Didn't they say originally that they plan for the higher tier greater rifts to be the best way to farm? ATM it is defiantly not that, not even close to that in fact. I get that they are there for the competition factor to but there's no reason they can't also have a decent level of reward, currently i'm on tier 31 as a solo-DH which means that elites with extra health have 5 billion hp and I die almost instantly to everything, I would say it's 2 - 3x harder than T6 yet on average I get 1.5legs, 0 gold and 50 blood shards while T6 gives 4.5 legs, decent amount of gold and 110 blood shards...
Am I just being quite unlucky, or do others feel like the drop-rates are fairly abysmal in these greater rifts? I get it's PTR, subject to change blah blah but that doesn't mean we can't talk about it :P.
To be honest I commonly get 2-3 legendary per run. T6 is better for farming items, sure, but grifts are generally faster for obvious reasons and your goal should be upgrading new gems, not gear. Chances of upgrades are still there, so I don't believe that grift are un-rewarding.
You should join them with a different kind of grinding idea.
Generally faster? Once you reach your cap, which doesn't take long then they are slower... Atm i'm on T31 and it takes me around 16 - 18min to clear dependent on the mobs there while a T6 takes me 8 - 10, gives me more than dbl the avg legs actually gives gold and gives double the blood-shards on top of being a stupid amount easier to do.
I agree that once gems are introduced upgrading them will be an extra thing, although we don't quite know how that will work yet and even so a single T6 rift giving 2-3x the reward while requiring both less focus and time just seems ridiculous... In order to match it, T30+ rift bosses should be dropping 5-6 legs, 10mln+ gold and 100+ shards... Anybody who has the gear to clear that difficulty in the timeframe is only looking for stat-upgrades of there current gear anyway so increased drop rates makes sense.
Right now, it feels like drop-rates arn't increasing based on difficulty... i've had the same avg drops from Tier 1 all the way to Tier 31, same amount of shards... Everything.
I would say greater rifts are there to answer the pleas of those looking for some sort of end game. As it is, t6 is ridiculously easy. At least once a person gets to 30-34 there is a noticeable degree of added difficulty.
At the moment, anything past 35, is almost too hard to solo clear. Which is fun....at least for those of us who kept falling asleep in t6
First two Greater rifts I did (lvl 1 and lvl 6) which took 5 for first and 3 for the next, I got 11 legendaries.... 6 off first one, 5 off the next.... ~10 mins for 11 legendaries is INSANE.
BUT, I Do agree that it should SCALE with the rift lvl, higher up = more rewards.
Greater rifts are for competition imo, not loot. Loot is just a bonus. As long as they fix all the issues with them (furnace on follower / remove pylons completely / balance the density and fix exploity items (beckon sail atm making you invincible, yeah i know, it will get fixed)) i don't' see a problem with them.
If this were true, they'd be pointless to the majority of the playerbase. Competition is a secondary purpose of the Greater Rifts for most people, if it's even a purpose for them at all. For me, competition is 0% of the reason to do anything in D3.
I don't remember them saying anything about Greater Rifts taking over everything else in terms of "rewarding" loot.
Actually, the way I see it, Greater Rifts are meant to be for people who want to compete with each other, and the Legendary Gems + Upgrades are their way of making it slightly worth your time with a unique reward that can't be gotten anywhere else (cause you're already takin way longer to complete it than you would in a "normal" Rift).
But for "normal" farming, I expect normal rifts to still be the way to go. And that's how it should be, since the focus on Greater Rifts is progressing as far as you can, as fast as you can.

I don't know about this. I have made it so far all the way till level 35 in a group (i know, not that far, but okay i guess), and we i/d the legendaries and drop them for others to grab.. in less than 2 hours you have a very full screen full of orange/green beams. Not to mention that paragon experience is crazy at that level. i think it will be a good place to farm.
it is just a matter of getting a bunch of level 25-30 keys and farm away in there.
They are rewarding enough. The only problem with doing them only I've noticed is you tend to run out of veiled crystals and arcane dust since mobs dont drop anything. I think the rit guardian should drop large stacks of both at the end to compensate.
I actually think it's fine if this is not "the best" for everything. Greater rifts give insane amounts of XP (probably more than stupid Malthael runs), unique loot with the gems, and e-peen with leaderboards. For gold you want to find Greed's Realm - which can't spawn in Greater Rifts, so there's a reason to do traditional rifts or farming keys or bounties. For max legendaries T6 runs might still be best. It would be awesome if T6 would give us different things to do: do I want to upgrade my amulet? Let me do keys/ubers. Do I want to farm blood shards, general items, and materials? Let me do T6 rifts. Do I want to get XP or a better legendary gem? Let me do Greater Rifts.
I hope they don't make Greater Rifts "the place to go". It's okay if there's a different spot for different goals.
Oh yes the XP is ridiculous. Playing the ptr for say 4hours a day, the last 3 days, I went from 720 to 739 paragon. And I need about 16b/level. At tier 42 I was getting 3/4 of a whole level, so about 12b exp in the less than 15m it took to clear the rift.
Greater Rifts for epeen competitions and legendary gems.
Regular Rifts for your standard farming.
More options to suit whatever you feel like doing. Why bother with standard Rifts if Greater Rifts give you everything (items, gems, mats, experience)?

I agree, but I still feel that a few yellow items and a bunch of gems and stuff isn't as rewarding as it should be.

Precisely this ^ worded it a lot better than me.
I'm not saying Greater Rifts aren't rewarding enough, I couldn't tbh since I haven't even had the time to play on them enough. I'm just saying Blizzard never stated they're meant to be the absolute best end-game for everything. And that's probably for the best, as Bagstone explained.
If you're trying to race to the top in Greater Rifts, I sure hope your character is geared to the max already or else forget it. If you're geared, you're going for the bragging rights and the ability to stroke your epeen more. You'll get some bonuses on the side.
If you're still looking for gear, mats, etc. that's what the standard Rifts are for. Leave the Greater Rifts solely for the PvEvP element.
I couldn't agree with Zero, Bagstone, and Jaetch more.
As players we need more options and fewer "this is the best place to play bar none."
If it weren't for fragments and cache rewards, all we'd be doing is sitting in rifts the whole damned time because Josh decided that rifts > everything else. The more they migrate away from that - to the point that just doing bounties is a viable way to get random gear, to the point that campaign mode could be a nice change-of-pace without sacrificing massive amounts of loot - the better we are as players.
One of the best ways to create longevity is to utilize the amazing amount of possible places we have to farm instead of shoehorning everyone into a singular activity. It would be a step backwards for the game if Greater Rifts were the absolute best place for everything you need because (as we've seen with RiF) it creates this "how can I spend as little time as possible NOT doing this other stuff?" meta game which is just silliness.
The game becomes robust and interesting if, much like loot, everything has a purpose. Loot kinda still needs work because not everything has a purpose. Take that principle and apply it to the whole game.
Given that Greater Rifts will provide a unique reward you can't get anywhere else (legendary gems), I think it's important that they not also be the best place to get regular loot.

Won't greater rifts be the spot to get the legendary gems and upgrade them? If so, they will be a place where some more character power will be gained as well.
Yes, if you're hunting down the best legendary gems/upgrading them, you'd run Greater Rifts. Just like if you want to get a really nice Hellfire Amulet, you'd run Ubers.

Even you agree with this now (remember our Aughild debate?), that's nice to see. I already said back then that doing only rifts was not a good thing for the game.
Let's just hope we don't get this déjà-vu out of the blue:
Patch 2.16: We have removed the uber keys from the game. Crafting a Hellfire Amulet now only costs 2k Arcane Dust and 3k Veiled Crystals. We felt a lot of people didn't like moving out of a (greater) rift and couldn't find a way to please them.
Am I just being quite unlucky, or do others feel like the drop-rates are fairly abysmal in these greater rifts? I get it's PTR, subject to change blah blah but that doesn't mean we can't talk about it :P.
