How should every player have his inventory layout to be the most efficient?
Use the following list to label your ideal layout.
TP = Town Portal Tome
I = Identify Tome
S = Small charm (1x1)
L = Large charm (1x2)
G = Grand charm (1x3)
K = Keys
Here is the original Inventory for easy copy and paste.
Here is my setup.
Normally, I don't carry around a Tome of Identify, I have two more Small charms where it is.

Well, I always put my TPT on the right side. Since I don't play on B.net or have an inventory filled with charms, and play with PlugY, I always pick up lots of stuff. Uniques, sets, gems, runes, jewels, whatever. And it's a much shorter distance to travel for the mouse back and forth if I have the permanent inventory items that I never move on the right side, and all the collectible stuff on the left. Saves time and irritation
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I arrange items in my inventory how I like it. As to whether it is 'efficient', I really don't how the word applies itself to inventory management.
Makes no difference whatsoever. At least it never did for me.
You will have to be completely clueless to put your shit all over the place and leave idle squares here and there. Stack it the right or to the left. End of story.
And ya, once you get Cain, carrying tomes or scrolls of identify is a waste space.

What happens if you find a zod/shako/something else?
Well, the light sorce build I use has hardly any MF, hardly over... 50 (that's if I'm using a Shako and not a 2 Skills/20 STR/X res all/etc. circlet or a Griffs, in which case it would probably be zero). I really just do key runs after I get my hands on an Infinity, and so I sacrifice any MF I have for FCR/Res/Energy (I like to use energy shield)/ +Light skills/etc.
Now, if I did happen to find something- sometimes I find stuff running chaos runs- I have a friend pick it up. If I run pub runs of any kind in Hell, I always have a friend with me that I'm doing them for. Else, I'm usually on my own in a priv game, so I just pop up a TP -> stash -> TP -> snag booty.

It makes transfering much faster if it's stacked to the right. Lets say you're dropping like 20 pgems on the ground it's less mouse movement if the space is available on the left side of the inventory.

filling the 2x4 rectangle on the right. I don't use charms or carry keys. MAYBE the smallest charm I can find that gives a little cold damage, so I slow enemies, which would be located on the bottom-left corner
LOD and its sucky charms. Always hate them when I rarely play LOD I love to be free of them in classic. Btw got a nice dual leech ring this ladder season

Also, welcome to the forums. Be sure to make an introduction thread if you haven't done so already.
I botched up the grand charm, so it says GC instead of G.
HC = Horadric Cube
gem = Non-perfect gem I carry around in case of gem shrine (yes it's inefficient but I'm used to it :P)
The Tomes and Cube are there so I can easily fit 2x2 items in my inventory.

One SC would be an Anni, the LC would be a torch, the GC's would all be skillers, and the rest of the SC's would be res/lifers.
Edit - After looking at Shatterer's setup, I think I'm going to rearrange mine like follows...
