I'm hearing you have to level a character to level 10 before you can even make a hardcore character... What gives? Why would they make something so arbitrary as level 10 to say "GOOD SHOW BRAVO now you can make a hardcore character!"?
Hey, did you know? A while back you had to complete normal difficulty before being able to make a hardcore character. Level 10 is nothing, shouldn't even take an hour if you try.
I know it won't take long... but I mean.. I kinda wanna experience the game totally from a hardcore perspective... not knowing what to expect form things down the line before I run into them.
To prevent newbies to accidently create a hardcore character as first character and be frustrated by having to start over after dying at level 8. Level 10 limit is fine.

There really isn't anything of significant difficulty or perspective to be gleamed from up to level 10. The game will become far, far more interesting and "surprising" than the first ten levels.
I believe you need to beat normal to start making Hardcore characters. Level 10 is just in the beta because it's about the level you reach by finishing the beta.
Indeed a very useless restriction. The warning at the creation of the character is more than enough for newbies to fully realize what they are getting into.
I played the beta once (a friend gave me) with the WD, and this was my first Diablo experience ever. I don't like to rush, so the full exploration took me 3.5 hours, but guess what? I never died. So if I could open a hardcore character instead of the softie I would have the same experience, plus the adrenalin rush of not knowing what to expect from the game as a first time player.
I'll still play at least up to Hell if not Inferno on Softcore to get more used to how strong the bosses are before stepping in to play Hardcore. It'd be too hardcore for me (especially with the suicidal builds I'm making) to go Hardcore from the start.
1. In Diablo II it was a successful playthrough of the entire game to access Hardcore. This was only changes in the last patch, so don't pretend like they're being unreasonable.
2. It should STILL be a playthrough of normal.
3. You're a fool if you think you're going to succeed in HC without experiencing the game first. Have fun re-rolling a dozen characters while I'm steaming through Inferno on my first one.

The danger is what makes it exciting People can enjoy the game in different ways; not everyone has the goal of reaching Inferno as fast as possible
Never played HC properly before, didn't like the notion of losing everything I'd worked hard for, so I haven't followed the news about it very closely.
You won't lose your gold, your stash, or your vendor progression. Dying still sucks, but it's not a total loss.
A quick question; once you hit level 10 can you convert your character to HC or do you have to start a HC char from scratch? Seems weird if you have to create a new character if your sole intention is to play HC. Either the SC level 10 will be deleted straight away or neglected and collect cobwebs
You can't convert SC to HC. You must create a new HC character, and everyone will know that you risked it all from level 1.
I expect a lot of hardcore purists will delete their only softcore character within 1 hour of getting the game
Cheers for the info. It seems strange to me that the mechanic will be such a throw away one. I neither agree nor disagree with the need to reach a certain marker to start a HC character, it just seems so pointless (to me) that it's a meaningless gesture for most. Blizz constantly talk about character immersion and making the game an experience yet they implement a system where thousands of characters will be created with the sole purpose of reaching level 10 and then be deleted.
If Blizzard were worried about comlete newbies to the daiblo series "accidentally" creating a HC character and getting annihilated time and again, why not just create a one time pop up screen when creating your first HC char that introduces the mechanics of the mode and clearly defines the game type? Old school players can easily close the box whilst newbies can be directed to perhaps try leveling up first.
I can almost hear the screams of thousands of level 10 characters being deleted in the first few hours of servers going live
There is a popup that informs the player about hardcore. But, we all know that isn't enough to prevent plenty of people from accidentally doing it anyway. It will STILL happen with the level 10 restriction as people make their second characters. I don't have stats for the #s, but I'm assuming the hardcore playerbase is a small fraction of the total playerbase. Given that assumption, it makes a lot more sense for Blizzard to slightly inconvenience the hardcores to prevent a bunch of uninformed players from raging/quitting over their first character dying halfway through normal.

There is a popup warning you about it.
I think the restriction is to force people a taste of the game first and see if they really want to commit to what HC implies. Also since it forces you, it really means stupid people won't make the bad choice and end up frustrated. Blizzard wants to avoid as much frustrating experiences as they can, it makes a lot of sense to me.
I hear what you guys are saying, but saying I should be thankful for wasteing an hour on a char i will likely delete? gemme a break its there solely for lil Timmy so he doesnt get his feelings hurt when his first char is a hardcore char cause he can't read and can't acuratly click on anything and checks the hardcore option. If the warning doesnt stop them they either are too young to read and therefore too young to play the game or need to check into Zoolander's school for people who can't read good.
Yeah, this really annoys me. I want to play blind Hardcore, which kinda means I need to create a throwaway char to do the first 10 levels on, and it's not that little and even if it was little it's still your first experience with the game...
I feel like if they made a pop-up after you click create character (hardcore being checked) and it stated the hardcore rules with a lil box in it that made you type "hardcore" that would be sufficient... That would take care of all the misclicks and whatever they feel like they're protecting people from.

And really one hour is nothing.
