Okay, I've read a lot of threads saying that the last class will be some sort of Rogue // Amazon type thing.
The whole point of this thread is to discuss how it won't be (or for you to prove me wrong). I will be using logic and citations to prove my case. Please be mature and discuss rationally.
We've seen several archetypes thus far in what Blizzard has released:
~Barbarian - Sword and Shield type pure Melee warrior
~Witch Doctor - Enemy Manipulation, Damage over Time, and minion creator
~Wizard - Pure caster
~Monk - Speed Powerhouse
And Damage Archetypes being;
~Pure Strong Melee (Barbarian)
~Disease and Fire (Witch Doctor)
~Lightning, Arcane, Cold (Wizard)
~Holy and Fast, Weaker Melee (Monk)
Being that each class is capable of decimating its opponent at all ranges, we can safely assume that the last class will be able to do that very same thing. Based on this strand of logic, the last class cannot be a pure ranged class.
Now, someone had pointed out to me earlier that a short bow was shown as a dropped item in the Barbarian gameplay trailer at around 3:55. That is an excellent counterpoint, but the only issue is that the game has evolved quite a bit since then. To illustrate my point, I challenge you to find a Staff, some type of Claw-type weapon, or a wizard's orb in any of the previous videos, before the class was announced. I watched each video closely and didn't find it at all. Why? The game has changed tremendously.
So, now that I've finally laid my claim, I challenge you all to an honest debate as to why I'm wrong.

I'm betting the last class is going to be a balanced class, capable of doing a little bit of everything.
I"ve concluded that the fifth class, but not final because the expansion will add more characters, is going to be the bard.
Wow... nice! Here I'm thinking I can have a nice mature debate about a specific topic, and your insight is really a testament to my overexpectation of maturity and intelligence found here.
Obvious troll is obvious.

I'm sorry, but with the release of the Monk, it's a little bit too early for analytical discussions.
And it's at least a year before the fifth character is going to be release, so you can probably bring this up again in a couple of months and the excitement will probably have worn off by then for such a discussion.
Harsh.
I think your logic is fine up untill the point that without a ranged class your pretty much removing all bows, crossbows, javelins (if they were making an appearance), and potentially throwing weapons from the drops. If your not then there 2-4 weapon catagories which will be fairly useless and unused.
Another thing to consider is that if the last class is a bard class, bards are known for being the jack of all trades and in so doing they could very well be proficient in ranged weapons in the diablo universe or perhaps they have a generalized combat tree that would add bonuses to their ability to use all weapons and skills that work universally? I really couldn't say but if not a ranged class then I would really like a bard

I agree in that the next class won't be just a ranger. It is either going to be balanced or something totally different. If am strongly hoping for a druid class. I know that Blizzard's favorite character is the Witch Doctor, so I think they will lean towards a class that allows the same sort of creativity. An all range class gives the character a limited amount of creativity, as we saw in Diablo 2 ( Frost arrow, etc).
Hopefully it will be some sort of hybrid character who is capable of firing a bow, but has other elements as well. If they do make an all ranged class, he better be a lot more exciting than the previous Amazon and Rogue.
Guys, this is not a thread about "What do you think the next class is?" but more "Do you agree or disagree with my logic, and why?"
I do agree with your logic. This is why I think it will be a bard or a druid. The wizard provides the ranged abilities with the bard probably having some ranged capability in terms of seven sided strike (being able to start an attack from distance). Because of that, I think the 5th class will be more hybrid like with something such as an Amazon coming in an expansion.
So lets look at what we have got. The barb, simple... nothing changed from d2, character wise. Wizard, is just a revamp of the sorceress. THen there is Witch Doctor, i consider him a Necro with more badass abilities.
Now we have Monk, and if you look at the concept art, and the idea behind him, he is really a mix between assasin and paladin. He holy, and sneaky, fast and also uses claws of somesort.
Now logically, the only two classes left from d2 are Druid and Amazon. So i belive that the next class for D3 will be a mix between thoose two. Im thining a ranger with elemental abilities, and summonig powers, but also a darker character. Kind of like a Theif, you know with the hoods and the cloaks.
I cant really think of a great name for this char....

Jay Wilson confirmed that the next character is a character from one of the previous Diablos.

This is what im hoping the new class will be. Can Blizzard make a character like this without making him too fictional or ridiculous? I don't squat about Diablo lore. I would pretty much rather dip my head in a port-o-potty than read the sin wars.

I hope you do realize that some thing like a amazon is not necessarily long ranged fighter. The new class will according to me definitely have skills that will be very effective at long range using thrown weapons , but will also have powerful multiple hit melee skills, just like a amazon has the ability to go Bows/Jav Shield/Two handed Jav as well.
It would be stupid to say last class is a pure ranged class , cause a pure ranged class will just get pwned.
Jay Wilson confirmed that the next character is a character from one of the previous Diablos.
I don't recall hearing that. From what I remember the Barb is the only returning class in D3.
I agree with your logic that the last class will not be a 100% ranged type of character. But as stated many times I think he/she will have a balance between the both. Being able to use some sort of ranged weaponry or ranged skills and having a good melee attack or good melee skills.
I also like the bard idea. I think Blizzard could pull of something like that. As to if its the next class or not we will have to wait and see.

Well I misspoke just a little bit. Jay said that it may be one from the older games. If you read the below, it sounds like they're already working on the expansion classes and they're still trying to make a decision on which will be the 5th class for the final game and which will be the expansion classes.
IGN: Have you confirmed how many unrevealed classes there are, to round out the entire party?
Jay Wilson: There's one more.
IGN: You did mention that it's being revealed next year, and that it's someone from the previous games?
Jay Wilson: I did say that. I probably shouldn't have said that, because we're not sure that's going to be the case. It's just logical, that's what we tend to do. But it may or may not. I'm not gonna answer it, anyway? [laughs]

Now, if you've seen any of the gameplay footage, we all know that each class can hold its own in both short and long range battles. Even the Barbarian uses Ground Slam and Leap Attack, and the Wizard uses something similar to Arcane Explosion.
