People used to play (and still do) pure glass cannon style, so its viable. You just need to be REALLY careful. I'm comfortable saying that I don't have the concentration to play that style.
I'd say getting a moderate amount of AR so you at least survive some hits is good. Don't sacrifice too much of your dps though, otherwise it becomes actually harder to survive.
All resist (and armor, dont forget that) are quite helpful IMO. Its especially helpful vs. reflect dmg mobs, you wont 1shot yourself after your SS is gone. While it is possible to play pure glass cannon a3/4, its much more expensive, and I personally hate getting 1shot by white mobs.
Horde/extraHP/Relfect dmg mobs will make you never want to play again if you don't have any dmg mitigation.
^ Ok ^ he should be fine then, that's just like what, 150 million in gear?
Add to that the very real possibility of still being owned by Shielding/Reflect Dmg/Extra Health-teleporting mobs even with SS+Prep (and white mobs whenever you're careless), and I'd say pure glass cannon is not really the best build around for farming A3/4.
The good luck part of it is to get the drops that will sell for 150 mil?
Is AR a must for act 3/4 Inferno farming for a DH?
IMO, there are 3 major ways to play DH:
1. Glass Cannon - no AR, no Vit, no SP/Gloom. Rely on huge DPS and SS/Fog. This is a "poor man's choice" IMO (not to offend anybody, it's just the least gear-dependent option of all 3).
2. Tank - high AR, high Vit, high LoH, shield, maybe Nat's 4P bonus (however, I don't think it's required for a tank DH if you have enough CHC and Night Stalker).
3. Balance - it varies a lot, but the general idea is to have enough EHP to live through at least 1 hard hit or 2-3 medium hits to be able to Gloom-tank sometimes. You achieve that by either stacking Vit or AR or by getting a healthy mix of Vit items and AR items (which is probably the best way as gear with Vit and AR and Dex at the same time costs A LOT). Also, armor is a cheap alternative to AR.
All 3 options are perfectly viable in Inferno. Which one to select depends on your playstyle and how much money you have.

Option 1 might be the least gear dependent, but it sure is the most expensive one. Option 2/3 gear is pretty much comparable with Monk gear, (except for the specific resistance gear) which is dirt cheap.

Maybe what I wrote there was a bit misleading - by "balance" I don't mean those gear setups where you sacrifice a lot of DPS for survivability. For me "balance" is high DPS AND survivability. That surely costs a lot more than building a pure DPS char, i.e. glass cannon.

The problem at the moment is, almost every streamer has been playing a glass cannon Demon Hunter, so most people who don't know much about the game or just aren't very good at the game, will think that is the best build. Which is why the glass cannon gear is so incredibly expensive. Luckily that is slowly changing though, since more and more people are switching to a build where they can survive a lot better.

it's actually not that expensivem 50/60 million i'd say but to be honest.... i'm always in smoke screen when someone comes near me... and then just run back a bit fire a few hits and if you get dmg but don't die, get nether tentacles with over 150k dps they will heal you 2/3k per hit and with prep and 30% cooldown rune you might be able to activate it 3 times haha but that's just luck.
There is no way in hell that the build you described is 50/60 million. The xbow you descibed (1200 dmg, 100+ dex, crit dmg + socket) is twice that amount, alone.
If you can find me a cheap dead man's legacy with 100+ dex and 18+ IaS, I'll buy it.
If that build was 50/60 million, I think there would be a ton of DH's using it. I don't know anyone that wouldn't want 150k dps and 30k health.
Which is why the glass cannon gear is so incredibly expensive.
High Dex gear is expensive, but it's still way cheaper than items with high Dex, some Vit and some AR. And the same with high Dex + CHC + CHD gear - it's expensive, but it's nowhere near the high Dex + CHC + CHD + Vit / AR gear. That's what I meant there.

Ah ok, I myself don't really play that often on my DH, few act 2 runs once in a while, nothing more. Always thought glass cannon was more expensive, but I was wrong.

Sure the xbow with Crit damage is way to expensive, thats why i said, if you have the money but just a 1200dps 100 dex xbow is about 2/3 mil you just gotta play the auction house a bit and don't expect to get all that gear in a day.
I bought the dead mans i discribe for 1,2 mil. and a xbow 1231 dps 49% damage, 121 dex. 50 vit. for 1,5 mil. the andariels visage is the most expensive and a buyout will be atleast 2.5 mil. But you can get one for 1.5 mil if you bid on it and win.
How long ago did you buy them? I've sort of hit a wall on upgrades and can't find anything for under 20 million, now. Part of my problem might be that I like my current build and don't want to give up any of my stats. My current quiver only has 15% IaS, but I don't want to give up the 100+ dex, MF, and crit chance to get one with 18-20.
I play glass cannon as that's how I started and geared when I hit 60 in first week of d3. Tanky builds sacrificed too much dps (or cost too much back then). I kinda like it, and I got it practiced well enough to be feasible with it. No AR at all, only vit (40-50k hp, depending on MF) and some armor (51% reduction). I can survive 2-3 hits from almost all monsters in Act 3. I'm just a bit more careful when I'm around the rest.

The problem is, you described gear to do 150k DPS, then said it was okay to get a 1200 DPS, 100 dex xbow. The difference between the xbow in your original post and a 1200 dps, 100 dex xbow is over 50k with Sharpshooter.

I've had people tell me that you can out dps act 3/4 mobs w/o AR but I have trouble believing that? Can anyone offer any feedback on this topic?
I'd say getting a moderate amount of AR so you at least survive some hits is good. Don't sacrifice too much of your dps though, otherwise it becomes actually harder to survive.
Its a semi-tank build. I have high latency so I get hit quite a lot, hence the rather high AR.

This is not my most recent gear, but here it is.

I prefer to stand there and auto tank so i rolled a tank demon hunter.
Shift + spam grenades, the lazy way of playing.
83k hp
550 AR
22k dps
1830 LoH
I saw the thread and went "There's no AR in Diablo 3!"
Then i later picked up it meant all resist :/
