This question just popped into my head, and I wanted to see what the general populace thinks.
Do you hope the D3 market will be driven by:
A. Actual in-game currency(the gold that drops from enemies)
or
B. Based off certain items(like SOJs, Charms, PGems)
Personally, I hope the actual in-game currency is of more importance in D3. Frankly, it was so confusing trying to figure out exactly how much some item is worth in Sojs, Pgems, or what not. D2 got to the point where the in-game money was pretty much flat out worthless. You would only use it to buy what? Potions? Repars? Yea.......worthless.
Meh, I kind of liked diablo II's economy. It made it really hard to get better items, yes. But now if all you have to do to get better items is collect a shitload of gold and go to auction house, it could be boring. I'm so tired of games where all I do is farm for ages for gold to buy some item.. and rather the real good items be 'priceless' like they wer ein Diablo II pretty much.

I guess I see your point. Not to say I hated the D2 economy, but after experiencing other economies from other games, I truly prefer the in-game currency route better. It just gives a better sense of uniformity throughout the game whether your in the low levels or high levels. It gives you a tangible number in your head that you can strive to achieve, as oppose to hoping and praying to get that one item that some people never get the chance to get.
All the WoW players are going to say Gold.
All the Old-Diablo Players are gonna say items.
Let's the battle begins.
By the way, I REALLY HOPE, REALLY HOPE that they DON'T add an auction house.
lol I played WoW for around 2 months total when it first came out, and have never touched it since.
D1 and D2, I played the hell out of those games for years along with my buddies.
With that said, I still stick by my current choice which is to use the in-game currency.
Frankly, all I'm truly hoping for is if they can still somehow make the in-game currency relevant in the market. Just don't make it useless like it was in the previous games.
I dont think its one specific thing, not even in D2. You could always trade runes for items, items for runes, sojs for items, items for sojs, and so on.. Its not one specific thing. I've never played WoW, so im not an expert on the gold subject.. Though I would think that in order for the gold to have any significat impact on the market, they would need to give it a significant role; thus turn naysayers into believers.

Lace me with the words of destruction and I'll explode, but supply me with the will to survive and watch the world grow.
i voted gold currency because that seemed like the obvious real world choice, and made the most sense.
but i should have voted for the other because in the world of diablo, it doesnt make sense at all. Gold as a currency over items doesnt make sense simply because no one will ever trade a decent item for gold, because that would imply that the item can be purchased anywhere.
and if thats the case it takes the fun out of looting and actually hoping for drops of items from bosses and what not.
if i could buy items like runes and sojs from shops for money there would be no unique ness of anything within the game because i can just get the best items from just killing millions of skeletons....
come on people, currency will most likely still only apply to upgrades like potions, mercenaries, repairs and make teachings from other npcs. i dont know

Sorry, an auction house is far and away the best way to trade out of anything that has been thought up.
In D2 you end up with mediocre items that should be worth something, but end up being worth nothing or very little, and truly great items end up being traded for less than they are worth. The system is bad. In an auction house system, everyone sees the item. No need for games like "XXXXX Godly helm here" than many people could use but no one checks out because very few people even see the game, and fewer still take the time to join and check out.
I for one hate having to sit in games for nearly an hour to trade something, or having dozens of mules full of stuff that I just don't feel like taking the time to trade. An auction house system would let you drop it in, and go back to playing the game and not sitting around doing nothing, which is the way it should be.

I hate WoW, and have let Diablo consume a lot of my childhood, but i think that a gold currency is definitely the best way to go in this game. The HR system just flat out sucked, as did the soj, it was the dumbest thing ever.

Nah
Seriously, Currency.

Rubbish...
It would not work anyway because when you die you lose your gold, and it's perfect like that.
