So, anyone else excited about this game? Don't know how many of you are familiar with the previous one, but as we finally get to see some stuff from this game I gotta say it looks awesome!
They've got a $1million price pool tournament with the major teams from Dota competing over at Gamescon. This will also be the first official public viewing of the game with commented streams broadcasted for the whole event.
They seem to have borrowed a bit of the visual style from Team Fortress 2 and mixed it up with original dota along with other graphical improvements. I've played a lot of HoN and I like that game, but it just feels like Dota 2 is going to get the genre back to its roots, along with all the classic heroes that we all know and love from the original.
to be honest, unless its free to play i dont think there's a chance that it will bloom out and be "viral" title. Comparing screen-shots, HoN and LoL look much better and were in competition since 2009. during this year LoL has made number of improvements attracting over 18m players and earning the title of #1 game of 2011. on top of that once the season 2 begins, and new "map" dominion comes out it will be something like a bonus to the game...
unless Dota2 is Free to play and has better style/balance/"originality" i dont see it doing well against all popular LoL.
the only thing stands out is the name "Dota".
it also seems that many heroes will be direct copy from dota game and we can only observe how will it do later...
nyway long story short, i am looking forward to try it out and see what it offers me. however i am not yet looking to spend any money on it.
Its funny, because the reason I would BUY Dota 2 is if its NOT free to play, if it doesn't have the shitty, insulting business model that LoL has.
That really is all I care about. I'm not much of a fan of the DOTA genre at all in the first place, but if you buy it like a normal game I might just go for it.

LoL has a great business model.
their main profit is designing 'skins' and constantly adding new champs that 'rich' kids willing to buy. the money goes into improving game design, balancing, constant surveillance of servers that is supported by riot gaming.
there are ton of 60$ games that focus on grabbing ur cash and giving u peace of shit to work with. not worth the investment.
-this is the reason more games try to sell 'vanity' items, cash shops, and advertisement to make profit out of existing item and improve it.
free to play is dominating the world of gaming - yielding better business model overall.
(LoL, TF2, Runescape(rofl), GPotato, ijji, and bounch more games)
ofcorse having both initial investment and investment over time is a good model too (such as freken CoD) but there has to be balance.
imo P2P gaming that has subscription will also go downhill once other offer same product for free.

And how much money do I need to spend on LoL to get the full game?
I don't really care what argument you can come up with. If there was a way to buy the full game at a fair price then it wouldn't be an insulting business model. Just because lots of people can waste 3 years of their time on it for free doesn't mean its not stupid. I'd probably have to spend 300$ to get the "full game", or waste 3 years of my time getting everything. That alone is what makes it stupid.
And how much money do I need to spend on LoL to get the full game?
$0.
That's the best part about it. It an awesome FTP model. Some who dose t pay can be just as good as someone who does. Iv spent $30 because it a fun game and they deserve some cash for it
TF2 looks sketchy, main texture brush style is a real life brush, but dota2's textures look more posterized, cartooney, the game's more serious than TF2, so there.
And it's promising, yes. Dunno about F2P, sure hope it is tho.

0$ is not the full game. Wasting 3 years of your life to get the full game is what you must dedicate. That you consider yourself full by playing a few heroes is irrelevant.

3 years of constant development of the game and monthly additional champions, a soon to be released second mode (Dominion) and added servers for better latency (very recently they added new servers and split them to support more people without queues). Good deal. There is a store version of LoL (around 20 euro where I live) that includes around 25 champions.
On topic, however, I watched a couple games of Dota 2 on the live stream. I can't say I really liked what I saw. The graphics are quite lifeless and without a style of their own. The original Dota was styled around Warcraft and while Dota wants to make it look "Like it", they didn't really succeed. Animations are quite weird too. I won't talk about balance cause it's very tough to do it right without releasing the game and checking the suggestions from the players.
This makes no sense, when you buy Diablo do you get the best armor for free? No. You are saying that you don't get the full game? You get it, but you have to work to unlock it, exactly the same as in Diablo. In LoL you have to spend money only in skins for champions. Every champion in the game can be bought with points, and it's not so hard to get the more expensive ones. Also, the most game changing feature, the runes, can't be bought with money.
Yes, you have to work 3 years to get something that is like a character class. Yes, getting them all is the point here, not just "a few". A price for a single hero is 5$. If Diablo required me to play for 3 years to get the best armor and said armor was game changing, then it would be a fair comparison, but its not.
I don't care about silly excuses. Buying everything costs way too much, and a single hero is 5$. There is no argument around this or "but you can get everything if you work for it". The prices are retarded and force you to either waste a ridiculous amount of money, or a ridiculous amount of time, when all I'd really want to is try various heroes here and there with no limitations on what I can pick.

You can work three years to get all the champions, or you can get one champion you really enjoy and play that one, getting points for runes, other "alt" champions, or whatever, while you play and enjoy your main champion.
And if you think that the point of the game is to get all the champions, then the point of Diablo must be to get all the armors right?

I can't say I agree with you. I think the graphics looks fantastic. I'm a big fan of the TF2-ish (happens to be one of my favorite games :P) cel-shaded style and I think they did a great job in Dota 2. While I like HoN and its graphics I think what they have going is a good mix between "realistic" and "distinctive", if you get what I mean.
About how popular it will be.. It's hard to say how much of an impact it will have, but it will be popular I bet you. LoL has a huge fanbase and will likely stay huge, but I think the majority of HoN players are just waiting for Dota 2 to get into beta/release. Unfortunately, for S2 games :P.
Gonna bring this up again to post about the new dota 2 survey they've started. So basically they upgraded the infrastructure to allow for more players in the beta and now they are looking to invite. To sign up you have to go through a quick survey asking about your computer setup and Dota 1 experience. This is to get a wide arrange of players and to better match you up against equally skilled people :).
Just updating to tell everyone that I've received a beta key and have been playing a lot and it's super fun imho! Capturing the spirit of Dota 1 and refreshing it. It's of course still in beta so a few quirks here and there and not that many heroes are ported yet. If anyone has the beta and wanna go for a game hit me up!
Real fun game!
Got the Dota 2 beta a while ago, and its just super fun!
IMO its better than HoN and LoL, maybe because its less kids whining and flaming others, thou the reason for this is that is still in beta i suppose.
But id recomend most ppl to try to get a beta and try it out such fun game with steam`s own tweaks
