So basically, while he's not exactly a nice guy, everything Zoltun Kulle says is correct and if we'd listened to him we'd have worked out that Adria was not to be trusted, Diablo would never have been released and Leah would probably still be alive. Consider:
1) He's constantly warning you not to trust the people egging you on in your quest
2) When he discovers the black soulstone has the lords of hell inside it he tries to explicitly warn you that you're being manipulated, which you interpret as a betrayal and kill him (doh). Notice that he actually DOES keep his word at least up to this point, the only reason he doesn't hand over the soulstone is because of what he realises your "friends" plan to use it for
3) He keeps telling you that neither angels nor demons can be trusted and humanity's destiny is to become Nephalem... ironically he was originally killed by the other Horadrim which were created by Tyrael, and Tyrael is responsible for the reemergence of Nephalem since he shattered the Worldstone. And the plot of Diablo 3 is basically all about humanity recovering their Nephalem birthright and defeating Hell (and forming an alliance with Heaven apparently, though we'll have to see how that works out)
4) Basically all of the incidental detail he gives you is correct, such as the Angiris Council's vote on Sanctuary's existence. I even saw him hint to the Templar that he knew the true origin of his order, I wonder if he has similar dialogue with the other companions
Now if we hadn't killed him he might still have run off with the soulstone or attacked us or in some other way required killing anyway - I mean, he's a selfish jerk - but he at least had the decency to warn us about what was going to happen so we could've avoided or mitigated it.
I thought he was one of the most badass characters in the story, so I was actually kinda disappointed to see him go. Imperius was badass in his own way, too, but he was more of a jerk than Kulle ever was. He's a character that you want to see get his comeuppance, even though he's technically "good."
edit: Kulle's voice actor was one of the contributing factors for sure.
Yeah, Kulle was chatting with you the entire time he was in your pack, giving you advice and information. He was a bit arrogant, but then so am I. Hell, your character is pretty arrogant in your final conversation with Tyrael before killing Diablo.
And I was really excited to kill Imperius, although the Angiris Council was already down two members and didn't need to lose a third. Plus he was already wounded, and that is no fun.
Its because you never actually beat Belial, and Kulles little structure was the only place he couldn't influence you, when he died the disruption ended and the illusion went on.

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're saying. Probably because I haven't played the game yet. Can you elaborate?
Also, who says Zoltun Kulle is dead? Like, dead-dead? He's technically immortal, right? Maybe we've simply defeated his body, but he might be out there, somewhere.
Man I can't wait to play this game. =[

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
All in the Forger's wake is left bereft and fallow
Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the dark Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

He's crazy. But he's right about pretty much everything.
And yes, Tyrael is really using you. The mastermind behind everything that happened is not Diablo, it's actually Tyrael. He lost every single battle, thus letting the worldstone be corrupted and Diablo come back through Leah+Black Soulstone.
You think he's just too bad at winning battles. But he's fooling you.

I think he was meaning that Belial is trumped up in the game to be this master of deception, and, well, was kind of lacking in that department from what we see, so some have thought the whole thing was an illusion and you don't really beat him or whatever.
Belial, Lord of Lies, is the most elusive of the seven Evils and is a master of deceit. It is said that he manipulated Azmodan into revolt against the Prime Evils. This began the Burning Hells' civil war, which ended with the Dark Exile of the Prime Evils to our mortal realm.
He wields intrigue and artifice as proficiently as you wield your weapons.
Some of the Quest Journal entries suggest he was actually quite devastating during his time on Sanctuary though.
The Lord of Lies casts a long shadow over this land. Towns burn and fall to ruin. Good men and women are thrown to the ground and slaughtered. This world is not the true one, but suffering is suffering. I will end this. I will kill Belial.
Belial is a coward. He fancies himself a master manipulator and hides while he sends others to die in his stead. His cowardice has killed thousands.... No more. Let him try to hide from me. I will find him, and drive him from this world.
I've dreamt of a chance to kill a demon lord. I would give up my chance now if it meant I could undo the suffering this land has seen. But what's done is done. And I will see Belial's corpse lying on the ground, riddled with my bolts.
How long has Belial ruled over Caldeum, the city that I once called home? A month? A year? More? For the near-destruction of this great city, for the dead, and for the people of Alcarnus, I will kill him. The time for talk is over.
Presumably Zoltun Kulle can come back, since the Horadrim had to slice him up and seal all his parts away the first time to make sure he didn't return. The characters all seem to think they killed him in the Quest Journal though. Maybe the cutscene after that battle says something about it and I don't remember.
I once read that Kulle learned to cheat death itself. How interesting if that turns out to be true.
If he has cheated death, then he is powerful, and he is a fool. Death is part of the cycle of life and rebirth; to sidestep it is to lose your humanity.

Non nobis, Domine, non nobis sed nomini tuo da gloriam.
He's just a stereotypic character based on the fact that power corrupts. Even though, he's a nice old-school Horadrim, he is mad and obsessed with the soulstone. That's it. Kill him.
It's not. But he's obviously in it for himself so if he had survived I doubt he would've joined the campfire and sung songs. Probably would've tried to make off with the soulstone and use it to his own ends, he is obsessed with it after all. So we might've ended up having to kill him anyway.

Hmm, Tyrael appears to have gotten what he wanted out of all this - he got to experience life as a mortal, understand humans, defeat all the forces of Hell and forge an alliance between Heaven and Sanctuary. If he masterminded the whole thing then maybe that's what he wanted all along... but then the Horadrim killing Zoltun Kulle seems kind of counter-productive as his "plan" hinges on the Nephalem re-emerging.
Zoltun Kulle was only interested in world domination, and played along just long enough to recover his body and the black soulstone. Given that he was the Diablo 3 equivalent of Gollum, I think we're probably making a mountain out of a mole hill here.
Zoltun Kulle could have made us better than Demons or Angels instead of us being gang raped by their tentacles wings and soul stones. Also his voice is fucking awesome!

If you got to choose between aiding the rebirth of Diablo (with the power of all evils united), and Kulle's world domination, what would you choose?

Kulle is the über-cool tragic anti-hero of Diablo, just like Illidan in Warcraft. They served to help, but got corrupted. Basically sacrificed themselves. I hated see them go... Some great fun left the games with them.

That's some deep izh right der'
TL:DR: Things turned out fine.
