Why show stats that you cannot adjust ? I mean really... fill that space up with more rune slots.. that'd be sweet.
What does me knowing I have a Strength of 48 do, if I cannot do anything to with it ? (Besides the obvious items) All you use that # for is to hover it to see what you really wanted to see anyways right?
Wouldn't it be better to remove the statistical data in the game, and instead use what they are there for.. modifiers ?
+HP
Dodge %
Melee Crit %
etc..
I'd rather not have to hover over some retarded stat that doesn't mean anything to figure out what I really wanted to see (the modifiers).
Not to narc on wow, but wow is the only other game I know of... where stats are automatic.. and then still shown to the user. As if that serves of any kind of purpose whatsoever.
Remove stats from the game entirely if they are non-configurable,
If stats were honestly beneficial than the superficial (eye candy)... like uhm what is going on with gold .. then just maybe it would end up balancing itself out. Why would people dump all VIT, if STR actually made up 70% of their melee damage ? Substitute INT for STR... same thing.
Stats should either be completely removed and show us what you really wanted to show us.. the modifiers... OR give stats a hefty role in the way your character performs so that it balances out. They are already offering respecs.. so there goes the noob factor if you misplaced stats. I don't believe stats should ever be a part of the armor you can wear anyways... so it seems like a fit to me ?
How does that matter? When your stats is purely a function of level, wouldn't a certain amount of stats equate to a certain level? So why then say "Str 100", when it could just aswell say "Level 10" (assuming you reach 100 Str at level 10)?
because a barb and a wiz will have different amounts of strength at level 10. This way they can have different types of gear for different classes without saying "requirement - barb level 10, wizard level 15, WD level 18." it is easier just to put stat restrictions.

I have to agree with OP here. Without any way to affect them, stats have no significance. Rage of Mages did without them just fine simply by affecting secondary stats. A "+4" STR can be replaced with other things very easily, so can attribute restrictions...
Would be cool if you could add runes and change the formula of what the stat normally effects. So like... DMG= (1.5 * [4 * STR])/2 and like with some type of rune it would be DMG= (1.5 * [6 * STR])/2) and then maybe other runes would change the other things that STR effects. So at least stats would be a little customizable. I don't know, just my thoughts.

Well, we had level requirements in Diablo II, they were just on items that were magic/unique/set/rare/crafted. White items you could wear no matter what level so long as you had enough required stat points.

No because those modifiers are applied to stats. Some stats can have more modifiers applied to them. BOOM x2
I'd have to completely disagree here. You could very well just remove STR, and replace all items that had STR and tiers.. with subsequent modifiers they would have given instead. You could have actually gotten something even better.. something from STR.. something from VIT... etc etc your combo your pick.
They serve ABSOLUTELY 0 purpose in the game.
Like I said earlier... if stats played a crucial role in your characters development... IE: dex barbs over str barbs.. for crit vs. raw damage.. you would see a TON more customized characters.. without game breaking mechanics like Sorc + maul..
No need to put level requirements on items instead of 'stats' to fix bad mechanics. Not saying I don't like it... I think it is a better alternative in every fashion, everyone is going to level up.. and its nice knowing what you can wear without 'calcing' how many levels you need to get to wear it.
But really guys try to see exactly what I'm talking about. You don't want an item with +STR, you want that extra hp it givees, or the extra damage it does.. you don't necessarily want both. Freeing you to get an item that has the same amount of what would be +5STR / +5DEX, and just getting the melee damage increase modifier and crit modifier instead?
Or is it agility.. I haven't read a lot of the stats system cause I'm quite frankly apauled..
The stats are really just something to compare imo.
There isnt really anything fun about them. The only contribution they make to the game is a strong reason for specific classes to have reasons for more mana (or whatever) with worse items and visaversa. Also, its a reason for classes not to use items that are supposably too heavy or difficult to use for that specific character. This is only a narrow opinion in such examples ive found from diablo 1-2.
stats are simple representations of your characters attributes that come across as fullproof reasons for stuff.
Lets say STR 1-5 is the equivilant of 'the bear' and 1 STR is equal to +1hp +1damage
Instead of showing.. lol +1-5 STR, 'the bear' adds +hp +damage. Now upgrade the word... lets make it 'the grizzly' is 5-10 STR. It could be x2 +hp range, still 5-10 + damage range. Get where I'm going with this ?
Comparative results? Dumping gear for different gear.. isn't that what people are already doing in wow, and what you did in D1/2 anyways? Seriously... how many times did you check out the kid for Kings Bastard Sword of Speed ?....
Make me laugh, you don't need to see your stats in wow.. it is utterly useless, they already have another bar for the important stuff already.
Dodge:
Damage:
Crit %:
etc...
There is no point at all in showing the actual 'stat' because its worthless anyways. Anyone that's honestly played wow knows that + modifiers were always better than the stat alternative to begin with.
Here are just a ton more reasons why they shouldn't remove adjustable stats.....
They are making gear, just like in WoW, completely overpowered compared to stat allocation. (Which they are removing....)
Once again, why take an aspect out of a game which adds to the overall; difficulty, replayibility, and strategy? Oh yeah, because they don't want to allow any sort of intelligent advantage to people who actually know what they are doing..... Thank you Blizzard......
This is the main reason I started playing Guild Wars and could never play WoW. PvP in WoW is almost purely based on gear, while in GW it has almost nothing to do with gear and is purely based on strategy and teamwork.
Maybe GW2 will be my next purchase instead of the WoW child that is D3.

stats will be in diablo 3 for the same reason they are in world of warcraft; so you can see how your gear is affecting your stats.
being able to see your stats will prove as a benchmark to compare gains and losses, and the way the game is itemized and played, one stat affects many things, so seeing your core stats will help you judge your next move.
Sigh, stats are still important because ITEMS will affect stats as they will have stat modifiers on then such as +10 STR or +15 DEX etc.
You can still affect your stats through items, just not from leveling up anymore so you can't break your character.
They've already introduced respecing. Thus, the entire noob factor is gone from character mishaps.
Why show 'us' the user statistics, when they are not only unconfigurable, but wield no significant role in the game. They bear no merit on what you can do, they only give you 'modifiers' based on amount and class, do you guys understand that?
The 'stat' is just a single way to display multiple modifiers, in a single context. Just remove that, and show us the real crap. Why need to hover over stats to see what you wanted to know anyways.
And for the lot of you, I don't really give a crap about D2 stats, they were just a means to wear gear, and keep you alive. That is not what I'm talking about. I don't want items to use stats. Nor do I want to be forced to wear a certain item to get a certain stat.
I'd rather see stats that make sense.. I'm open to suggestions, but as it is... just doesn't make any sense at all. If items are supposed to make your character, why even have base stats to begin with honestly. The only reason that they are non-configurable now, is for the simple fact that with items not using stats as the basis to wear them, you can make overpowered builds, which is exactly why if they made stats 'worth while' you could be allowed to configure them, you could 'respec' your char as they have already stated.
Items would be could be simplier, if stats had more weight.
You wouldn't have players with 50k hp, and 25k damage.. its either one, or the other. Players that want to survive, will find themselves balancing their stats. Players that group may have builds that are more left/right than solo'rs, etc.
I think auto-stat distribution is awesome. i hate realizing hours down the line that for optimal performance, i should have spent points in a different stat. GO AUTO-STAT, WOO! As far as their significance, i would like to know them even though we can't control them b/c if you like to play around with the math, you can see what exactly stat modifiers do for you and what to get next, etc.

Oh, I didn't know that. Happen to have a source?
Edit~
Ah, yeah, now that I think of it, I think I do remember reading something like that.
*shrug*
Dunno what they plan on doing with stats.
(And thanks :P)

IE:
If as it is now.. Barb 10 = 10 str
and 10 str = +10hp +10damage
Your screen would show, base:
HP + 10 <-- base since HP also increases individually as you level
10 damage + other base modifiers.
It would be the same, except you visually see the modifiers you are getting instead of the actual stat, based on class.
They are making gear, just like in WoW, completely overpowered compared to stat allocation. (Which they are removing....)
