Or do you feel like they are health for the system, they try out stuff and tell us whats the best so we can model it and do it the simplest and easiest way possible.Your own opinion of elitist can be your vote.
I have a mate who is an elitist and it is just so annoying because he thinks he knows everything when it comes to games, if you dont go a certain build that he always uses then you're doing it wrong. They hinder the game. In games such as WoW they do help though.

"Hey, I thought you'd like the witty irony of grub-on-glowie violence!"
I disagree that theorists and number-crunchers are inherently elitists. But even talking about people like Athene, I think they make the game more entertaining, personally.

...and if you disagree with me, you're probably <insert random ad hominem attack here>.
Fixed it just for you. It was just a though, didn't really think grammar meant all that much on the internet. I'll know better next time. Let's stay on topic.
Zealot I to am caught in the middle of this I don't quite know that's why I'm asking. I'm very casual, just like collecting items! Friend of mine VERY hardcore and will yell at please if he dies. So figured I'd ask the community
People who put so much into the game and believe thier personal personas matter in game. Or believe they are "Gaming celebrities". People with spread sheets and theory craft or believe they are on a "different level " then other gamers?

Did you really just say you didn't think grammar meant all that much on a medium where people communicate with writing most of the time? : )
As for on topic...
Elitism, as you've defined it, minus the asshattery (an entirely different aspect), balances... Being so passionate about something, that you want to learn everything there is about it, and pass that knowledge on is a good thing... Both to those that like having the work done for them, and those that like to join in on the fun.
It's ok to be elite, skilled, passionate, etc... It's ok to expect people you play with (regularly) to also perform well, and if not understand the research, respect it, use it, benefit from it...
It's also ok to be non-elite, and just play what you think is fun... You can bring more to a team than just numbers : )
Now... people being dicks, whether it's because they know more than you, or just blindly follow sites like ej, are just that... dicks : )
There's a difference between an elitist and a number cruncher. I want to have the best gear for my heroes and beat inferno on all 5, yet I don't feel like am elitist. I play casually and don't need to be the first person.
I was an elitist when I played Everquest but when I started playing WoW and Starcraft I took a different approach. I just tried to be good but casual and it has made my gaming experience more fun and less stressful.
As to the question, no I don't think they ruin games, more like parties and sometimes forum discussions. It's all about attitude not skill when it comes to these people.

Depends on the game, some games, especially e-sport ones it is acceptable to a certain degree. eg. yeah they may not be nice, but your probably going to learn from them.
On the other hand you have console or PC elitists etc, they drive me up the wall thinking they are the best.
Elitists hinder games because of their personalities. They are often entitled and immature. They "know" they are always right.
Some people probably think an elitist is someone who is good at the game. Not necessarily. Elitists can be good or bad, they are just people who believe they are better than everyone else.

Just curious. Help, hinder, or even out.
Third option added for fairness.

It's not just grammar. My friend mr. logic has left this topic a long time ago. He's still wondering wtf personal personas is.

Everyone one.....
I read what you typed aloud, and got tongue-tied. I encourage everyone to give it a go!

That how much attention I can pay while alt-tabbing between the forums and an active 5v5 in League.... Sorry
