i just came up with the stupidest, and most gimiky way to "balance" PvP ever. its a total gimp way of doing it and skill would matter more then gear. so this is my gimiky idea.
normalize all stats on gear to a set value in pvp matches, so that its only the affix that counts and not the number value of it.
all vit, str, dex, int will be a flat 100 ( dual affix will have 50 each)
crit will be say 3% on all gear that has crit.
all resist will be 40 single resist 30.
LoH will be 100 per affix
so on and so forth accounting for all affixes giving them a set number. this way you will hunt for the affixes that works for your skill setup.
it will be kinda like PvP gear but with a twist.
damage wont be to high and armro+resistances wont be to high, everyone can compete.
there is OFC a lot of drawbacks with the system but i think PvP as a whole could be much more enjoyable.

You do realize in d2 there was a 83% dmg penalty in pvp, right? That wasn't counting the damage reduction from DR% or resists. It's also much more elegant solution than yours. Since some build rely on specific stats for resources or damage.
Then again I'm sure you don't because hardly any of this forum remembers that.
90% Gear nerf in "ranked" PVP should solve this issue, at least IMHO.
well, just nerfing gear, would make tanks, worthless, (they will mitigate maybe 20% more damage then a glass cannon) so if they nerf all gear by 90% everyone will be glass cannons and oneshoting well still be the thing to aim for.

not tanks, but persons stacking alot of survivability stats, to mitigate a lot of damage. maybe tank is not the best word for it but its the one commonly used.

Why are you discussing the system and trying to find solutions when you have no clue about what system will be like ?
When did we start commenting something that we didn't even experience or see yet ?
"Worried PvP will be one shooting"- Do you seriously think that Blizzard is retarded or something ?
I suggest you to wait for the release of PvP patch before you actually try to come up with a solution or criticize it without even having a basic clue about what it will be like.
As somebody already said human players hadan aditional damage reduction before any gear was taken into account in diablo 2. We already know blizzard had something worked into pvp called pvp balance buff. Its the simplest solution: Flat damage reduction taken from other player for everyone. Say everyone takes 80% less damage from players, gear stats doesent lose any value and theres no one shot. Easy fix. Even now with resist, armor and avoidance level players can reach there is no "one shot", so it probably wont be as high as flat 80%, it was just an exemple.
At the end of the day, this is not world of warcraft. You wont be beating on a monk for 15 minute to kill him. Considering its classic Team deathmatch, death will be pretty quick.

I dont see how it would be a disadvantage to him, everyone gets the 95% nerf.
I had the chance to play Diablo 3 PvP at Blizzcon the last two years. Everyone was given preset mediocre gear, and there was still a large amount of one shotting going around. Then, if it wasn't a one shot, it was an insta kill. You have to remember there will potentially be FOUR players wailing on you...not just one.
Long story short, you die frequently and quickly, yet it still managed to be super fun. The line to play PvP was always like 10 times longer than the line to play the PvE demo. Hopefully that gives us some indication as to how popular PvP will be when it finally comes out.
I'll for sure be playing.

I actually think tank characters will do very well in PvP against glass canons. Think of a barb with 75% armor reduction, 75% resistance reduction, 30% base reduction and probably another 10%-15% reduction from items. They actually end up taking about 3-5% of damage. Now factor in that they can be blocking upto 50% and dodge 10%.
Let's not forget leap for 4 seconds and ignore pain for 7.
Ancient spear was pretty much designed for PvP as well.
since when is pvp inferno mode? I surely hope melee chars dont get 30% reduction. The reduction was only needed cause you would get hit by several mobs in order to do damage. I think the reduction will be removed for melee chars, or at least lowered
I can see them not balancing like in WoW, but I can't see them not spending ANY time balancing. No one would PvP if it was just about standing on one side of the arena waiting for a DH Hungering Arrow to hit you.
According to http://www.diabloprogress.com currently the highest unbuffed DPS is 200k, the highest unbuffed EHP is 5M. Even though those values are missing some important stats, this is pretty far away from one-shoting.
Maybe I am crazy and only remember this...because I am crazy...but didn't they announce arena coefficients would be different than PvE? That seemed to stick out in my mind because I couldn't believe WoW didn't do that yearrrrs ago.

Take player health, armor, resists, damage reduction from things like String of Ears, etc. and then see.
