I don't know why people are making out like Cain is this enormously important character. He was just the old guy who ID'd my items. He travelled with you in D2 and delivered a lot of necessary exposition, he had some interesting conversations in D1 but so did everyone else. And apart from Adria they all died in between D1 and D2... we didn't even see that. Apart from Griswold who we just find as a demon or undead or something and unceremoniously kill.
Not that I don't like Cain, it's just he's not really that huge a character or intrinsic to the series to me. "Stay a while and listen" is memorable but so was "what can I do ye for?". He had his role in D1 and D2 and now the series has moved on.
His death seemed more or less appropriately handled. It has a big impact on the characters, especially Leah. If you explore all the conversations and journals there's a lot about Cain in them and Leah's whole development revolves around his death from that point on. Which is the whole point.
What did you expect to see anyway? Cain blasting away at demons with his trusty gatling cannon, chomping on a cigar in a big bloody heroic last stand while the napalm rains down on Charlie overhead? He's just some old guy who reads a lot of books.
I sometimes feel like that not every character one love's has to die in an epic way if he must die. It makes the world more consistent if special people can die like anyone else. Like everyday dangers can hit special characters too.
Everyday dangers like magical demon-worshipping cultists led by a floating witch with butterflies for shoulders.

Please post a spoiler alert in your title or somewhere before you announce the death of a primary character in a completely separate series. You have definitely just dampened that experience for me.

little does blizzard know that the real Deckard Cain died by his pet butterfly that was named Magda
(if blizzard uses your name in their games they will predict how you will die)

In this world...
Is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law?
Is it like the hand of god hovering above?
At least, it is true...
That man has no control, even over his own will.
The death was quite the let down for me as well, however I had hope that he may have returned in a later sequence, potentially as the new Angel of Wisdom. would have felt fitting. Thought maybe it would be something that carried over into the expansion but then they jacked up that chance by making Tyrael become the Angel of Wisdom at the end.
I would like to see him assend into something greater, I feel like Blizzard might give him that. We will just have to wait and see.

If you didn't want to see any spoilers, then perhaps visiting a fan site where there's bound to be spoilers everywhere (especially 2 months after the game came out) isn't the best idea. It's your fault, not mine.
EDIT: just realised you weren't talking about Diablo. Most sincere apologies to a fellow gears player. How have you managed to dodge all of the spoilers from all over the internet?

I haven't actually gotten much into the online gears scene and have really only finished the first one, albeit I have gone through it about 4 or 5 times. But those were of such enjoyment that I figured I would play the 2nd and 3rd when the time comes. But I am more concerned about the journey rather than the destination when it comes to stories (unless I am very into a certain series) or all of that hype people talk about; in short, no worries, just a suggestion for the future.

Worst death ever.
In game cutscene, dies to a MINION or a less evil....by butterflies.....
Should have been something more like: Goes into the dream Leah is trapped in to try and save her, gets blasted by the evils.... or set upon by all the other evils stored in the black soulstone and gets his soul ripped apart by them, ......or eaten by Azmodan during the assault on the keep, or killed by Adria during her betrayal, or blasted by DiabLeah.... heck, even crushed by Belial would have been better.
Unfortunately, I do have to agree with you. I personally feel that Cain's death was somewhat anti-climactic. I have not played Diablo 1 or 2, so as you can probably deduce, Diablo 3 was my first introduction to Cain and the world of Diablo. With that said, even in that short time during Act 1, when Cain was still alive, I became very fond of his character. I enjoyed listening to his journals and the stories he had regarding his relationship with Leah. I actually skipped the cinematic part where Maghda killed Cain the first time (obviously not having any idea that it was going to happen) and then all of a sudden he was dead and I was very confused. So I went back to the part where he died and I was very disappointed in how quickly it went by. If Cain were to die, I would have expected the characters to try and save him, as they did in the Cathedral, or be frozen in place or prevented in some other type of way from helping him and Leah.
For the most part, I think the game has been made exceptionally well and I enjoy most of the story line. It's just that Cain's death sequence leaves me wanting something more, not sure what but just.... something, we all know it's too late now to do anything about it, but it is nice to know that some others feel the same way.
Agreed, it was very lame and uninspired, much like the rest of the story. Now, I don't expect Diablo to have a great storyline and it's not what I play the game for. However, that doesn't mean they can't at least... try. I mean, they had a long, long time to work on this game.
Agreed, but to be honest I believe the Act 1 end cinematic makes up for it (you know, Leah realizing it wasn't all just stories and deciding to follow his legacy).
I thought it was good how Cain died. You don't always need plot twists, meteors, and/or Bruce Willis to kill off major characters. I liked how it was unexpected. People criticize the game too much. I think after all the wait people had their own vision of what Diabo 3 should be and are disappointed when Blizzard has different ideas than them.
Agreed, but to be honest I believe the Act 1 end cinematic makes up for it (you know, Leah realizing it wasn't all just stories and deciding to follow his legacy).
Let’s not get into the Leah part of the story "Derr his stories are crazy but I remember undead seeing skeletons with him as a child".
Overall they put an attempt to put a story in for a hack n slash game, bravo; however the overall attempt was not very good.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.

I agree with you in that regards. Although Cain's death was disappointing. The cinematic was really heartwarming. Showing Leah truly grieving for her Uncle and the sacrifices that he made for her and everything. Who knows, they could always come out with an extended scene of Maghda fighting Cain. Probably not, but one can hope.

The end of Act cinematic was his funeral. That's not enough?

Whoa whoa whoa... And switch it with the "I am Justice" cinematic? Stop.

Cinematic yes, more of a fight no... he was 83 (or close to that) with no combat fighting capabilities WTF do you expect.
