos knows.. lol.
Instead of a Paladin, I am thinking maybe they can revamp it into something different... such as a Priest/Priestress (or Crusader, whatever you name it)
If same old skill trees return (3 type of skils set), One set can be a holy tree where the priest/ress can ulitilze their magical power from heaven to damage foes and heal allies. The other set can be an "Enchantment" tree where special enchanted weapons (melee/range) and armor can be summoned to aid the hero/ine in battle, with the ultimate final skill being a transforming skill that turns the user into an Angel? 3rd set... i don't know, aura like the pally combined with rallying human troops through charisma and summoning heaven's servant in expense of personal combat capability?
This would serve the pally's purpose of a hybird class.
As for other classes, like many have said... a ranger type and a caster type are pretty obvious choice.
