Sixen posted a message on We're Off to See the BetaEarlier today I received an invitation to go to Blizzard HQ, at the end of July (27th to be exact), for a world first look at the Diablo 3 Beta (which means Beta won't be out before this event), as well as some new feature reveals, including information on Battle.net 2.0. In addition to these reveals and hands on play, we'll be able to sit in a fansite interview with a few developers, so if anyone has any questions, feel free to let me know in this post and I'll ask what I can! The event itself will be under NDA until August 1st, but I'll keep you all in the loop.Posted in: News & Announcements
Now for some speculation... Keep in mind, there is still no release date, this could potentially be pretty big. As we know, they are shooting for the Beta to be released in Q3 and they want to have all system and game information revealed prior to that happening. With this event coming up, we will then be able to spill all the beans about the Beta, which could mean it could very well start very shortly after this event. Not only that, but depending on how long the Beta lasts, could mean that we may still potentially have a 2011 release date.
tl;dr Sign of the Beta.
It also looks like Force also received an invitation, so possibly expect some kind of DiabloCastish thing from HQ! :). Here's a little video announcement for those of you that just want some other cool stuff to listen to.

Dolaiim posted a message on Only seven skills?Posted in: Diablo III General Discussion
I see nothing in the replies here that would indicate that DIII is "becoming" WoW. I'd be interested to hear why you've drawn that conclusion.
What's your actual point? Do you want more active skills than Diablo II? You have them. Do you want more flexibility in how you choose those skills? You have that. Do you want the ability to modify skills to better tailor them to your traits (i.e. passive skills) and gear? You have that. Do you want Diablo II? You have that, it's already installed on your computer.
What do you want, and what do you think you're not getting?
I think "skills" in this case would be better described as "spells" (SHHH barbarians. that was a pre-emptive SHH). You have 7 different attack "spells" on top of normal damage. The devs have worked very hard to make all skills consistently useful during gameplay. I would suggest having a look at the great wiki on this site to learn more about the many, many different ways you'll be able to kill the ass out of monsters. -

ScyberDragon posted a message on Diablo 3's StoryPosted in: News & AnnouncementsOne of the biggest mysteries that surrounds Diablo III is the story line that we will play out throughout the course of the game. Although next to no information has been given about the story, there have been many hints and clues about different areas of the game and brief explanations of instances. By compiling all of these random tidbits together, we can being to paint the picture of what will happen during Diablo III.
First, we will begin with the overall story line. Starting with the broadest of plots we look towards the official Diablo III site. On the main page it states:
Official Blizzard Quote:
When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram Cathedral seeking clues to defeat new stirrings of evil, a fiery harbinger of doom falls from the heavens, striking the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. This fire from the sky reawakens ancient evils and calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells once again.
This sets up the basis to the story that we will be going through in Diablo III. Perhaps the most important part of this quote is the fact that it states this "harbinger of doom falls from the heavens". What exactly is this fiery harbinger of doom is still unknown, however. Is it Tyrael kicked out of the Heavens, coming to warn of us of the ultimate results of his actions at the end of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction? Perhaps it is the actions of the lesser Sanctuary loving angels, aimed to destroy all of Sanctuary itself by reawakening the Evil that still lay beneath Tristram Cathedral? It could really be anything that just happens to be falling from the sky and not the High Heavens themselvs. Regardless, this beginning of the game is seen in the first cinematic that was shown announcing the game and will begin the story.
Beyond this mysterious omen, we also know that we will begin the story with Deckard Cain where we find him in New Tristram. He has called upon our aid to help fight against this new resurgence of Evil. Being one of the citizens of Sanctuary and Tristram through all three Diablo games now, Deckard Cain is the last of the Horadric Mages. We know, thanks to our interview with Michael Gough (the voice actor for Deckard Cain), that "there is just more on his emotional plate in this one, than there has been before. He now has different things to be concerned about, at different points in the story, and his life, and all that". They have added an additional character, Leah, who seems to be an important character to not only Deckard Cain this time around but the story of Diablo III as well.
With Deckard Cain being the last of the Horadric Mages, this brings us to an interesting side note for the story that may contribute to the overall plot of the game. In Diablo II, we obtained an item known as the Horadric Cube. In Diablo III, a similar item with the exact same graphic will be used to deconstruct items as oppose to creating them in the previous game. While simply a change in mechanic, it is the name change of this item that is intriguing. Renamed the Nephalem Cube, this item now reflects the origins of Sanctuary itself. For those who do not know, the Nephalem was the name given to the offspring of of Inarius and Lilith, the Angel and Demon who gave birth to man and Sanctuary itself. You can learn more about this story in the video recap created byforce and written by phrozendragon. Long story short, they created the Worldstone to hide these people from Heaven and Hell. Another side effect of the stone was that it slowly drained the Nephalem's power turning them into regular humans that we know them as now. However, with the Worldstone destroyed by Tyrael, we can assume that man will soon be regaining these powers that their ancestors once had, making them more powerful than Angels or Demons. Bashiok commented on just how pivotal this change will be to the story of Diablo III.
Official Blizzard Quote:
It has a name. It is not Salvage Cube. The name does include Cube, though. The name is sort of a spoiler, which is why we haven't revealed it yet.
Now that we know how the game will begin, we need to know where the plot will go. The biggest clue we have of the overall storyline is a quote from Jay Wilson in an interview with IGN during the 2009 Blizzcon.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Well, our story tends to focus a lot more on the two major demons and the impending invasion of Sanctuary.
Supposed images of Belial and AzmodanWhile he never directly states who these two major demons are, there is some educated thought that can help us figure out who he is talking about. For those who do not know much about the lore of Sanctuary, there are seven greater evils. These evils are made up of three prime evils: Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto and there are also four lesser evils; Andariel, Duriel, Belial, and Azmodan. Now, before the events of Diablo, the three prime evils are exiled from Hell with Andariel and Duriel going with them to Sanctuary. Of course, throughout Diablo II, we ended up destroying all five of these demons. This, however, leaves both Belial and Azmodan who are waring against each other for complete control over Hell. We can assume that these last two Evils are the ones that are now invading Sanctuary. The question is why have they moved their feud from Hell onto this mortal plane? Without going into details, Jay Wilson did say:
It is possible that Azmodan and Belial's plan to kick out the prime evils may have had more to it then it first appears. Perhaps they were testing to see how strong the humans were or knew that they would be the only ones strong enough to actually destroy the prime evils for them. While we do not know what their plan was or still is, we do know that these two are now after Sanctuary and it will be up to us stop them from doing so.
Official Blizzard Quote:
We have this conundrum early on of should you have a game called Diablo without Diablo in it. We can debate that, whether we should or shouldn't, but what it comes done to is we've had a storyline in mind that's been going back quite a ways. So, without revealing too much I can say that there's been a plan. If the player thinks they've outsmarted forces of Hell and evil and they basically won, well, they are in for a big shock. Because really what they are going to discover in Diablo III is things pretty much went exactly the way Hell wanted to all along.
Moving on to the climax of the story, how it all ends is what is the most important part of the story. However, because of this, we know the least amount of information concerning this topic. As cliché as it may be, the game may very well conclude, once again, with us defeating Diablo. Perhaps his exile from Hell was part of his master plan to be reincarnated into the form we see him in now. Many wondered if Diablo would even be returning in this third sequel. However, it has been officially confirmed that the demon seen at the end of the cinematic is Diablo and that he will be returning in Diablo III. Many people will still argue that he will not actual be a demon you fight or that you will not even face him in the original Diablo III but he will not show up until one of the multiple expansions they have planned for the game. Regardless of when and how he appears, it only seems right that the Lord of Terror is, at some point, the climax to the game. After all, we know that Diablo III and its expansions will conclude this story that started fifteen years ago with Diablo I.
Official Blizzard Quote:
We're not saying this is the end of the Diablo universe, but we are trying to bring this storyline to a close. It's not just Diablo III -- we've got plans beyond
Now with the all of the story we know so far explained, we need to know how we will actually play out this epic journey. Blizzard is attempting to expand the universe in Sanctuary and there are 1,000 places we could end up at along this path. While each act will span a larger area than before, there will still be distinct areas in which each take place. We also know we have seen the first three acts that will be in Diablo III.
Official Blizzard Quote:
You've actually seen some of the first three Acts already, and we probably won't be revealing too much more than what we've already shown. We really want to try to keep as much a surprise for you when you play through the game the first time as possible. We will be announcing all of the game systems though before beta, so there are a few things left as far as reveals go. While beta will obviously be a lot of fun, should you get the chance to get in and help test, it'll only be a small part of the whole game. Some people want to know everything, but we're really trying to preserve the surprise and wonderment (that we hope will come with exploring Diablo III) as much as possible.
Act 1:
We have seen quite a bit of act 1. This act will begin in New Tristram with the fiery crash into Tristram Cathedral. Our heroes of Diablo III will be starting off their journey investigating this phenomenon. We will go back into the Cathedral that the brave heroes of Diablo I ventured into. We also know that King Leoric will be playing an important part in this act despite not being the actual act boss. In fact, we don't know who will be the boss of any act for certainty. King Leoric plays a big role in the overall story of Diablo as his son was the first sacrifice to bring Diablo into this realm physically. We have seen plenty of screenshots of Leoric's Torture Chamber as well as a couple pieces of concept art of this demon. We do not know exactly how this act will conclude but however it does, it will bring us to our next destination, act 2.
Act 2:
Act 2 will take our characters to the East venturing in the deserts of Kehjistan. We were first shown this desolate area when the Monk was announced at the 2009 Blizzcon. Within this desert, we will also be going to the city of Caldeum. An important piece of information to note right now is that Jay Wilson mentioned that we would be visiting the homeland of the Wizard. While she actually originates from Xiansai, her story also takes her to Caldeum where she learned a lot of her skills. While it is possible we will be venturing to this island, it is also possible that Caldeum is the city of origin that we will be visiting. Moving the story from the meteor to the invasion of Belial and Azmodan, we know that act 2 is where will be encountering Belial. How this plays out in the game is still unknown but he definitely is the driving force through this act.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Act two's a little bit more of an intrigue and deception-focused story, because Belial is in there.
Act 3:
This next act has us going back to the West to Bastion's Keep. Bastion's Keep was seen in the 2010 Blizzcon panel "Crafting Sanctuary". This Keep happens to be placed right on the edge of Arreat Crater where the Worldstone once stood until Tyrael destroyed it. All we know about the area is that is the last line of defense against a horde of demons and monsters. We saw a glimpse of this assault in the cinematic as a demonic army marched. It is possible that Azmodan is commanding this army in attempt to take over Sanctuary.
Act 4:
Practically nothing is known about the last act of the game. All we do know is that it will be the shortest of all of the acts leading up to the climax of the game. There is a chance that we will, once again, be venturing to Hell to defeat Diablo much like we have in the previous games. We could be doing this by venturing into Arreat crater.
There are a few missing holes in this act progression compared to the story. There has been a lot of concept art of Jungle-type areas that do not seem to fit into any of these acts as far as we know. This could be explained by the unknown transition of all of the acts and just how we will be going from one area to the next. Even in between acts 2 and 3, we seem to be going from one side of Sanctuary to the other. There has to be some story explanation that has us traversing such a large area of Sanctuary.
Now, with the story spelled out and how it translates to the gameplay, we are left with a few questions about Diablo III. The first is what is the harbinger of doom from Heaven? Why are Belial and Azmodan trying to take Sanctuary now that they have control over Hell? Do the angels care about what is going on in Sanctuary between the humans and demons. Most importantly, how will it all end?

My video for Blizzard's Video Memory contest is a finalist! Unforunately I've fallen into second place behind a WoW video. Not bashing WoW, since I was once a WoW player. However my video shares memories of playing thee Diablo back in the day with my buddies. Among our group of friends, my buddy Chris had the only computer—we would spend the weekend at his house playing / watching movies.
To ensure we all could play, we'd schedule out gaming "shifts". So I'd get up to play from 5:30am to like 7. It was my shift.

Daemaro posted a message on Sanctuary Speculation: Imperius
Imperius is a member of the enigmatic Angiris Council. He is thought to be the Archangel of War. Wearing crimson red robes and a gleaming breastplate, he is anything but patient. In fact, his name is likely derived from the word imperious, which means overbearing and urgent. He makes a cameo appearance in The Sin War trilogy in the last book, The Veiled Prophet, fervently denouncing Sanctuary and it's denizens. If humanity had an angelic enemy, he is certainly the number one candidate. Below are some quotations directly from The Sin War that show just how much Imperius despises humanity.
[Imperius talking about Sanctuary]
THERE IS NO NEED FOR THIS DEBATE TO CONTINUE....OR TO HAVE EVEN BEGUN, declared a majestic angel with robes of royal red and a shining breastplate upon which the image of an upturned sword blazed. THE PATH IS OBVIOUS....WHAT HAS BEEN WROUGHT BY THE TRAITOR MUST BE UNDONE! LET THE HOST FINISH WHAT IT BEGAN, EVEN IF WE MUST CUT THROUGH A HUNDRED RANKS OF DEMONS TO ACCOMPLISH IT!
[Imperius talking about Inarius]
FROM HIS CRIMES WAS THIS ABOMINATION CALLED SANCTUARY CREATED! JUDGE ONE, AND YOU RIGHTLY JUDGE THEM BOTH!
[Imperius talking about Inarius and Sanctuary]
I SAY THAT THE RENEGADE MUST BE FOREVER IMPRISONED AND HIS NEST OF DEMON-SPAWN ERADICATED!
[Imperius talking to Tyrael]
WELL, OLD FRIEND? asked Imperius. HOW WILL YOU CHOOSE, YOU WHO HAVE SEEN THEM AT THEIR MOST FOUL? WILL YOU VOTE WITH ME AND PUT AN END TO THIS MOST HEINOUS OF SPAWNING GROUNDS?
Perhaps his most notable physical feature is the blazing upturned sword on his breastplate. When I think of the natural state of a sword, it's being held by the hilt with the blade pointing upwards. Then if it were to be upturned it would be sitting on the tip of it's blade with the hilt towards the top. A cross could easily be construed as a sword in the Diabloverse where there are no real world religions.
When Richard Knaak was asked about this from Diablofans member, TH3N00S3 he replied:
This certainly doesn't mean they couldn't have changed their idea of what an upturned sword is. Even Richard Knaak admitted the word upturned can really be taken either way in this case.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Thanks for your interest. There are two distinct and, imho, contradictory definitions for 'upturned'. In this case, I went with the definition that refers to an object turned business end up, such as 'an upturned nose'. This means the point of the sword would be toward the head. Based on conversations with Blizzard in the past, they see it the same way.
Now this takes us to Diablo3.com where the page initially said:
Official Blizzard Quote:
When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram's Cathedral seeking clues to new stirrings of evil, a comet from the heavens strikes the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. The comet carries a dark omen in its fiery being and it calls the heroes of Sanctuary To defend the mortal world against the rising powers of The Burning Hells – And even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself.
But was changed a couple years back to:
Official Blizzard Quote:
When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram Cathedral seeking clues to defeat new stirrings of evil, a fiery harbinger of doom falls from the heavens, striking the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. This fire from the sky reawakens ancient evils and calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells once again.
There is a pretty large difference here. In the first version it seems to hint at angelic intervention at some point in the story. In the later version it seems like they've pulled all that back to hint only at demonic influence. Perhaps they're planning for an expansion?
If The High Heavens were to intervene, at this point after their stance during The Sin War, it's rational to assume they wouldn't be friendly. These quotes also seem to point to the importance of the comet, or what they would have us believe is a comet.
All throughout Diablo 2, Tyrael makes it very clear that the Angiris Council does not approve of his meddling in the affairs of mortals. Is it possible that destroying the Worldstone was the final straw? Could Tyrael have been cast from The High Heavens? I don't know of any comet with that little substance. It is my belief this is Tyrael plummeting into the depths of the Cathedral.
Now after the events of The Sin War, no one would be more willing to toss Tyrael from the graces of The Heavens than Imperius. Tyrael was the deciding vote that could have landed Sanctuary directly in the path of angelic annihilation. In this piece of concept art it appears to be the same angel we see with the cross or sword on his chest to be looming above another angel which appears to me to be Tyrael shielding his eyes.
If this is the case, Imperius wouldn't be acting alone. It's very likely that the Angiris Council of The High Heavens once again held a vote deciding the fate of the human race. This time we may not have came out so lucky. During the last vote the two angels that voted to save humanity were Auriel and Iltherael, who essentially agreed they wanted to let us grow and hopefully become allies. One thing is certain though, both The High Heavens and The Burning Hells wish to use us as pawns. One wrong step in one direction and we'll become puppets to The Hells , to the other, The Heavens will destroy us. Heaven has been watching, and what have they seen?
The Prime Evils, after being unleashed, are all finally caught inside their own soulstone. Then, by human error, all the stones were damaged. A horadric mage attempting to contain Baal becomes consumed and corrupted, eventually leading to the corruption of the world stone. A religion is founded by Akarat, based on the visions and teachings of what we are led to believe is an Archangel named Yaerius. That religion evolves into the Zakarum church, which is infamous for its inquisition and then becomes the perfect staging ground for the corruption of Mephisto. After being secretly usurped by the demon lord, the paladins of the church were sent on a crusade throughout the lands murdering all non believers suspected of the use of demonic magic. Mephisto then used the church to provide him with fresh human sacrifices.
A small group of heroes develop extraordinary powers, once again, and defeat Diablo only to succumb to his taint later. One going on to become The Dark Wanderer, one becoming Blood Raven, and the last becoming The Summoner in the Arcane Sanctuary. Nihlathak shows them that humanity is untrustworthy and has a thirst for power and a price at which we can be bought. In Diablo III the Triune is emerging once again. Once a major religion in the world headed by Lucion then, and now another demon. We have groups of humans known as Demon Hunters, wielding demonic magics. We just may appear too much of a risk at this point, a loose end.
This time we do not have Uldyssian to protect us. Will we be able to survive an onslaught from The Heavens trying to purge us and the driving forces of The Hells trying to enslave us? If Tyrael truly has been cast out of The High Heavens, what could this mean for our characters in Diablo III? What could this mean for all of Sanctuary?

Gear
For me, my end game Barb is dark, and fiery. Due to life long battle, and two time defeater of Diablo he fears not using damned armor and weapons. His single Maul glows with ancient script, his armor black, smoldering from the cracks which glow red hot. A constant fog falls from him, gathering on the ground around him when he stands still.
Skills
My attacks are straight to the point, bashing, and crushing my way through any foe. If in a tight stop I use a flashy aoe skill, maybe a runed ground stomp, or seismic slam.
How do you see your character come endgame?

There is no need really, there's barley even a justification to do it.. Between the extra $800 for the monitor, and $200-$600 extra needed for the extra PC parts it's hard to justify spending 1k for a few extra pixels.. lol
How I see it is that it's something I've always wanted, and it's getting to that point in life where i have to starting putting away money for "real life" things as people call them. So this is my last chance to splurge for a pretty long time. I'm pretty much working all summer only to pay for this rig, which I justify to myself with, - I find happiness in gaming more so than almost anything else, so I'm going to do what I've always wanted to, while I still can and go all out. -
My friends laugh that my PC rig will be worth more than my car, but the thing is I'll surely be gaming more so than driving, I'm not a car fanatic, and I have an amazing girlfriend so why do I need a better car ya know? Plus it's not like it's a POS anyway, 1998 528i..
No one NEEDS a high end gaming rig, but no one needs a sports car, no one needs a 500,000 square foot house, no one needs to drink soda, or eat candy. It's what makes you happy!

You always beat me to the punch Scyber.. Come'on man .
Quote taken form Diablo 3 Wiki.
"The proprietary engine will incorporate Blizzard's custom in-house physics, a change from the original usage of Havok's physics engine,[9] and feature destructible environments with an in-game damage effect. The developers are aiming to make the game run on a wide range of systems, and have stated that DirectX 10 will not be required.[8] Diablo III will use a custom 3D game engine[10] in order to present an overhead view to the player, in a somewhat similar way to the isometric view used in previous games in the series.[8] Enemies will utilize the 3D environment as well, in ways such as crawling up the side of a wall from the depths into the combat area.[5]"
That picture is truly is worth 1000 words in this thread. It looks outstanding, even in the state of completion the game was in back than.
Chances are the game will come out Q1-Q2 2012.. Will it make a difference? No.. While it's true that technology moves quickly, as known since Moore's Law; that doesn't directly correlate to graphics as you always rest your opinion on. Take Crysis for example, came out November 16, 2007 and is still the standard for hyper realism.

* All items are categorized to standard Diablo 2 weapon classes. So Maces = Flails, Polearm = Scythe, and so on.
I love playing as a Barb for the lush array of weapons to choose from. Being more of a DPS player, I sway from weapon to weapon trading for higher damage, though some make me feel more powerful just by how they look. Mauls and their bludgeoning qualities are one of my favorites.

Anywho, I really enjoy the colors in the chosen art direction. I honestly think the game looks perfect. I don't use that word lightly, I have seen nothing, not one thing that I would change in the most recent screen shots.

Good point, even though the armors will have the same stats, the stats themselves work differently for each class.. The amount of balancing in this game is ridiculous, ten fold the work it looks like at a quick glance.
So now with that fact in mind that willpower only effects one class, mana another, and so on. Armor has a lot more possibilities as to what class it'll benefit most. This is pretty exciting.
I don't agree in how you think it should work. This in essence in the same as a strength, or dexterity requirements, just with a different look. In D2 the barb started with more Str, not much but that wasn't the point, the point was to hint at what kind of traits represent that class. Each class had to meet a trait (stat) requirement to use certain armor. This forced the player to use stat points on stats that might not have any other real use than to where a piece of gear. Your system essentially would do the same thing, time, and points spent just focussed on gear that you'll eventually replace, and those points might have been more useful somewhere else.
I think the system they have now, where lvl is the main requirement opens the door to a lot mroe opportunities for point distribution to benefit your character much more than just meeting a requiorment for a piece of temporary armor.

Not to make my first post an objection, but I don't feel this is very "Diablo". The predictability of getting a certain weapon from a certain type of monster is much more WoW than Diablo, and not a feature I personally would like I see make it's way into Diablo 3. When a rare item drops from a regular mob, it's like getting a Christmas gift in July
