They're in all difficulties, bashiok just stated that they won't be as useful in NM and be nigh useless in hell.
They can give you more gold find and MF though which could make them useful if you can keep them alive.
yeah i know, but he also said that they'll pretty much be One-shoted in nm and hell. Where's the fun in reviving your merc every 10 seconds??? That to me sounds more like 'leave your merc behind in nm and hell, they useless!'
Well you don't revive them anymore either, they revive themselves after about 20 seconds.
Please no Runewords ever again, there is a reason Legendary items are called Legendary items and they shouldn't be replaced by a big sword with rocks shoved into the holes.
I'll miss Bishibosh, we always yell his name out like idiots when we see him. I'll miss spamming "HELP ME! HELP! HELP ME!" with the num0. I'll miss the teleport sound, and stacking Faster Cast Rate to ridiculous extents, and the Town Portal sound for that matter. The Necromancer, though he might come back. Lut Gholein's music, which actually made me want to start learning to play the flute, which kickstarted my musical career in percussion 9 years ago. Mephisto's laugh after he says "YOU'RE TOO LATE!" Getting owned by Scarab Beetles in the Maggot Lair on Normal difficulty. Tons of other things I can't think of right now.
The main thing I'll miss is the atmosphere. But perhaps it is better to wait and see, we can't properly judge the game from seeing only a few pre-beta gameplay videos.
Yikes.. The voice in D1 is great because it sounds like he is talking to ME, right through the headphones. The D3 voice sounds like its just talking to the character on screen, and that along with the filtered voice really lessens its impact. Meh.
However, I get the feeling D3 will have more of D1's atmosphere than D2 did. D2 never really captured the dark gothic vibe of D1 for me, except for a few fleeting moments.
But, the devil is in the details as they say... I don't think we'll be able to get a feel for where D3 stands until we get to play the whole game. I've read scattered comments by the devs that make it sound like we're in store for some "good" (dark) things. Until I can see it myself I guess I'm just going to give them the benefit of the doubt..

Making another post with my rambling thoughts on D1's atmosphere, etc.
There is a severe lack of a "knight" class. I know it's an archetype that's been beaten to death, but it's just too iconic to be left out. I know there's a desire for originality, but knights are loot magnets. They fit perfectly in the Diablo universe.
And before you go, "dude, the Templar is badass," I don't even care because I can't play as a Templar.
But, yeah, I'll miss the Paladin.

I hate the way you cling to ignorance and pass it off as innocence
I'll miss having more than 4 people in a game(really? My 5 friends and I have to split into groups of 3? /sigh). I'll miss hirelings; I really wish they would implement the Follower system into multiplayer and past normal, such a cool concept that is going to waste in my opinion. I liked assigning my own stat points, but that's not something I'll really miss. I'll miss the amazon and assassin classes, but the Demon Hunter and the Monk seem to be shaping up to be great remakes of the two.
Hard to tell before I've played the game, however I am afraid of two things missing in the game that weren't or could not be fully confirmed up to this point. Number one is gambling.
The crafting system has some of the old gambling system to it, crafted item stats are partially randomized.
You guys make a good point with the music. I'll definitely miss Matt Uelmen.
Maybe I'm being pessimistic, but I doubt any of the dramatic-epic-movie type of music they could compose would even compare to Matt Uelmen's soundtracks.
So disappointing that they're not working with him anymore...
What's with all the music hate? We've heard almost none of it.
That's the music from New Tristram in the Artisan trailer. If you ask me, it's better than anything that was in D2 hands down, it's pretty fucking creepy.
I'm pretty sure it's nostalgia at work here, D2 had like one memorable song (the Tristram theme! Surprise!). Everything else was sort of partially-ambient creepy background music. And none of it was half as good as that song I linked above.
I can't believe no one has said hostile. Going hostile was the best part of joining random games. It sucks that the game limit is going to be 4. But w.e D3 will blow everyone away. I love the Necro to. I'll miss bone spear, iron maiden and iron golem.

Woah hold on there, I'm not gonna argue and say that D2's music was all memorable and can't be surpassed by D3's but come on give credit where credit is due.
Act 2 Lut Gholein's music was great in my opinion as was most of Act 1/2/5's music.
Also in regards to the King Leoric voices, maybe its just me but I have played all of Blizzard games including the entire Warcraft series and Chris Metzen (King Leoric in D1) voices Deathwing/Half of the entire Orc race/Thrall and numerous other characters so I cant listen to him and think "that's King Leoric" or that he sounds creepy or threatening when that's the exact same voice he uses for Thrall. The new Leoric is at-least unique, let him grow into the role and draw you into the atmosphere of his tomb while playing the game before passing judgement.

Like I said, maybe I'm being a bit glass-half-empty here, but even though I like what we've heard so far, Matt Uelmen is just amazing. It's not just the Tristram song for me, either.
Besides the ones mentioned (Lut Golhein and Tristram themes), I absolutely adore "Wilderness", "Dungeon", "Catacombs" and the menu music from Diablo I (a short one though :P). Also "Docks" and the music that plays when you fight Diablo in act IV are pretty awesome, too.
And for the record, the New Tristram theme is the one I've always liked best, out of all the new ones we've known.
@ shackyAak - The foggy area in act I is one of my favourite screenshots released. I can't wait to get the full experience exploring the surroundings and listening to the music (should be creepy) while fighting off the undead. The corpse wagon outside of town adds a lot to this atmosphere. These are old screenshots, the area may look even better when the game ships. There's a video where ghost Leoric beheads his wife using a guillotine. I really like these additions. In D2 it was more subtle, with the stationary bodies, torture chambers, and the harems to name a few.
I agree that a lot of the creepy atmosphere was lost in D2. It was a different kind of atmosphere - more epic. It was still a little bit creepy in some of the dungeons though. Hopefully D3 gets the best of both worlds, depending on what act you're in. I'm ashamed to say that I'd forgotten about those foggy screenshots. It's increased my anticipation for the game a fair bit.
In regards to the music, D1 has the most memorable for me. D2 was good. D3 sounds good so far but I will reserve judgement - I will say that I thought the music in SC1 was a lot better than the music in SC2, and they're probably using the same band, music director in D3 as in SC2 to my knowledge. However we need to hear how it flows in game.
this is old school but Ill miss solo item xfering. dont ask me why but that was something i enjoyed
also, im fairly certain that I will miss 8 person games (was it 8 i cant even remember?). even when you werent partied up you would often run into other players in the towns or in the fields. it gave the game at least some sense of community. I have a feeling with 4 player games solo'ing will just seem incredibly lonely.
PS Hp1notq... i dont mean this to piss you off or anything, and im not sure if im the only one with this problem, but for some reason your sig/avatar combo is the only one ive ever encountered on any forum that slows the load times of the pages. its a cool sig and everything, but would you consider something else? again, just a wishful request, you are certainly entitled to sport whatever sig you want
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.

D2 music is phenomenal. But is that merely because we've all played the game and the music brings back memories of being in a certain act/area? Early on in D2 I scoured the internet to find mp3s of the music. I was finally able to download them once they were available on the Arreat Summit website. Somewhere along the lines I found 2 Matt Uelmann outtakes that are renditions of the Tristram music. I'm sure there are youtube videos with the music but I'll link them here from my dropbox:
Regardless, I think we all enjoy the things in D2 because we went through the game and had moments that were memorable to us, whether it be music, or monsters, or items. I personally remember the 1st time I played and noticed it raining in Act1.. I had pretty crappy graphics so the rain looked very ugly but it was still pretty sweet to me. I think when we get to playing D3 we'll start having new memorable moments that we'll store away for future conversations such as this when Diablo 4 or whatever "the next big thing" is about to happen.
I liked how creepy Diablo 1 was, but seriously, I think most of that was due to the music that I'd never heard before, and it was really freaking hard to see some of the monsters in that game. They blended in so well with the background that by the time you saw them they were right on top of you and you were screaming bloody murder trying to kill them or run away.
I will miss the first part of act5. There were so many monsters there that if you had a decent character build, you could pillage so many enemies. I will not miss trying to find Izual in act4 with the lightning gloams in Hell mode that basically char-lock-insta-killed you.
“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.” - Albert Einstein
What i currently miss in Diablo 3 from Diablo 2, is how Diablo 2 is out now and i'm able to play it right now. I'm unable to play Diablo 3 currently due to it not being out yet, which is something i miss from D2 and something i wish i was currently able to do with D3.

(It didn't really belong in this thread.)
Agreed 10000x over. Sadly, tons of games are guilty of this mistake in various ways--often for skill-choices!
The crafting system has some of the old gambling system to it, crafted item stats are partially randomized.
*I added this 'cause it's part of sound design. FETISHES ARE IN! REJOICE!

I remember my first time in the Cow level, I was a blandly equipped, low level 30. They feasted on human burgers that night..
