Maybe that's why farming in this game is so lame. Because over half of the items that drop are left on the ground. I just had 3 rares and 1 blue drop, all were left on the ground because they were all below i61. It saddens me.

yea i dont pick up anything under 61 unless its a ring or amulet. waist of space but i also hate having to hold down control and mouse over stuff because i don't know the names quite yet
Yea, I do that too. I find it takes too much time to sort through items I have picked up once they are in my bags, so it's much easier just to pick the 61+ items. I guess it makes farming go faster, which in the long run earns me more money? That's the idea anyways.

I've earned over 1 mil gold in the past week picking and selling lvl 60- stuff. It's not much by rich guy's standards but it helps me in my measly 150-200k gold/hour ratio.
Now the level 58-59 items are usually very hard to sell (unless it's a well rolled weapon with reduced level requirement), since the enemy is hardly willing to pay 25-50k for an upgrade that will be replaced in 30 minutes, but ilvl 51-56 sells really well (sold stuff for as high as 75k), as long as you're capable of taking a quick look at it and realizing it's a good item, something really easy with the ctrl feature.
Even blues with high mainstats, +armor rolls, and sockets can sell for 30-50k gold. It's all about knowing what they're worth.

You know you can just turn loot names ON right, that way they appear all the time, no matter what.

i think his point is that he can see the name, but has to press ctrl to see the tooltip that shows the item level.
I still pick up greys lol... I just can't stand the thought of gold going wanting!
You're losing gold by picking up these items.
Same goes for anything below ilvl61 really. The time spent seeing prices on the AH, going back to town, etc. It's just not worth picking up anything below 61.
Except for rings and amulets that is. I pick rings and amulets up no matter what the ilvl, though I guess I should only pick up 60+ probably. I don't understand why they made things different for jewlery, just makes it more confusing.

The only problem with that is that they take up one of your AH spaces (I have had no luck selling that stuff in trade). If I list a bunch of so-so items for 10k-50k I am simply going to run out of room and, at the same time, I'm not listing better items. I tried it, but it cost more time than it was worth. I do vendor them though.
heh i sometimes get bored and just do a full clear of all 4 acts on nightmare then throw some gems in the socketed weapons/armor and they all sell fast.. at least 10k a pop and when i get those 100+ stat roll on an level 27 item i can get 50k+ with no effort...funny how insane the stats are on that stuff when rolling it with a 340 MF lol
I've gotten quite a few well rolled ilvl 57-60 items that I've either sold for super high amounts of gold, or been able to use on one of my characters. Getting a pair of ilvl 58 boots with ~100 dex, ~80 vit, ~50 resist all, ~50 fire resist, ~10 move speed, and ~150 life/s made picking up sub ilvl 61s worth it to me. And I've gotten a good amount of items like that, lots of awesome MF gear with ideal stat rolls always sell for great, even sub-ilvl61. Maybe they won't sell for 1million+, but I'm not that intense of a farmer, usually only one or 2 act1 farms per day, so even a nice 50-100k item is totally worth selling, for me.

I think people are losing money by not picking up blues or sub 60 yellows. I should probably sit down and do the math before I comment, but its just my opinion based on farming Act 1 for 200 hours.
You're spending more time hovering over an item to see the tooltip than you would be to pick it up. The only thing in my inventory at the beginning of a run is a stack of healing potions, so I have a good bit of space. I pick up everything and when my inventory gets full... TP to town, dump all the yellows in my stash, run to the merch to repair and sell all blues, go back through portal and continue. It can't take more than 30 seconds - 1 minute.
I probably pick up 150 blues during a run and this really adds up (150 * 500g) = 75k/run. That's only 13 runs to pick up 1 million worth of blues. (I think my 500g average estimate might be a little high, but I'd say it's close).
The problem isn't that some items are left on the ground but the problem is the AMOUNT of items you leave on the ground. A rare pack will often drop 2-4 rares and sometimes ALL of them are crap... even if you're doing Act 3. Also, the skill->reward ratio is way off. For example, I often kill a difficult pack in Act 3 and I get 2 rares, a lvl 55 and a lvl 58. This is a fairly common experience for me. It makes you think, "Fuck this game" because you feel like you just wasted the last 2 minutes of the game playing and possibly some gold if you died for no possible chance at an upgrade. At least if a ilvl 61+ item drops, you know you have a chance at an upgrade (unless it's a weapon which is a whole different layer of crap about the poor loot system).

The key point to consider here is that it takes time to constantly go back to town to do this. I'll pick up rares even if they're low level because they're likely to be worth at least 500-1000G but a lot of the sub ilvl 60 items are worth sub 500G and just aren't worth the time. All that time you spend going back to town could instead be used to kill monsters and get a drop worth 1M alone. I really don't think it's a good idea to pick up sub ilvl 60 blues unless you mouse over it and see it's worth around 1k.
Once you remember the names of items, you won't even to mouse over them. After doing loads of Warrior's Rest runs I know pretty much all the armor names and most of the weapons. It's very handy to save time.

Don't you go back to town anyway, though? Maybe you don't if you're only doing Warrior runs, but I TP to town all the time instead of running to the waypoints...
Festering woods.. I'll kill the 2 elites outside, hit the 2 dungeons, and then TP to town from the 2nd dungeon. Since I'm going back to town anyway, why not just pick everything up and spend 30 seconds unloading it at the merchant before heading to the crypts. I'll TP out of the crypts before heading to northern highlands, TP from the watchtower before heading to leorics.... etc.
It just doesn't make sense for me not to sell everything since I'm heading back to town all the time, anyway. I could probably skip picking up some stuff in the cemetery and HoA, because I do get full and TP out at least once in those areas.
Maybe I'm going to say something very dumb (you tell me what I am missing) but as far as I know, the repair bills have been dramatically increased due to people graveyard zerging.
What would be the downside of :
- increasing repair bills even MOAAAAR (x2 to x4 what they already are)
- increasing the npc-selling value of blues and yellows by say x5 or such
That way : people who GY-zerg have even huger repair bills, with 3 items to vendor to cover them, and the guys really farming have same repair bill, but IT IS COVERED by the fruit of the farm.
Honestly, I don't think dying every second pack of elites is "that" bad. (I don't, but I wouldn't punish someone for that) But indeed GY-Zerg (aka dying 5 times every single pack) should be punished.
The one who dies every second pack has a 50-K repair bill after maybe 10 packs or such. With 4 items per pack (average 500 gold) that's 20K. Doesn't cover even half of the repairs.
As well, if they start being worth more at npc's, people won't leave blues/low yellows on the ground anymore.
I think part of the problem with repair bills and what they dev's forget to take into account was the new level 60's and people just entering Inferno. I hit 60 in Act 2 of Hell with 600k gold and immediately bought 3 lvl 60 items from the AH, which took me down to 350k. I think those gold #'s are pretty realistic for someone working their way through the game.
A number of those people are really struggling for gold and can't even upgrade from the AH because most of their money is going towards repairs trying to get through Act 1. Sure, upping the repairs costs isn't an issue for those of us with lots of gold laying around.

Even if you TP to town you're wasting time running to the vendor and selling all the crap (not to mention all the time it takes to pick up the items). You don't realize it until you stop picking up crap items how much time you save by just not picking them up (hint: it's a lot).

Yes, if I were worried about pure gold/min ratios etc and selling on the AH a lot it would be a net loss. Just a compulsive habit
