Um....your barbarian will look like that once you pick up armor and such. Or are you referring to the type of artwork used for creating the character in-game?

Oh. Maybe the OP was confused thinking that his browser is actually the game window while he was taking that in-game screenshot to show us how it really is. The only thing I can think of here, is that in the flash animation the model looks unshaded and less contrasted/saturated. Which is natural since it is not a model in the game environment with true light sources.
Either that, or he is comparing the appearance of an endgame armour set with the one that will probably appear in the character selection screen.
Actually they are already trying to imitate the artwork way too much IMO.
If you'd ask me, the exaggerated pauldrons and girdle are because they're trying to make it look like artwork.
(Remember its just an opinion.)
And without high graph system, you just cant make it look like artwork.
Think of the barb in D2 looking like (trying to look like ) this: http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc101/eldiablo1992/barbarian.jpg
Thats my take on it.
And its an opinion/theory.
Could be wrong.
That's actually an excellent characterization.

I dont care about the quality of the graphics, I care about the essence of the Diablo franchise. The game is supposed to be gorey and dark, not bright and cartoonish like WoW. I think they messed up the graphic style, which Thasador said. The top picture just has that gloomy darkness about it, while the bottom one is just a buff guy standing under appearently very bright moonlight?

Ooohhhh the character selection screen is not nearly 'gorey' enough!
Yes, of course it's bright, it's a fucking unshaded model! It's not like it's a sample of in-game lighting? And what do you mean - very bright moonlight = WoW?
Take your sensationalistic nonsense elsewhere please...
so you want the game to look like artwork?> like we have seen in some anime games?
Notice the skin tones very different too eh?
Wow looked looked too "light", so does this. By light, I mean like when you're colouring with pencil crayons and you don't press hard enough.

What's the argument here, that you want the barbarian to always look like he is wearing that set from the concept piece?
If you want it to look like artwork they are going to have too raise the req quite a bit
