The only aspects about RW's I didn't care for was that high runes just flat-out didn't drop often enough, causing the player to have to rely on fake-ass dupes, and it sucked having to find room for, as well as move around, all those damn runes.
Heh, I think they dropped at exactly the intended rate, ie none ever. They were the best items in the game generally speaking, you weren't SUPPOSED to be able to get one, it was supposed to be earth-shatteringly awesome when you saw a single high rune drop. That's why dupes ruined the game really, everyone had access to gear they shouldn't have so those "once in a lifetime" good gear just became the BiS everyone had. Which completely devalued all other kinds of gear to the point it was worthless.
Yep, dupes made the availability of RW items something they were never intended. Kinda makes you wonder how D2 would've been if duping wasn't a thing? Would it have been better....or worse?
Aside from rune-words, HR's also played a roll in many other items. It was common place to use Ber, Lo, Ist (and others) for their item affects. Most notably, the Zod rune. How different would things have been if it wasn't so damn easy to get a Zod rune for those uber-sweet etheral items such as eth HoZ, Eth Alma-Negra, EDC etc...??
I wish the Diablo community of players would come together and DEMAND rune-words now that the realms are supposedly protected from dupes.
Legendary items are not designed to necessarily be the best items in the game. They’re just one additional type of item as you level up, and they are not meant to be the primary items you’re chasing at the end-game. They can -- and should -- be exciting to find, but they’re not supposed to serve as the single driving force of the item hunt.
This is the dumbest thing I have heard by Blizz in... well, not very long, but it's unacceptable. Having UNIQUE items has always been what Diablo was about. I don't want to be geared to the teeth and have it be blues and yellows...
-.-
And yes, runewords WERE uniques in my opinion. I didn't rule them out at all. Only that BLUES and YELLOWS sucked unless you were making, maybe a BO barb that used 2 spears with +skills to BO on them. Obviously those were better.
Erm. Diablo legendaries where nothing special for the most part. Only exception being the Windforce for the Rogue. And argueably the Stormshield for the Warrior. Other then that Blues where best.
In D2 you essentially had 1 set of gear that was best for your class/build, period. 90% of people of every class but a sorc wanted an Enigma. Go before runewords and it was Uniques instead. Go before LoD and Uniques weren't even that great.
Thankfully in D3 there are many different variations that are useful, no one max level/geared char is going to have the same equipment, thank fking god. Now there will be atleast SOME variation in equipment between high end chars instead of trying to get that "perfect, godly BoTDZerker" you'll actually have to think for yourself about whats an actual upgrade for you.
Regardless of what's been said, I think it's obvious that we'd prefer legionaries to be superior to the other type of magical and rare items. As much as everything is random, it only makes sense to me.

Your using the word "We" instead of the word "I". Thats your opinion. Many people probably do not share it. Okay, we'll skip using the idea of Diablo for this and goto a common WoW occurence. There was no variation in gear at top tier between characters. Everyone built, played, and looked exactly the same. Randomizing the stats and toning down legendaries keeps that from occuring in D3.

Here's the thing though... Diablo 3 is what it is. People seem like they're acting like D3 is an expansion for Diablo 2 and should pick up exactly where D2 left off. It's a different game. Maybe some of aspects of it aren't appealing to the diehard D2 player right now, but people aren't even giving it a chance to develop into something. If only people were to give constructive criticism rather than break into nerd rage at the drop of a hat (not a comment on this post, btw). I'm a long time Diablo player (even back to the first one) and I'm really enjoying this game (granted I never took it to the level of many in this post). I've already gotten far more out of D3 than the majority of $60 games that I've purchased and see myself playing it for a long, long time.
I get that the game is not completely satisfying the absolutely most passionate of D2 players who know every single piece of intricate D2 information and every D2 abbreviation possible, but I also wager that those players probably also represent most of the 1.9% that Blizzard is talking about being in Inferno right now. Just like all of Blizzard's games... this is commonly referred to as the "vocal minority". Yes, they may be the most possionate, but Blizzard has to be careful that when trying to keep that group happy that they don't alter the enjoyment for the 98.1% which are out there playing the game and just enjoying themselves. D3 is going to change over time. Maybe no one will be playing it in 10 years because it never met those expectations. We'll just have to wait and see.

Congrats! You just found out the key importance. People werent crazy into min/maxing "back in the days". People are now. It's gaming as a whole that evolved and people got smarter and realized how much better you can be at a game when you min/max.
So obviously, nowadays we see everything while trying to think about min/maxing. It changes ALOT of things.

When I said "armor, shields and weapons".....I meant armor, shields and weapons. Not jewelry, belts, boots and gloves. Yes, there were some great uniques...but I keep hearing so much talk like elite uniques were dropping all over the place in D2. Any decent unique that fell was few and very far between and often they rolled quite low.
My point was that yellows/rares have always competed with uniques, and in many PvP circles, it was nothing unusual for a PvPer to not have any uniques on other than jewelry and boots.
......And yes, I did PvP...competitively with guilds in prize-dueling melee tournaments. We just have a difference in opinion, no need for the snotty comments.

Don't bother with him, he probably isn't reading anything you post, and if he is he isn't comprehending it. Gaming evolved into a new direction in Diablo 2 and it carried over into WoW for alot of people. Min/Max, Top builds, ect. It erks people that there isn't a "best set" of gear to aim for so they wont be recognized as a unique and powerful butterfly. It's the same arguement with D3 being online only - Blizzard changed something in their game and instead of rising to the game people whine.
They've said this from the very start... It's pretty logical if you think about instead of ranting.
Legendaries are less random and thus easier to get good stats on.
Rares are incredibly random and, if the stars align, can get amazing stat combos.
So generally legendaries should be better but with a lot of a luck a few rares will be better, like finding a perfect etheral BotD berserker axe in Diablo 2.
You don't find EbotDz's.
Finding the Zerker for the RW was extremely rare. In all my years, I never found an eth zerker that was useful for EbotD.
You know what I mean -.- Finding the superior etheral axe with 6 sockets(mby sockets could be added) and then being lucky and getting the perfect runeword.
Ok, http://classic.battl...s/uniques.shtml, 70% of those are crap, right? So my question is, how many good legendarys were found in game already ? I mean, good legendarys, something like CoA, HoZ, Griff were back in diablo 2.. (No, they weren't the best but were close to them)
On my way to hell in diablo 2 almost every single unique i found was useless, thats why im asking if we found those EPIC uniques in diablo 3.
