No doubt that the most popular thing right now in D2 is PvP, and no doubt that people are going to want to duel in Diablo 3 with new skills, new strategies, and new characters. So I was wondering, if anyone would know, what the current stance Blizzard has on PvP on Diablo 3. I tried to look for some stuff on the Official Diablo 3 Forums, here, and Diablo3.com.
This is just what I would WANT to have:
- Multiple Environments that are made specifically for dueling, besides the main world. Perhaps a building you can go to called the "Arena", or maybe just a seperate map. But I would like it to be just a huge circle with a ring around it with healers and pot sellers.
- A Score Keeper that would let you check how many kills you have, deaths, who you've killed, your kill %, etc. Maybe a place in the corner or something.
- Specific PvP Games that will allow PvP accounts to look for just PvP games instead of having to search the entire damn network. Also I would like to have Custom Rules to the games, so people could be able to make their own rules, like no NKing, no Gold Jack, no EXP leech (when someone kills you, you can leech a % of their exp), Resist drop, teams, etc.
- A Higher Number of People able to join the game and participate in the duels. Maybe perhaps 10 or 12 because then you would be able to have greater teams or have crazy kill frenzies that, I believe, would be very exciting.
So perhaps I'm on crack, but I still have not found anything about PvP, so can you post what will actually happen. Also please comment on my perfect PvP idea.
I actually have statistical fundamental doubts with your universal statements in your first paragraph, but I agree with your ideas. For PvP, or any game type, for that matter, it's always a fucking pain scrolling through page after page of games that you don't care about. Sorting needs to be implemented. And, of course, tickable rules at game creation would be awesome; you don't have to spew them all out every time someone joins the game, then. That can be very annoying.

And ^ makes sense Tournaments would actually be possible, then.

Probably the race to 99 is up again because of the new patch. But right before I quit (which was about 2 months ago) the most popular thing was easily PvP.
Also thanks. I hate scrolling through all that random nonsense that I really don't care about (like you said).

Well, if you're talking only Diablo II, then I would say you should take a look at all the Chaos/Baal/MF/Trist games. Those are all PvM. As far as I can see, there's vastly more of them than there are PvP games, at least online (I guess it could be different if you're talking about LAN- are you into LAN parties with Diablo II?), with the exception of MF, they're almost always packed, and Blizzard did a poll at the last BlizzCon to see what people were most interested in for Diablo III: the overwhelming winner was lore, if I remember correctly. PvP was a major minority.
Not to say I don't support people enjoying PvP or a better system for it in Diablo III, but I really don't like people flaunting around PvP as the end-all be-all for Diablo when, from what I've seen for years, that is simply not the case.
[/hr]
Or at least that's how I see it. Maybe I'm just missing something critical here. Maybe all of them are just in passworded games. In that case, though, I'd say it's impossible for anyone to say either is more popular than the other, since PvP then could not be measured and it could be a very large or very small part of overall activity.
Oh damn. So I stand corrected. But still, why would people level up so fast? No one has the real patience to go passed 96, so I would say everyone is trying to get a build in since people usually can't afford ULs. And Lore won? Maybe I just played the game over and over too many times. I usually skip all the talks except get chills when Duriel does his "Looking for Baal..." when you enter his lair.
- Multiple Environments Agreed with the overall idea. A specific place for dueling, were each player starts at each corner are excential. When you die you're respawned at the entrace and if you leave the arena in the mid of a fight you loose. I don't see the need of a healer, they cna just add a huge HP regenration bonus in the outside area and pots in pvp are lame.
- A Score Keeper I don't like this idea. If score will be recorded people will just exploit it with their friends to farm score points. Because of that they will have to add a match making system and i hate match making.
I think they should add support for fan leagues and championships. And in this support score and rank are saved. Imo they should let the players decide how to organize pvp, because players have much more power of adaptation.
- Specific PvP Game Sure. We should be able to tag our rooms with stuff like (PvE - Quest, PvE - Farm, PvP - 1x1, PvP -2x2, Trading).
- A Higher Number of People Yeah, i agree that 1x1 and 2x2 sux. I wish we could even play insane pvps like 10x10.

HP regeneration would be cool. But you would need pot sellers for mana pots. And respawn points would be up to the person who made the game. He can make it so you have to get your body or you just respawn with your body.

Ummm... No... You wouldn't have to have matchmaking things. It's just a place with all of your statistics. Like Winning %, deaths, kills, etc. And then you can have the big Hall of Duelers, with the best duel stats and stuff. Then you can have the Local Stats within just a current game.

Again, it would be all up to the person who made the game. The game maker would have the ability to make the game to every last detail, which, I believe, would be very fun and unique.
Honestly it is obnoxiously hard to pinpoint what is most popular in Diablo, I came in here thinking the same PvP>PvM easily, but people here have been somewhat headstrong and pour their faith into PvM>PvP and some actually bring valid points to the table, in the end result there is no way to deciefer what gameplay makes most of Diablo.
Can't take in account the Blizzcon survey as it was 20kish people and obviously not everyone there was a Diablo fan as there were majority of WoW fans there as I saw and SC2 fans.
Can't take in account the games played on Diablo since most people are in deed leveling up but for what is an issue to find out as a strong case can be made for either MF or PvP.
So in the end it is pointless to argue over it and just hope that Blizzard acknowledges both parties and let's us both win in 1 way or another.

Lmao... Did you even read my entire post? Or just the first sentence?
What if there were "battlegrounds" so to speak. Please please please don't hang me for suggesting something from WoW, but I think some 4v4 TDM, Territory Control, etc. could bring about some really interesting exposure for PvP in D3. We could even see it on competitive levels and leagues. Just don't make it more than 4v4.
You've got to admit, WoW has one of the most, if not the most fleshed out and perfectly executed PvP systems in any RPG. Not saying that class balance perfect, but that's to be expected with any game.
Certainly not giving a shit about what he said though, right?
Are you saying that I don't give a shit? If you're going to post just to attack me, please get out of my thread.

I like that idea. Having different types of PvP. That would, like you said, would be something new and unique to the world of Diablo.
Guild Wars-esque arenas would be pretty cool, especially if the PvP had objectives instead of just pure Deathmatch. 2v2 or 4v4 combat would be interesting. Definitely not something I'd do more than PvM, but an interesting distraction.
Lmao... Did you even read my entire post? Or just the first sentence?
Um...my post was in regards to what Seth was saying as well as a few things you pointed out. I have been in pretty much every PvP VS PvM debate on these forums and am highly pro PvP so if you somehow got from my post that I am saying you are a moron well..take what you want from it.
I speak mostly for the elite players of Diablo and share their experience and at elite level play I guess we don't have some of the issues the normal player gets, so those surveys at Blizzcon and what the Diablo devs say makes up Diablo's fanbase is a little different from what I have experienced since day 1 of Diablo but maybe you just don't get that.
Either way no point in arguing since like I said each gameplay has a claim to rule Diablo and let's just hope they make everyone win.
On topic:
I want options mid game, not just for the creator to make, but to change alliances mid game, to have the ability to do 1v7, ect.
I want no potions and if it has to be where I can't hunt people down in a game then I want them in a cage where they can't run.
I also want there to be no safe zone, and if there is one then it only lasts for a short time so kids don't just town hug and attack and hide and smack talk in the safe zone.

I really like the idea of battlegrounds, like a coliseum-type area, for just dueling. I always thought D2 lacked that.
Also, not to be but your sig is pure awesome. Banana phone FTW

I like the whole idea !! I think it's obvious to see that in-game, just because it's ergonomic.
But for the score, I like it but if good score bring some rewards, I think like italofoca, players will abuse of it. Like making a "false" character to constantly die to boost friend's scores !!

I think that the "matchmaking" system would be something like WoW where you can't choose who you get matched against, but you get matched against a team of a similar "rating".
The score recording could work.. It could be like only 1 fight per enemy is recorded per week so you have to find different players to compete against. "Rematch next week motherfucker!" has a nice ring to it =D
There could also be three sets of kill/death etc stats:
1. Against people with 50% or more Kill/death rate
2. Against people with less than 50% kill/death rate
3. General against people with higher % than you.
That way people couldn't exploit making a dummy account just to horde stats.
