After playing WoW for few years in hardcore progression guild I have seen quite a few of WTF moments when you wipe to things that are completely outside of your control.
Here a few examples.
1. Lag spikes. You lag and when you catch up to the server you are already dead.
2. System crashes. Same as above but worse.
3. Weird bugs. Boss gives out double damage or a mechanic that allows you to kill said boss bugs out somehow causing you to die. etc.
4. Server crashes.
5. And more.
In WoW Blizzard's policy was simple. Try again.
In Diablo's Hardcore mode it is not that simple because we are talking about loosing much more then 20 minutes (at the most) of invested time. I assume Blizz can go two different ways on it.
Be lenient to players that have died to weird reason in which case the hardcore mode will loose its status.
Be strict in which case it might be border line insane to play hardcore for months and die to something I mentioned above.
In either case there will be a lot of people, on both sides, crying and moaning about something that has happened in hardcore. The line Blizzard is trying to walk might be too thin to execute properly. In another words, I feel that Hardcore mode might suck due to one of the reasons listed above.
it's motherfuckin hardcore. If you can't handle something like this happening, then you're not hardcore. Not trying to flame, but what you want sounds like softcore. the whole point of hardcore is the chance to lose your toon, in many different ways.
Ya its Hc any unforeseen accidents is just a risk you take when you sign up for Hc. I have always been a strict Hc only follower and I have lost countless hours/days of characters but you grin and bear it and make a new char but ya it sucks when something like lag kills you but if you jump in a game and you are having a laggy kind of day just dont play the ones you are not willing to lose.
Well, one way Blizzard could address this is for the server to register some sort of error code when the game/your PC crashes unexpectedly. Lag spikes are not their fault (unless they are - server side issues, which again, they can monitor and have error codes generated).
It's simple, keep a list of HC players currently on the server, the moment the server crashes, that information will be on hand. When back online, tag all those chars with the error code, players can then send that off to blizzard, who can investigate, and res.
I agree with OP. Losing weeks worth of playtime to something that is not your fault sucks. I mean if the brakes on your new car suddenly fail, and you total it, you are not gonna say "meh, I took the risk of going fast, the manufacturers aren't to blame."

Again, this is not hardcore, and actually gives everyone playing HC an easy way out. Ever heard of a lag switch? All I'd have to do is flip that badboy on anytime I'm close to death. As far as an actual server crash, if it crashes then you aren't going to die, because there will be no monsters to kill you =P

What about game bugs. Things that aren't meant to happen, but because of some problem with the code, ie: the product you paid for, you lose your HC character.
I will concede that I never have, and don't think I ever will, play hard core. I just don't have the time I used to to pour into a toon, only to permanently lose him. Maybe this is why I feel the way I do about the topic. I appologise for stepping on the toes of actual hard core players

Hardcore is hardcore! its the ultimate way of playing Diablo 2 and now soon Diablo 3
BUT, its NOT for everyone, if you have a problem parting whit your items dieing on a high level will srsly kill your mood for the day (or week!)
but its INTENSE, consider playing WoW on HARDCORE, if you die ONCE. your gone. wont work but the game would have been so f**king tense its insane
i plan on playing Softcore on my normal chars and having a few Hardcore for when i feel to play the game hardcore. the softcore mode is more of a *lean back and play an awsome game* while hardcore is more of *OMG NOT AN LIGHTNING ENCHANTED AGAIN GAAAHHH....."
Also, @Snaks42, as for your lag switch, I did mention that lag is not Blizzards fault, and should not be a reason for resurection. I am speaking under correction, but can you not tell with a simple ping from which end the lag originates?

It's hardcore, if you have any complaints about the rules you're not hardcore enough and there's softcore mode for you. To lessen the danger defeats the purpose of the entire mode. Enough said.
I can understand that if you loose a HC character due to problems on Blizz's side, you'll be fucking angry. BUT they don't force you to play HC and I'm sure there will be in the fine print of the T&C that they take no responsibility for your loss of character, no matter the circumstance. And you're suppose to know the risk of playing HC.
I personally won't play HC, I never did in D2. I maybe along the road, but surely not in the first 1 or 2 years. I can almost guarantee you that Blizz have some sort of plan regarding this. And I personally wouldn't recommend to start with a HC character from day one, since they might still be kind of "testing" HC or something and the fact that it will be the first time more than a gazillion people will play D3 simultaneously...anything can go wrong, even after testing server stability for 6 months.
YES!, I totally agree with you, slightly sickly looking deckard cain (at least to my eyes ansl ). These HC elite say they used to be fine with lag when using dialups etc, then why not play D3 with Dialup, since it makes the game so intense? Answer, because it sucks.
I know Blizzard will not change the system, and they shouldn't. But why cant we discuss ways in which these sucky problems could be averted?

First, Blizzard cannot make something to give you back your HC character, otherwise it becomes a precedent and abuses will be made. I agree things that are out of your control are frustrating, but you will have to live with it. You can still try to avoid it as best as you can, if you have lags or feel your connection is unstable don't play it that's the best you can do.
Second, I cannot comprehend people that want to go hardcore but are afraid to lose their characters. It's like wanting to go snowboarding and being afraid of falling.
Understand this, for this post and others that start to pop on this forum. YOU WILL LOSE CHARARCTERS (yes with a S) IN HARDCORE.
Until the game is perfectly stable, that a lot of theory has been developped and you know the game 100%, YOU WILL LOSE YOUR CHARACTER.
Repeat after me, I WILL LOSE MY CHARACTER.
You cannot go into hardcore and be afraid to lose a character. Believe me, once you start accepting that at one point you will probably lose it and have to start over it will be better. If you cannot accept that, there is no point in playing hardcore, and no shame not doing it, we do not all have the patience or the time to start over. Ask yourself if you are willing to start over if you lose your character say at level 45.
I'm not saying it is cool, falling in snowboard isnt cool. But it is a part of the process, of the rules.
dum dee dum dum dum killing things oh yah!! Lag ugh WTF &(&*(&^()%^&%)&_(&%%)&_)&(&&^^%&^*()$&)&)*(.
*Couple of hours later*
Hmm guess I'll make a new char cause its a VIDEO GAME.... yup play for fun, who woulda thunk it. What happens if your playing and suddenly a tree takes out your power and you die, do you blame blizzard? God? Your misfortune? Shit happens deal move on, its just a game....

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
Hardcore has been around for 12 years in d2..and it has been fine.
Yeah, but Diablo 2 had a single player option that eliminated any worry about shitty internet connections.
I have the best internet connection available in my area. However, recently it has been sporadically disconnecting for 5-10 minutes. It will be fine for a week and then all of a sudden shit itself and disconnect. It comes back fine after the 5-10 minute period.
As a result of this, I'm greatly having to reconsider the option of playing hardcore. Its a bummer but I'll survive!
It is just unfortunate for me that there are so many lamers who would sit with their hand next to the internet cable ready to pull it out encase of a possible death if Blizzard where to implement some kind of anti-disconnect death feature.

What do you guys think?
On top of this, bosses in Diablo are nothing like Wow, though they may be more complex in diablo 3.. they really dont have things like that.

dont think so, the game i believe is still kinda hard as it should be. so hardcore is still gonna be awsome

And this is essentially my concern. If they do allow such things to happen then Hardcore will not really be Hardcore.
I just hope that they have a system in place to prevent wired deaths.
