This thread is mainly talking about the transportation in Diablo 3, which I think was one of the biggest factors in both Diablo 1 and 2.
In Diablo 1: Due to the small place we were in, the only necessary ways of transportation was town portals and shortcuts (big crack of of lava, remember?). Wasn't that big of a deal.
In Diablo 2: The world got a lot bigger, so they thought of two ways of transportation. First one was a temporary one that just got you from any stop back to nearest town, known as town portals. The second one was a permament way of transportation, which would put a place where you instantly teleport to a given area infinite amount of times, known as way points.
In Diablo 3: The world increases even more in this game. Now it seems that most of the world is yours to explore. So what to do to move around??? One: Keep town portals, as they are needed for moving fast around the place. Two: Put either shortcuts or waypoints back in, as they were a life saver in Diablo 2. Three: Find ways to move faster in general, like moving in caravans or just having faster running abilities or something.
What do you guys think and what do you guys propose?
You make a good point, i remember hearing something about checkpoints for when you die so you dont have to run back to get your gear, but maybe you could get a horse or something to make things quicker, but that would also be a pain in the backside for combat, id like to see way points stay they help alot when you resumed playing from the day before so you dont have to run through the whole world again.

D3 world will be not that big.
In some interview after the Blizzcon, some dev said that they initial intention was make a huge world were you could travel tehre freely like Oblivion, Baldur's Gate and WoW. But they give up os this idea and decided to make a very linear game like D1 and D2.
So this kind of issue is much more easier to deal in a linear world then in a open world. Check points and way points are problably enough transportation.
Horses would be interesting to see, but horseback riding would be rather stupid in a Diablo game. To reply to what Dub said, horses are part of the Diablo universe. You just don't see our hero riding them at all.
All very good ideas, the way point system I believe is a very good means of getting from place to place. I have read some of the interviews with the developers, and it seems like the world is going to be a lot more open-ended, therefore forming and randomizing with each game you go in according to developers (but on a much larger scale than just a dungeon). Therefore, if you have to go between point A and point B, you are going to need a means of travel other than way points if the landscape shifts. Maybe a horse or a mount, or maybe short-cuts like earlier suggested. I think that mini-towns or outposts between point A and B would make the trip feel shorter, and you could restock while on route to whatever quest or task you are on. Feedback?:P
I was also thinking along the same lines. But for a small town to truly work it would require a way point in it, so that when you use a town portal, then the "it goes to the one that's closer" problem is solved.
Hmm, imagine it, firing arrows at some guys in the distance, then this guy comes up from behind and you pull your sword out and chop the guy's head off and ram an arrow into the demon horse...or something...
Idk, horse combat never has been really reached what I think it could be in video games...
(Hmm...the Witch Doctor throwing a fire thing on his horse to make anyone around him take damage... Neat...)
1. D3 is about the same size as D2
2. There are waypoints and checkpoints
3. Using town portals at whim is out, so no need to discuss whether they should or shouldn't be brought back. They're out.
DIII world was announced to be as big as the DII world, so I doubt there'll be much changes regarding transportation. I see no use for horses, you don't need to go god knows where...
My guess is that waypoints will only be used to to go from town to town. All the other waypoints that you had in the dungeons and other areas in D2 will now be checkpoints in D3. Town Portals will be of limited use and quite possibly on a kind of timer like hearthstones are in WoW. There will most likely be transportation between Acts like in D2, cause you obviously dont get the waypoint first. This is all the transportation will be imo.
The only form of transport I'm interested in is horseback riding. I think it would be sweet if you could purchase a VERY costly horse and equip it with horse armor. By the end, you're fully upgraded horse would have the appearance of a fully armored horse from hell (or heaven, for that matter!).

I made a few posts years ago about that.
It makes no sense to me that there are no horse's in the Diablo series.
A dungeon raiding battle mule. I have already stated this, but Blizzard claims it is too provocative.
You know, each class gets another tab of horseback skills and whatnot.
Idk, just sounds neat...

Texas Ranger + Horse named "Chocolate" = Diablo?
You're just spinning this in a way to fit your argument. Maybe you don't have to name the horses. Texas Ranger? Please...
