I didn't think about the people leaving the game part, but I could see it. Some people will use it like the new "gearscore" from wow and I never cared for that.
Part of it could be they don't have an infrastructure in place to broadcast it to you. It's probably easier to just show you your individual magic find. The MF is probably calculated on the server and is modified by the elites you've killed plus passives and skill like "Grim Harvest" and reporting that number as it's constantly changing could be a pain or just plain confusing to some players.
I don't think it's a big deal as you can always ask your party if they're running MF if you really care.
I believe blizzard have mentioned that they wouldn't show the avg of MF/GF. On beta patch 14 " Magic Find and Gold Find are now shared amongst party members. The average combined value of the entire party's Magic and Gold Find applies to all players regardless of location in the game world. The averaged values will not display in the UI"
By showing the numbers, your just giving players more things to find wrong, complain about, and leave. Im sure it wouldnt hurt to ask in game, or perhaps just play with friends you know who will honestly tell you the amount of mf they have, Otherwise there would be unlimited games where people join, see the mf is to low, say 'oh well, nothing good is gonna drop with these noobs' etc .. and quit .. Repeat endlessly !!
Ya that's understandable but I still think it would be nice to have some way to know what your really getting
I'm glad they ain't showing it, it would ruin the whole point of them doing it in the first place.
For Diablo 2 you had to calculate the MF by your own, there was no ingame tool tip showing the %.
At least we dont have to do that anymore while soloing.
If for nothing else they shouldn't put it so that you need to do something at least, calc/plan etc, play with friends you know when want to go item grinding etc, stupid that all is automatized and that you don't have to calc/do anything except run and kill, even little things like this, should really avoid this kind of making game easiest possible with no brain at all.
I wish they'd show it, I'm interested in knowing what the MF for my group is. I mean... I won't care enough to leave in most cases, but if some jack wagon is running with 0 MF I don't want to group with him. I'd rather not have to ask for MF at the start of each game and feel like a jerk. I just want to avoid the most extreme cases.
If it's that big of a deal to you then you'll go through the effort of trying to inspect everyone. Hopefully the extra effort will make you think it's not worth it to cry about the average.
If you have more MF then they are killing stuff faster for you. If you have less then you are helping with their drops in exchange for their damage carrying you.

Thing to consider... That "jackwagon" with no MF will most likely have more survival or damage dealing stats. Which means they will be making it easier for you to kill mobs. Sometimes faster killing is just as important as your +MF. If you spend an hour and kill 100 mobs with 100% or you spend an hour killing 50 mobs with 200% MF, what would the difference be?
Magic Find, like always, is just a CHANCE to find a rare/legendary item. Just because everyone is rocking super high MF doesn't mean you'll always find something every run. You also have to consider that we don't know how hard inferno is going to be and if you can get away with running pure MF builds.

Why not?
I would like to know what i am getting in the particular game.
- Type "Bitchez, y'all MF/GF naow!"
- Receive answers
- Calculate
Seriously though, I don't have a problem with this.
I don't think I'm gonna be playing with strangers that much.
inspect
inspect
+you
divide by four
A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!

They're trying to avoid that debacle from WoW.
