K. First: This is kind of a topic in another thread. So delete it if you're angry!
Second: I want this thread to be mostly about the spacebar as a hotkey.
Third: We have established that "H" and "M" are bad hotkeys for health and mana already, and that most cannot reach it comfortably (mentally).
FOURTH!: The spacebar is a great idea for a health AND a mana potion hotkey! It's so simple and user-smiley that I think I should tell Blizzard about it. Unless you guys find some reason as to why that'sa bad idea?
Well its kidna useless if we have cooldowns in potions.. you won't use it very much.. besides if it is for both health and mana I guess it won't work, at least I want to choose which potion to drink.
I don't think I quite understand how it would work, though. How could you have one hotkey for two separate and distinct kinds of potions?
Well like a normal hotkey for health, your person drinks whenever you hit it. It's the same with the spacebar, and he'll drink both at once. I don't think they will set cooldowns to drinking potions, because this game is supposed to be harder than D/D2.
Actually, I came up with a reason myself... I don't always want to waste drinking 3 points of mana and 45 points of health, because I could SAVE those 3 points from my mana pots by just waiting a couple of seconds for regen

The developers have said already that there will be less potion drinking.. We have health and mana globes(with wizard skills iirc) that the monsters drop and which we will have to grab from the ground to heal us.
All the characters also have more advanced skills for defending our skin. Barbarian has stomps that stun the enemy preventing them from damaging us, wizard has slow time that slows missiles in the area so we are able to dodge them easily.
All these things points to less potions (like in D2). The developers have also said many times that they didn't like the way you could survive almost anything in D2 by having enough potions. So most likely the potions are rare and expensive at vendor and maybe also with a short cooldown. They should be just for emergency situations.
Like bosses. You aren't going to see health globes dropping from a boss that isn't dying, and I bet some monster have some "resist time spell" skill that makes it difficult for Wizards.

The developers already explained this a bit.. The boss could drop a globe ever 25% of health he loses or if the bosses spawn some monsters that you need to kill.. they would drop the globes.
And, if I remember right, globes of health are shared with your teammates. I like the idea of not having to rely on them.
It's for the best that we don't need many hotkey presses for things like that. I was never into potions in the first place. (That included using them in WoW) D:

As far as the Spacebar idea, in my opinion its an horrible one. The potions here will be valuable, rarer and you won't be using them nearly as much as in D2 (some people still don't know that, apparently).
That said, why would you want potions on the most obvious place in the keyboard? Its actually more annoying than anything, considering I'll have one hand on the keyboard constantly for my skills and such, and the BIG ASS BAR thats always in the way is there for emergency? Thats a bad idea to me. But of course I'm saying that, but I know it'll be fully customizable.
But I have no idea why you insist on the "space bar". The idea of having both health and mana potions on one bar, THAT is your idea. And its not an amazing one if you ask me, again, considering how potions work in D3.. not that it would hurt to have it. But I just don't see the point.
Also, having, say, H for health and J for mana isn't so bad, since if they are there for emergency situation then yes you need to move your hand a little to reach them, which is the whole point.

You don't like something you may need a lot to be right in front of you?
^ That would be argument if potions were needed more than globes:

I got used to potions after many hours of Dungeon Siege, and then when I hit up Diablo 2, I was so angry at how hard it was to stock, drink, and restock potions!
Perhaps you are right. Killing things for health is much funner anyways!
So far it seems like D3 will be more of an action rpg than D2, which is a great thing. The more things we have in the game to promote constant action and fighting, the better.
Potions do that in their own way, too, but they are a cheap tactic when used in large quantities.
