So my boyfriend is really upset with his Monk since their class was nerfed a bit after 4 monks down'd Diablo by rotating a few skills. I've read on the actual forums that a few melee classes where upset about D3 endgame and not being able to solo content passed Hell.
I'd really like to encourage my boyfriend to stick with his Monk since he's already gotten to 56 and I'm at 60 - I don't really want to wait for him to level a new character to play with me again!
I'll be lurking the Monk and Barb threads (his co-worker plays a Barbarian) for more concrete information, but I thought I'd throw up this quick poll to see if anyone else has been affected by their initial class decision entering end game.
Please also post WHY you chose to play your class or if you plan to re-roll now that you're in end game to keep this thread going.
I couldn't create another poll for the Wizard (3 poll maximum) but Critical Mass was nerfed recently. Personally I haven't rerolled over it, but I have re-arranged my skills and I'm playing fine. I'd like to hear thoughts on this as well!
UPDATE:
(Since a few people have been bad mouthing the man that I'm in love with)
My boyfriend hasn't exactly re-rolled BECAUSE of the nerf. I think its part boredom and part unsure of how to play the Monk end game. He doesn't usually play these types of games, and I've been going on and on about D3 for months. So he purchased a computer a week before launch and bought the game at midnight release so he could spend time with me. MMORPG is my world, not his. He's playing this game for me which I think is amazing and he's been getting better and better every day! So he's still new to this "world". Basically the purpose of this thread was to find ways to help him play his class better and encourage him to keep playing it etc. Not to bad mouth him He's an amazing boyfriend!
Play what you like, that's more important, you're gonna have to stare at that character all the time. I really didn't like the wiz changes and feel very over kited but Li Ming and I are in this together and we'll make it work out.
Re-rolling due to nerfs is an ultimately futile playstyle. He'll level a character, it'll get nerfed, he switches characters, that class gets nerfed, he re-rolls, gets nerfed...
Endless cycle. Best thing to do is just stick with what you enjoy: now, if he doesn't enjoy playing monk regardless of nerfs, then that's a good reason to re-roll.
I'm playing my Monk in Inferno. Cleared Act 1, tried Act 2 but didn't get too far. Now farming for more gear/gold before heading back. I still love the class, and don't feel underpowered or 'broken'. I know that if I'm struggling, then it's down to me needing more skill or better gear, not a failed design for the class.
In short: tell him to man up and L2P. Monks are fine.
After playing Barb I've decided to roll up a wizard because of two reasons:
1) I feel like being melee does put you at a disadvantage in inferno, especially if you're under-geared (basically inferno is a gear check, but ranged heroes can somewhat get around that by kiting). It's not really a problem for me that I'm struggling and need to farm, but I just want to be farming the best gear I can which is found in inferno, hence the re-roll.
2) When I join pub games, you're almost always bound to end up with a bad composition team, or a bad player, or a player that is severely lacking in items, or they go afk half the time, etc. etc.Basically, I feel that if I want to stand a chance in inferno, I need a decent team set up, and the only control I really have over that is if I play with my friends. But the thing is is that it's pretty much impossible to perfectly align your playtime up with theirs, so rolling another char and levelling that one up when they're not available is time well spent.
With enough gear, any class is godmode. Barbs are facetanking act 4 inferno with the best gear out there. I can only hope my wizard can do the same with the best gear out there.
I agree with above posters who say melee will be the best over time but right now its so much easier to farm inferno as a ranged. I started with a barb and cleared a1 inferno but got tired of smashing my face into a brick wall in a2 so I rerolled DH. Having a much easier time on my DH now (its still tough, but doable at least). I plan to return to my barb once the game sorts itself out a little bit.
I rerolled Barb to Monk... I only like to play melee really. I do wish they faired better in the game, but I am hoping it eventually gets balanced out. I'm not gonna play a class I dislike just to be over-powered and nerfed later on, heh.
Started off Wizard - FA Nerf Hit Rolled Monk
Powerleveled Monk - Boon Nerfed Next Day Rolled WD
Played WD - Got Bored Rolled DH
Playing DH now until something else gets nerfed
All in all, I'm glad I did it though, 4 60's. I absolutely hate leveling and glad it's behind me.
Playing Barb since release and atm pushing forward in act2 inferno.. I have a feeling in the long run melee will be the strongest characters to do full inferno clears with full valor over and over again...
I have a barbarian and they are very geared dependent. Not a problem at all except you'll need high resistance to proceed though acts cuz I drop in act II ( have been kiting but sometimes my revenge doesn't proc for heal). I also have over 550+ resistance except for physicall which is 600+ unbuffed. I like the barbarian but I feel that it needs to get buffed. On the side I'm leveling up a demon hunter so I can have a range class when I don't want to tank
I'm playing Barb and I just got to Act 2 Inferno. I haven't bothered rerolling or trying an alt because...
1. I don't have much interest in rolling an alt atm, even though playing a melee like a barb and being forced into using specific skills isn't fun.
2. I'm a little stubborn about seeing how far I'm able to go before I just decide on rushing past mobs on the way to bosses. All bosses seem easier than most elite packs across the board, except for Izual and Diablo sometimes.
3. I haven't had all the time in the world to play the past two weeks. I find myself helping friends or dumping tons of gear on people instead of focusing on farming or making alts. Plus ever since yesterday night I've been thinking about going back to Dota 2 until a major patch hits. I've missed two new hero ports since D3's release!!!

Some people tell me I'm going to hell. I just let them know that I've already packed my bags!
Tell your boyfriend to give monk a try at level 60 and gear him up. Would be a waste of time if he just put the monk on the side just because they or nerfed. My friend has a monk and is half way done with act II.
I see that some of the WoW FotM people have come to D3. I play the class I want to play, I don't reroll to whatever the current 'OP' class is so I can always be 'great'. I don't have that kind of insecurity.
The FA nerf hit me pretty hard as a wizzy, but I also re-geared and re-skilled and Im doing fine. Tell him to stop whining and keep playing his monk... There are a lot of us, in every class having trouble in inferno right now. Hes not the only one.
I actually started a WD at release and played him until 50... rerolled to Barb this weekend (just finished NM) and love it so far. I guess you should simply play the class you have the most fun with. Unfortunately there was no option "played ranged and rerolled to melee" in the poll

I personally didn't even notice the nerfs. Made no difference to me. YMMV.
