I doubt anyone outside of Blizzard has given that question any serious, informed thought, but it’s what’s being asked in an article from The Age.
Guinness World Records today confirmed that the arrival of Modern Warfare 2 late last year was the most successful entertainment launch of all time, eclipsing the box office earnings of anything that Hollywood has churned out.
Day one sales of Modern Warfare 2 have been verified at $434 million, breaking the previous record set by Grand Theft Auto IV, which grossed $335 million in its first 24 hours on sale.
The piece goes on to speculate about upcoming sequels that might break that record, including Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Starcraft 2, and Diablo 3. Most of those seem to be ruled out by the fact that they’re only launching on one platform, while MW2 launched on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, but is that necessarily true? (Probably.)
Wikipedia says that MW2 sold 4.7m total copies during the first 24 hours, with $310m in revenue, and was over $550m after 5 days. Impossible to beat with a PC game? Perhaps not.
WoW’s last expansion sold 2.8m copies in the first 24 hours, back in November 2008. And those sales do not include the massive Asian markets (where Wrath of the Lich King wasn’t playable for some time, and still isn’t in China). What will SC2 sell, with the ginormous Korea fan base for the game, plus the US, Europe, and the rest of the world? And how about Diablo 3, which seems, by my entirely subjective observations, to have a considerably larger pre-release following than Starcraft 2.
Could D3 move more than 4.7m copies in the first 24 hours? It would be an amazing achievement, given that Diablo 2 only sold 1m in the first 24 hours, and needed two months to get to 4m sold. Then again, more people pre-order these days, there are more types of stores selling games, Amazon.com is more widely-used, and Blizzard might even be selling Diablo 3 via digital download on the first day. What do you guys think? Given that the two WoW expansion packs sold 2.4m and 2.8m copies their first days, almost entirely in the US and Europe, 3-4m worldwide doesn’t seem out of the question for Diablo 2.
What do you think?

Theres no way Diablo 3 can sell 4 million in 24 hours. Mostly because its been 10 years (11-12 till release) since Diablo 2. If you ask around odds are that people doesn't even know what this is about.
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.

You might very well be right. Since a few of my friends who play games quite regularly asked me what D3 is...
I can only assume that their PS3s are keeping them busy enough not to care about it.
Bless them. No waiting.
I don't see any potential in D3 for that. Not only does it not have the necessary requirements to cater to the mass of kids and/or idiots to sell in the millions the easy way...
..it doesn't push the genre forward... a genre that is rare and heck, probably forgotten by the younger gamers... And heck, I'm sure all kids would cry at playing with the mouse only and try moving with WASD all day (reasons why I think they should include WASD movements.. but thats another topic).
No, I just don't see it at all. I'm not saying it won't sell, but I doubt it will compete at all.
I'd actually put my bets on less than 1 million for the first 24 hours, and thats not an option...
From what I gather, all the SC2 Fans love Diablo as well, and Vice versa.
Thats still a large crowd, plus all the Die hard Diablo2 Fans.
Thats at least 2-3 Million people.
Also, all the gamers at the previous Blizzcons are aware of it, and are spreading the word.
This coming Blizzcon shows potential for 5th Class reveal, or even a release date, we just dont know.
I spoke with a friend who works at gamestop, I asked him how many reserve copies hes made for D3 recently.
He told me that people are starting to pre-order D3 more so than usual.
He couldn't give me an exact number but he did tell me that they will have to have a midnight opening when Diablo 3 releases.
To be honest, I think you under estimate how many people actually know about D3, and not to mention that Blizzard will
most likely have a few commercials of Diablo 3 before its released.
So thats going to be a boost.
I guesstimate around 4-5 Million copies within the first 24 Hrs.

Nothing short of a miracle will make D3 sell more than 4 million in the first 24h. The FPS market is much larger and more prominent today; you will not sett 4 million copies of D3 in the first 24 hours unless you generate a lot of expectations and market the game very well prior to release to customers that have never played or seen D2 in their life. And like SFJAke said, doing that for a genre that has all but died in the last years isn't easy.
Perhaps if SC2 is a monumental success and alerts people that Blizzard can do more than just WoW will it be possible with proper marketing beforehand. But I doubt it. I also doubt that Blizzard is really interesting in breaking first-day sales records with D3.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I think a little t.v advertisement could do a long way. I was aware that d3 was announced for six months and I didnt even check it out, even though I loved d2 so much when I was younger. The second I finally checked the d3 webpage I had tons of nastalgia and have had the tristram soundtrack, and game play videos playing non stop since then.
Wouldn't it be funny fun if nobody bought the game in the first 24 hours...?
We are going to wait for...what, like 6(?) years for that game. So one more day wouldn't be so tragic.
Just you know- shifting the waiting dilemma on some other people's shoulders....something like we would buy the game...soon.
In the event of a zealous blizzard fanboy coming across this post and getting a near-seizure, I'll say (as though it was not clear enough  ), this is a joke. i repeat, a joke. Relax.
Anyone who has played a blizzard game will most likely get it. I'd say all the people who just game on consoles will not get it because they don't kno wat the fuk to do *more dots guy's voice*
I put 7+ but that depends on when it releases, the farther down the road the lower the sales will be I think, because pc game sales will steadily decline.
Ya, PC is still better than Console, but Console games are making quite a comeback.
I would like nothing more than to see over 7 Million people get this game within the first day, because when I get online I wont have to wait for people.
Hopefully it will be flooded with people.
there should be all sorts of goodies for us when the game releases, not to mention the race to the top!
Who will reach lvl...100? or is it still 99?
anyway, its gonna be sweet.

PC and console games should cost about the same amount. But to make a PC that compete with ps3/360 you will spedn alot more money then in a console.
I like how people say this but don't factor in their hd tvs that cost a bunch of money. That and the fact that a PC is infinitely more useful.
Then you add in the fact that consoles are many many many generations behind in technology.
The saying you get what you pay for never had a better place.
People don't factor the TV when comperering PC and consoles simple for the fact that usually you will buy the TV despite what you plan to spend in games. You will get a TV no matter if you have a console or a PC or both or none. You can also buy a cheaper TV if needed.
And yes, you can get a PC stronger then any consoles, but it's a waste of money in most cases. The majority of PC games don't use the PC tecnology because it's extremely expensive and most of people don't have one. This do not happen with consoles, since everyone has a good machine for a fair price and the companys can develop game that use this tec. Just remember bashiok's speech when he explained why D3 graphics are not that great.
And ofc PC are more useful. But i'm talking about gaming alone. Also consoles has numerous advantges, like hackfree multiplayer and around 15 decent releases per year.

No way diablo will compete with this kind of ultra-hyped FPS game. It's like asking if a suspense movie will compete with a teen aimed block buster.
