I just thought of an idea about identification they could implement.
Whenever an item drops, it is in a neutral state, anyone can wear it.
It is powerful, but not at its "full potential".
In order for it the reach its "full potential" you use a scroll, which can be bought in town, which are random scrolls which is totally random, or scrolls from monsters or bosses which allow you to try to sway the stats of your "Identified" item or give it special abilities.
Every time you use a scroll though, it'd take a certain amount of your money, depending on the item, the scroll, and the total amount of money you have.
Once you use your scroll however, it will be only usable by classes similar to yours.
This way, if you have an item that could "never" be beneficial to your class, you would be more swayed to trade it. This would cause the wealthier people to try and gamble to make the best items, taking money out of the economy, and also extend the gameplay quite a bit.

And drown everyone in a stupor. I think they're trying to lessen the choices, not the other way around.
In any case there was nothing wrong with identification scrolls or tomes.
I'd hate to say in a few years: Do you remember the good ol' days with the identify scrolls?
About the "full potential": In D1 you could still use the items even though you could not see every modifier (unidentified), though in D2 you couldn't use them at all if they were not identified.
They could make special room in the inventory screen solely for placing an identify tome (filled with identify scrolls obviously). Every 10 ?? levels you could gain an extra block in that space so you could buy and place a bigger tome that would fit a larger amount of identify scrolls at once, thus eliminating the need for making often trips back to town or whatever to stock up on 'field identify scrolls'.
What I really miss from Diablo 1 are the cursed items. Bring backz ze cursed itemz.

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
Well, they really don't add to the gameplay currently, just putting an idea out there.
I just prefer, more choices, I wanna be special =).
About the tome slot, I think there should just be more of a row of slots just for scrolls that organizes your scrolls for you and keeps them out of your normal inventory.

Well the only way we'd be able to discern them would be by colour, red tie = identify; blue tie = town portal.
They'd have to make a button and a system that automatically arranges your scrolls - which in turn strays with what they've done with the inventory item screen,' one block fits all'. And considering there are (for now) no more than 2 types of scrolls that would be a bit overdoing it.
Yeah, I get what you mean, you choose a different tab from the inventory menu (from wearable items to horadric cube to scrolls or whatever and there's the block with the scrolls).

I was thinking just another a row above the normal inventory so if you wanna identify something you just drag the scroll onto it.
Well for simplicity's sake, they could just make ONE small box for every one type of scroll, but make it unusable from the inventory screen. From there it would only be decorative, like a picture.
Or skip that step too and use just this:
Like when in the gameplay videos they select skill or spells (depending on the character) from the menu located on the lower part of the screen, they could place one small number beside the scroll's special icon there and you know how much scrolls you've got left. If they do allow town portals, then you wouldn't have to open your inventory to summon the portal. Press P for qucik auto launch of town portal or click it with the mouse (like you click the spells) and choose the location. When you don't have any scrolls of that type, they could leave it grayed-out, so you'd know you don't have any left without looking in the inventory (unlike Diablo 2)
Same with the identification scrolls. Open inventory -> click on icon of identify near your skill menu and once the question-mark appears identify the item.
That sounds like the easiest way to go about it. Well, without skipping identify altogether that is. Which will ruin that smile I always used to get when I got a unique item. Oh, look it's unidentified - I feel all 'excited', I identify it -> presto: instant fun.
KEEP THE IDENTIFICATION FEATURE BLIZZARD.

Without them, and without the excitement in seeing a golden, green or yellow colored item falling beside my enemies' corpses, Diablo won't be the same.
And we can't have the above mentioned without identification scrolls, can we ?
Or can't we?
Items in the gameplay screen would appear as they already have before. It would just say: Platemail. And once you took them in your inventory, they'd be already identified for your viewing pleasure. That way you'd still have all the tension and anticipation building up like it was in D1 and 2.
But that way the cursed items won't make a comeback.
And we don't want that to happen.
DO WE?
Repeat after me: " Cursed items, cursed items, cursed items..."

The cursed item should come in the form of special magic modes or unic/rare propeities.
Ex: ''Something'' of the Brute.
+ x STR
+ x VIT
- x DEX
- x Will Power
Or... cursed ''otherthing''
- Atk Rate
- Block Rate
- Evasion (in D3 we will problably have evasion as a subtstat, not a skill)
x% chance of when you hit a enemy that enemy becomes cursed and loose attack rate, block rate and evasion.
So this way we have items with negative effects. However they aren't just crap (i'm not saying D1 cursed's were crap. Some have insane base stats and many are very good items, specially the weapons).
And the identification will be basically the same as in D2. I just hope the equipament drop rate are much lower, so we don't have to pass half of the time selecting good drops in the ground.
I say do away entirely with the indentification scrolls and deal with a solo per act NPC that identifies for you. The scrolls always take up room and once you freed cain in 2 having them was almost worthless...

"What is the use of complaining about something we know very little of?"
I think Bashiok may have touched on that though, ronoldenburg, in that going back to town just to Identify things was more of a hassle than anything, and they wanted less of those annoying things in it.
I wouldn't mind if, when you picked it up, it had a list of however many unidentified properties, and then it kind of automatically identifies it for you, but only after it's been in your possession for a while.
Say, every 30 seconds (or whenever), 1 unidentified modifier gets revealed, so it will encourage you to hold onto potentially good things for longer, because the last modifier could be a really good one.
Suppose this would only really work for the D3 equivalent of rares, where no-one really knows what's going to come up on them
The only thing I can remember about identification as far as the gameplay videos was one that showed a Scroll of Identify drop. Don't know how it will work or even if they'll keep it, but it's in there.

I must say i do like this idea a WHOLE lot. Just being able to identify it was crap because if it didn't have the right mods people dumped and went looking for another one. This would make item possesion a little more improved i think....

I kinda hope it stays like it was in D2, it was always fun wondering what the item would be. At least to me.
Exactly, the whole point of an item being unidentified is to have a random chance of stats. Which is why finding a rare item and identifying it is exciting.
I have recently noticed you and I have a lot of the same viewpoints. (Which means your awesome)

I would prefer identification gone. It just slows down the game and/or forces you to carry a ton of ID scrolls and ID junk then throw it out.
Maybe they could also decrease the amount of items dropped + the percentage of junk, but right now, 99% of ID'ed items will also be junk and that's annoying.

You aren't really "forced" to do anything.
A lot of people prefer to not carry ID scrolls.. and that's fine.
If you see an item that needs to be ID'd then just don't ID it if you don't want to.
It doesn't slow down the game for you.. only for the player that sits there and ID's every item they come across that is Unidentified.
