If they get all the runes figured out and the other items on their list, they could easily release before 3/31, if you think about it.
The thing is, they've been busy with runes for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time! I'm kinda flabbergast if they are still busy with it...they've been goin at it the unattuned ones from at least Sep, but well before that with the whole system.
They are most likely 95% done with it and are testing/polishing atm. Or 100% done and are just busy with the RMA stuff or vica versa or even done with both and are waiting for the right time to give us a release. I can't see them still heavily busy with the runes atm, it's a more straightforward system than the RMAH.
We still got a few weeks till it will start becoming unlikely for a Q1 release. They have stated that they want to announce the date two months before actual release. In my opnion, there is also a two week, plus or minus, window. So I would say after Mid-Feb if we don't hear a release date, then it wont be a Q1 release.

True Drkclone. As far as Q1 2012, we still have 66% of the way to go through (since it's the end of january) And they very well *could* announce the date in mid february and have it out by march =D
But, didn't bashiok say something like they only actually said / meant 'early' 2012, not Q1?

he said he just didnt want to be specific and give the wrong impression. and in another post he said he didnt want to say anything just to get yelled at if they dont happen to make it. id say february 9th will be when we find out if its coming out by march or not
but the way diablo is, the shops are ready, the player base is ready...the could announce it and have game in shops within 3 weeks easy

some guy posted this on the first page of this thread. lolz. i still dont think it means anything and with all the stability issues with D3 i expect the release date announcement a 3-5 weeks tops before release

Nope. No chance in hell. I canceled my pre-order in December because Im confident there will be another delay pushing it into a summer release.
I wouldnt expect them to announce a release date at the coming investors meeting. Just doesnt seem like a place to announce a release date to me. I bet they'll just also repeat the statement that they're trying for Q1 or maybe even just say early 2012, to reassure the investors a bit. It will all be in the wording to me. If they say Q1, they are still not sure but hopeful. If they say early, there will almost certainly be another small delay.
Just to clarify, Blizzard said "early 2012", not "Q1 2012".
exactly, which -could- include April, which in that case I think they -could- make what they said.
Early, mid , late
1-4, 5-8, 9-12
I think they could make an argument that a release at any point in the first half of 2012 was "early". Most people probably wouldn't consider June to be "early" in the year, but one could always argue that 1-6 = early and 7-12 = late. (Though, I would be shocked if it was released that late).

My guess is that the unattuned system they were talking about around Blizzcon won't be exactly what they end up using. I suspect that playing around with that system gave them the idea that they will end up using in the final game. And I agree that they are probably all but finished with it at this point. It should be complete by the time they announce the details, and they've said we should be hearing about it in the next couple of weeks.
guys i reckon that we will have a release date b4 news on the runes
rune news will prob will follow later that day, and i doubt runes will hit the beta b4 that day
This would surprise me. I don't think we'll get a release date while they are still working on the game. I would expect that once they are "feature complete" for launch then they would announce a date and freeze development work except for any additional bugfixes that might pop up between then and release.

The 2-month announcement timeframe is just what they try to shoot for. Looking back at previous Blizzard launches, I think they've done a few as close as 4 weeks out from the actual date. They probably prefer to announce 8 weeks ahead, but they should be able to squeeze things out in as little as 4 weeks (pressing discs, printing manuals, shipping to retailers, etc) if they need to. I wouldn't say that a Q1 release is impossible until March hits if we haven't gotten an announcement before then.

considering they've already cut like 4 things to quote "get to a solid release date" i wouldnt say no chance in hell. its sounding very much like they are going to announce a release next month. february 9th they will say "still early 2012" and then a few weeks later they will announce it.

I would agree that most companies would want a ~ 2 month, or 8 week window. But consider that all these changes after the delay can be put into a patch, and if they were shooting for the end of 2011, they most likely have all the CD's printed up and boxes packed. There was also that info about warehouses getting reserved space for the pallets of D3.
IMO, they are super close to finishing the rune system, they already have everything printed boxed and packed, and we could potentially see a release date announcement followed by release 2-3 weeks later =D
I'm anticipating a release annoucement in the next two weeks, landing the game in late March or early April. Really not quite sure, but I'm sticking with March so they can try to make their "early 2012" anticipated release, even though I would still consider April early 2012.
I'm still waiting for the conference call. If we don't hear something before that happens then I'm guessing we will get a "minor" delay. So stay tuned for the next 2 weeks, if they're on track we should definitely hear something.
It may not mean a definite delay if they don't announce something before the call, but the chances are extremely slim of it releasing in March if we don't.
Very, very doubtful at this point. But for my own sanity's sake, I sure hope it's shortly thereafter, because It's getting harder and harder to find suitable time sinks while waiting for this damn game.
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Mass Effect 3
I Am Alive
Prototype 2
The Secret World (There is not set release only April 2012)
Max Payne 3
After Max Payne 3, which comes out in may, the next game I want in 2012 is Resident Evil 6 in late November. Now there are a ton of TBA 2012 games, but I am only going on ones that have relatively solid release dates. So I'm hoping Diablo 3 comes out between now and June/July at the latest. These are only hopes though.

Yeah they might be nearly done with it or are done with it but want to give us the juicy news between the announcement and release.
And there won't be runes in beta.
Edit: This poll is surprisingly close! We have some both optimists&pessimists here on DFans.

Pretty sure WoW was released like 19 days after it's release date announcement =D Game set match

With there being no Blizzcon this year, I am curious as to whether or not Blizzard will make any sort of appearance at PAX or E3.

I'd bet on a May/June release date. I sincerely doubt they can manage a March/April release date.
