Gold is used for Mana Pots and resurecting ur merc! but otherwise its pointless I think u should be able to buy unique items with it from vendors or something of that sort!

World of Warcraft - Finnegin- Level 80 Enhancement Shaman
-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
I think first D3 needs to decide if their "economic" system is gonna be real, or if it can be a little fake... What i mean is- if we're fighting for the last of humanity, do I really need to pay for some goofball to repair my armor? I dont think so. So if its gonna be fake, then they can make the economic system better.
Anyway, gold should have a way bigger affect in the game. What I think D3 should aim for, is that every item have a gold value. The value is determined, of course, by us players. To do this, they would need to reduce not only the amount of gold dropped, but the number of items too.
Its hard to really say what they should do because D2 was different than most other RPG's.
I think some monsers shouldnt be able to drop gold like swarms and blood hawks. gold should be hard to find but worth a lot, like monsters only drop 1-300 gold, and to give you perspective healing potion=$2.
Some games have really good values of gold and items. I dont think anyone on here plays Maplestory, but its money system is good. Everything is worth a certain amount of mesos.
But its very different from Diablo2 becuase monsters dont drop as many items in Maplestory, but in D2 stuff drops constantly (mostly crap, but still). In D2 you can sell shitty stuff for 35k and you find that stuff a lot, but in MS the only way to get money is to sell good items to players, or to kill lots of monster, as every monster only drops a certain range of mesos.
So D3 would have a lot of innovations if they do decide to make gold worth anything.
I personally do not agree with the fact that gold should be a major currency for the world of Diablo 3. Many online games have that. Diablo(1 -2 & expansions) are both unique and original, the major currency is based on items ( High Runes & Runewords ). If Diablo 3 were to be based on gold, then it would be very out of place, from the other series.
It wouldn't be out of place, it would be a step to further develop the diablo universe. The whole world is obviously not portrayed in Diablo 1 & 2, and there are many aspects that have yet to be covered. Gold is one of those areas, and giving it a bigger and grander purpose is only for the better. Most people in our world no longer trade items for items, they trade items for currency, and as such the Diablo world should be too.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

i think that gold should serve the main purpose of being used to upgrade your equipment like a certain amout of gold could get you an extra stata on a wep or maybe the game could charge for a larger stash so finnaly you onli need 1 mule

It should be and i believe the reason it was not in D2 because d2 was a very small game not very big platform level, items and all wise you couldnt cook and make anything so if they have like crafting i believe it will be because then jobs will be more defined but i am almos positive they will have it like this Bronze, silver, gold, platinum or something like that
Hi, I'm an Argentinian user.... I think about that idea, and finally, whats going on??? are you mad?? That will ... disturb?? (desvirtuar in Spanish) the prices in the diferents servers of D3, remember that.

With all due respect, money should be worth something but not sojs or high runes, come on.. money should have a better purpose than gambling and repairs but it should stay moderate. buying exp is a nice thought but it might make the game too easy, however countering it with finding much lesser gold than we used to in d2 might balance the equasion, and however destroy the economy of the traders, or even rise it up to a new level.. there are still so many more possibilities but dont let the gold go up to your heads

Let's not forget Runescape. The game itself isn't that great due to the fact that free members can finnish all the quests in a week and then after that it's just leveling up in bad graphics land but the ecconomy of the game is solid. People actualy wanted gold, infact they needed it to survive. Plus thieving in that game had some real implacations too. Basicly, Runescape is just a low quality game with good ideas for D3. Plus it has an arena where you actualy bet on the outcome of a duel with people before you fight them.
hey thats pretty cool, i didnt know that. What did you mean by needing it to survive? Anyways that gave me an idea for diablo3 (although i doubt it will happen). some gold gets taken out of your stash everytime you play as upkeep. that gold makes your armor/helm etc. look better. The idea is that as you make money you give your stuff to a NPC and they make your armor better looking for some gold. They could make it expensive so that they know that only the best monster slayers get to look so good. lol just an idea.

NO
That will 'mess up' the prices in the different servers.
1. Diablo 3 is a whole new game and
2. We don't know how the economic system will be structured.
