Ok so now that we're a month away from the sweet nectar that is Diablo 3 i thought i would issue myself a personal challenge. I've gotten slightly out of shape and decided since I'm gonna be gaming even more when this comes out I'd go extreme (for myself anyway). I'm gonna be running 5 miles everyday (unless it rains or snows) to get myself in better shape. I've already ran 2 miles today and was wondering if anyone else would like to take up this challenge with me. Best of luck to those that do (i know I'll need it) and hopefully I'm not alone in this (my rl friends are lazy lol).
Edit: Wow awesome glad to see some other people are interested and will do this with me. Just wanted to throw a few things out there if you don't wanna run turn it into weight lifting. This was my personal challenge and create whatever will work for you, this is just a way for me to push myself. As for the rest i usually do that when i workout and i use to be in really good shape (getting older and kids will getcha out of shape though) so if i feel i need a rest I'll take it.
Also wanted to say i got my 5 miles today but not all at once did 3 than 2 tonight. Thnx again for the replies and good luck to anyone in their own challenge, if anyone wants to post it and see how they do ill put in on the first post with the challenge and results so everyone can see.

You need some rest days in there bro. Especially if you're not used to that kind of mileage. Count me in for 4 days a week tho =) I just did 5mi at the lake yesterday and it was rough. My new personal trainer is making muscles I didn't know I had sore
I'm down! Trying to get into shape anyway for the Military and my real life friends are lazy too. Never knew i could run five miles until last week! So i think i could do this!
Iniquity,
No days off are completely necessary..maybe at first but with a glutamine supplement and healthy amount of protein and sleep working out everyday can be healthy. At least thats what my kinesiology contact tells me..and from personal experience
You do need some rest in between or you wont make it very far.
I run 3 times a week, mon, wed, friday doing 9 miles in 1hour 10mins always trying to improve it.
Tue,thur, sat is core and weight training aprox 1 hour of workout 10x4 reps.
Most important thing is that you make some kind of plan and stick too it. If you for some reason dont have that much time to run in your daily routine you can try the 8min workout, basically you run at your maximum speed for 2mins then walk 1min then 2mins sprint 1min walk 2min sprint and stop your workout is over. This only works if you run untill you almost puke and cant breathe at the end of it.
Just for fun try to do a coopers test and post your results.

"Then at long last, Azmodan shall reign as the Prime Evil!"
Running is too much daily impact for me and I also agree with the rest day thing. Kind of like the above poster, I do three days a week on cardio (though I cycle 23 miles in an hour instead of running 9) alternating that with three days a week on upper body strength, and on the seventh day rest.
A couple of things though:
1) if you haven't been doing any form of exercise, not so sure you should go from 0 to 35 miles a week. not so sure you will be able to.
2) if you do kick up the activity level (whatever amount), don't just stop May 15 -- keep going.
As for myself, around a year ago, I was in the worst shape of my life (60+ hour work weeks coupled-up with 20+ hour late night high-end raid guild weeks in WoW does not make for a healthy lifestyle). I quit WoW cold turkey back in May of last year and was 225 lbs at the time while standing only 5'9".
The first week I got on the treadmill, I did 2 miles in just under 30 minutes. That hurts to say as does the fact that, in complete honesty, it was only pride that got me to finish that 2nd mile in under the 30 minute mark. Inside my head I was having an identity crisis -- 20 years ago, I used to be the guy that could run sub-5 minute miles, ride centuries (100 miles in a day) on the bike, bench 315 lbs -- and there I was struggling to finish 2 miles in under 30 minutes. As I look at my Excel spreadsheet (where I track weight progress, mileage, etc.) that was almost exactly a year ago (4/21/11).
For me, that day was it -- couldn't be denied anymore -- I had to make the change. Fast forward to today, and my best mile running has greatly improved to sub-7 minute and, while I can't run multiple back-to-back miles at that pace, I can still get 6 miles and a cool down in under an hour workout. Not where it used to be but I'm 20 years older and I don't focus on running as much due to the impact and the fact I just like cycling more.
On the bike, 1 year ago, first time out, I was only able to complete 8.6 miles in 30 minutes. When I tried to pace it up and go longer a week later, I was only able to do 12.3 miles in 45 minutes before I fell off the stationary with an extreme calf cramp (another very humbling moment but I was committed at that point as well not to stay where I was). About 1 year later, I'm putting in just over 23 miles in a 1-hour session (improving each week).
As to the net of all this, instead of the 225 lbs I was at a year ago, today I was 173 pounds when I weighed myself. My waist went from 38 down to 32, my upper-body has a V-shape again and not an O shape I won't use the cliche "I'm in the best shape of my life" because I was really damn fit when I was 20 . . . but I'm close to getting there and, for a guy over 40, I'm doing pretty well. Most importantly, I feel a ton better today than I did a year ago.
Last thing I'd say is, when Diablo 3 comes out May 15th, the workout doesn't stop. I definitely encourage people that aren't exercising to get out there and start but don't make it a 1-month thing, make it a lifestyle change. 1 hour a day devoted to keeping yourself fit will make you feel a ton better the other 23 hours. Move more, eat less / eat better, profit.
I have found that for ME atleast, HIIT sessions help me achieve my goals with my limited amount of time, and I enjoy it more.
Other bigger guys - that are actually in shape - may want to look into HIIT as well. That is just a starting point guide, you will quickly learn what you can and cannot handle.
I work out 4 days a week, cause I got desk warming hours at work and I'm getting paid to be fit.
Tuesday: upper body, pushups, chin ups, pull ups, and abs
Wednesday: intervals, handles lower body and core
Thursday: Arms and shoulders, abs
Friday: Martial arts, light weight full body workout with legs
Sat: Gaming
Sun: Gaming
Mon: Gaming

"The Unchosen" Pain of Admirance Sigil (For those without -Feat of Strength-):
I used to run cross country until about at the end of my high schooling 2 years ago, I started getting shin splints really badly. The pain was so severe that I was forced to stop running for weeks at a time just to let them recover, and then once I felt they were better, I'd go out again and depending on the cushioning between my feet and the ground (shoes and surface hardness) they would come back either really quickly like after 1 running session, or gradually over a few weeks.
I joined the gym a year ago mainly because the treadmill is even softer to run on than grass, and that was working pretty well but then I also need to run sometimes in my every day life, such as to make the train on time, and then my shin splints come roaring back.
I seriously don't know why I'm getting them as I see people running on concrete every day, and I'm still young and fit. It's just getting to me... Something must be wrong with me....
I've stayed in shape despite gaming quite a bit. I workout daily and can't see myself giving it up anytime soon. I avoid pastas/breads as much as I can and I only snack on fruits/vegetables. Only drink water and the occasional fruit drink (i love apple juice).
It's very easy to be lazy but you gotta get out there. Even if it's 10 minutes of cardio it's better than nothing.
Wow awesome replies guys glad to see so many are interested in pushing themselves or challenging their bodies for a month with me will update main post.
Funny thing is I made a thread a while ago about the importance of physical fitness and the relation it has the empower your gaming experience at the same time on the official Diablo 3 forums.
I got called a troll and got flamed for like 7 pages.
I have no face to express my face.

School will keep me occupied just fine, it seems.

I lift Mon, Wed, Fri, Swim HIIT Tues Thurs and Longboard at night around 10pm on Sunday when my back streets are empty.
My goal for D3 release is to hit 182lbs and gain good increases on my Bench, Deadlift Squat and SMP,
Staying in good shape is vital to my Diablo enjoyment.
