Many people complain that Diablo III might have a cartoon-like style similar to that of World of Warcraft. This would generally make it a different universe then the Diablo one we knew. However, I believe the chances of this happening are indeed, large.
Diablo II's initial wallpapers were in the style that we so much love:
As time passed on though, the art Blizzard put out became more WoW like. For example, look at their most recent Diablo II wallpaper:
Even before this they had wallpapers done in this cartoon style. Maybe it's something to be concerned with, but maybe it isn't. What do you think?

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Nah, I'm not concerned. Thats just one artist who did that. I'm not sure if he only does concept art, but he has done many other concept arts too. I think he mainly does things for Warcraft, with diablo art on the side. But its really the in-game art we need to be concerned about.

I see what you mean, but wallpaper hint a lot also. Of course they wouldn't make a complete graphics overhaul for Diablo II, so any art they decide to do later on would have to be scrutinized in the form of wallpapers.

I think, in this day and age, to preserve the life-like realistic artistry of the older Diablo games, they would need tons of detail to make the style look both real and non-cartoony, and that detail would have to be finely done.

Well, it doesn't need to be like Mortal Kombat, where if you cut off a human's head 20+ gallons of blood squirt out, but yes, to maintain the level of terror and realism in relation to places like the Durance or the fourth level of the Catacombs, I would agree.
Now it's not nearly as difficult as it was during the times of World of Warcraft. Detail could easily be inscribed, especially with the recent graphically demanding games: Crysis and Far Cry 2 especially. But Blizzard aims to keep games demanding enough for the ideal home computer.

Blizzard's lead artist is the badass Samwise Didier. He prefers Warcraft over the other franchises, and his style is very exaggerated and illustrative. But he's mostly conceptual, too.
Blizzard has a lot of artists, both illustration and CG. Everything goes through a long iterative process, where each artist imbues the work with his or her own style and vision. In the end, though, it's a collaborative process, and eventually everything syncs up and comes together as the art department works on a common vision.
There's nothing to worry about; the graphic, gothic style that typifies Diablo is DEFINITELY gonna stay. Trust me.

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
All in the Forger's wake is left bereft and fallow
Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the dark Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

QTF.
The artists don't necessarily define the game, even though that can be the case. Judging from what I've heard in Blizzard interviews and the like however, this is not the case when they make games.
Unless of course you count Metzen in. He definately decides what happens in the story department, and he's an artist as well. But story isn't graphics
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I can see the Diablo series only getting more demonic. Blizzard knows enough to separate they're two fantasy franchises. While Warcraft has received most of the attention in the past years, it's (I believe) due to the nature of the WoW gameplay. Not because Blizzard decided Warcraft style equates to instant cash.

It would be easier to prove your point if you compared D1 to D2.
