I just finished Diablo on Nightmare, and have been speculating what could be in the expansion. Here's a theory and story line for the next Act, Let me know what you think.
Act V: The Race for the Soul Stone
After Diablo was thrown down from the high heavens, his essence has disintegrated and is banished back to hell. The nephalem and Tyrael agree that Adria must be brought to justice for her crime. Now being the Angel of wisdom, Tyrael appoints the nephalem as an interim angel of justice and is appointed with the task of tracking down Adria and punishing her for her crimes against the heavens and humanity. A massive man hunt begins. During the manhunt, it is revealed the Adria is seeking the soul stone, which was cast out of Diablo's body to resurect him in physical form from hell. In the search for Adria, it is revealed during her travels over the past twenty years, Adria has formed a massive coven of witches to whom all serve her evil deeds. She sends down the coven to annhilate Tristam and all it's inhabitants while she searches for the soulstone. Upon the destruction of Deckard Cain's old house, a secret research chamber is revealed. In Cain's secret writings and journal, the location of Adrias mysterious coven is revealed. Cain kept this a secret out of fear that Leah might have went looking for her. The nephalem travels to an ancient forest of mysterious power where Adria is believed to be hiding. Instead of Adria, the nephalem finds the Dark Wanderer in her place, Admitting to being Adria's lover, he vows to destroy the nephalem. After defeating the Dark Wandrer, A letter from Adria is revealed showing where Adria has traveled for the soul stone. The location is revealed to be in a far away jungle. After going through many treacherous creatures, the nephalme finds Adria and the soulstone. She is using the power from within to open a portal from hell and attempt to draw Diablo's Essence out. Adria is successful in drawing Diablo's essence out. Also, in addition to Diablo's essence, two other figures come out of the portal to hell. One of the figures is Leviathan, the demon and gatekeeper to hell. Leviathan is revealed to be second in command to Ba'al. Leviathan is then defeated by the nephalem, who is the boss for Act V. After Leviathans defeat, before Adria can use the soulstone to fully resuurect Diablo, the nephalem strikes the soulstone. Instead of being destroyed, the soul stone is seperated into six fragments, each containign a Lord of Hell. The other figure emerging from the portal, is none other than Leah. A slightly older and more mature women now, she reveals how she spent the equivalent of many hundred years being tormented in the bowels of hell. Seeing a portal to the portal opening to the mortal realm, she takes advantage of it, with Leviathan chasing after her. Attemting to seek vegence upon her mother, Adria once again escapes with the essence of Diablo. The race is now on between the nephalem and Adria to reunite the fragments of the soul stone,
What do you guys think? Should I work on some more Acts? Hope you enjoyed
Im more worried about running out of content in an expansion than about the story. Normally I love stories in the game but D3 has become kind of boring. However its a cool idea, hoping to see some of these ideas in the expansion.
Very cool read, I really like the plot and the direction you would like the story to go. To add on, what playable characters would you have for the expansion?

One class I've thought about is simply the Horadrum. I would have the Horadrum be highly skilled in dexterity and intelligence through the use of magical weapons. I would take spells and weaponry and combine them into one for this class. I would kind of combine the best of wizard and the monk in this category
I like your ideas OP =) My theory is somewhat the same, minus the cool little details of cain's house ect, but I always thought instead trying to get diablos soul out of hell ( or essence or w/e ) that we / adria go to the void, which is supposedly where they all should be (including cain and leah). And maybe we get to fight baal / meph / andy / durial in the void or something =D That would be the best throwback imo
I'll be pretty surprised if the end-game boss ends up being anybody other than Imperius. I think Adria will play a role in the expansion, and we will battle her at some point as a mini-boss, but I see a lot of evidence that they have set up Imperius to fall and threaten the peace that is established at the end of the D3 story.

I have some plans for Imperius for later Acts, just havent written the story yet
Nice reading, but my theory is that we'll be finding out abou malthael, since he's missing.
It would be cool, cause hes fuckin cool.
Tyrael took his place in his absense as the new leader of the council. Why he wasnt there? Nobody knows, he's just missing. Blizz has a card hidden in the sleeves. I'm really expecting to see Malthael in the expansion. And i hope we see more content than 1 expansion. people might hate me for this comment, but i think it would be cool to do it like WOW, where we get major patchs that add content to the game, so it can be set up for the expansion plot. Thats keeps the game alive. I thought about patches with storylines of the followers and stuff like that, like fighting the last azmodan's generals. We have 7 sins and we fought with a few. I hope this game survive with fresh content for a long period. (:
theory is cool and awesome but the dark wanderer part doesn't fit in and i have a feeling that the minor characters like Shen or Imperius are going to play a part in the next expansion.
Honestly a pretty cool idea, im not a diablo nut and I dont know much about previous Diablo games. The idea seems sound and could be kinda cool if played out right
Some nice ideas.
There are a few loose ends that may be used in the upcoming (two??) expansions:
Major stuff
- Adria: where did she go, what is she doing, needs a beating;
- Malthael: missing, said to be in Pandemonium Fortress going insane, probably needs a reality check;
- Black Soul Stone: fell where, and what about the souls trapped within;
Minor stuff
- Templar's scrolls/tomes: need finding;
- The Prophet (Enchantress): said to be an angel, who is he, where is he;
- Other Sins: Need to be beaten;
Not sure if Imperius will ever be a boss, he may be rash and against the existence of Sanctuary, but still is good at heart, since he's an angel and all...
Just wondering - didn't the soulstone get "destroyed" when Diablo broke free? And we killed Diablo without entrapping him in a soulstone again, he's just... Dead, isn't he?
And Diablo absorbed all the other 6 great evils, to become the "prime" evil, didn't he? That was the point of Adria leaving - she had to get the soulstones from the sins we already killed in the previous expansions, and trap them all in Zolton's black soulstone, so that diablo could get the power of all of them.
Isn't the prophet she's talking about, the prophet we fight in the tomb of the nephalem when searching for Tyrael's sword in act 1? The one that spawns 3 nephalem warriors when we defeat him :o? Atleast he's named "prophet".
Some nice ideas.

I don't know about "good at heart" - remember that the angels in Diablo 3 are not the same as the angels in Christianity. They are simply the "light" side of a conflict, but they are not exactly all "good". Imperius did vote to destroy Sanctuary, which would have effectively been genocide.
Also, he was very obviously about to lay the smackdown on your character when he collapsed because Diablo turned off the lights or some such thing. He was also completely missing from the end cinematic when Tyrael assumed a place on the council as a mortal man.
And finally, there was that anime-style cinematic released shortly before the game launched, in which Diablo seemed happy to have Imperius give in to his wrath and thirst for revenge and kill Diablo. He even said "the trap is sprung" or something like that.
I stand by what I said before - I'll be very surprised if Imperius doesn't end up being an expansion boss.
Last confrontation: 2(or up to 5 if multuiplayer) Demigods bashing against each other, heaven and hell can only watch such epic proportioned bout. As either side rises victorious to save or condenm the entire creation.

vs Nephalem Adria or Diablo.
According to lore: Nephalem >Angels and/or Demons
Last confrontation: 2(or up to 5 if multuiplayer) Demigods bashing against each other, heaven and hell can only watch such epic proportioned bout. As either side rises victorious to save or condenm the entire creation.
