Obviously this is all spoilers. Here's a direct quote from Chris Metzen from the CE DVD, referring to Leah:
It's tragic what happens to her. But I think the truth of Leah is she's innately heroic. She's a good person. But this evil was rooted at a genetic level. And the turn that her life takes was inevitable to some great degree.
When ultimately her turn comes, it feels terrible. We want you to feel like you've been socked in the gut, like you know, "anyone but her". (sic)
Her spirits still out there somewhere. There's a good girl there that deserves to be saved and... brought back from the Abyss.
While we don't have any clue yet what subsequent chapters will be, ah couple clues (sic) [Metzen winks and smiles at the camera], I'd bet that we would chase that down. Because it feels right from a story level, and it feels right from a character level.
What do you make of this? For those people who thought it was cruel for Blizzard to introduce Leah, allow you to grow fond of her, then off her so fast in tragic fashion - how would you feel about a potential expansion story arc themed along the lines of finding her soul?
What potential stories do you think could lie ahead for Leah, should she be featured in future story direction as Metzen hints at?
And keep in mind: As fun as it sounds to simply say "yeah - lets find Leah" - we know that any future expansion must have a compelling conflict to frame a story against. So would does the conflict come from?
Yup. And the Horde will save Garrosh after MoP. I really do like Leah, yet I won't argue with her coming back as a sexy evil demon person either. Doesn't seem like the case though, unless Metzen wants to add a little twist to his typical plot lines.
Some how I didn't pick up the clue when I watched. I think it would be awesome to go to the Abyss in an expansion. My only thoughts on anything story wise they could do to get us their would be either the missing Wisdom angel (sorry forget the name) becoming corrupted or Thatmet (sp? lol) being reincarnated and having to go to the abyss to fight him.
I'd like to hear more of Trag'Oul and possibly the other worlds of the guardians that are like him, because there are other worlds out there apart from sanctuary, and I'd like to know if the heavens and the hells apply to those or if they have their own sects of light/darkness or if they have nothing like that at all.
What you are giving here is not a typical Metzen plot. Its a typical plot of entire fiction since, like... forever? Saving the princess and all that. Apart from that, we do not know how things will still unfold. Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 ultimately ended with a rather grimm note (yeah, you "killed" the Big D yet in the end there was always some "BUT").
As for Kerrigan I still have a feeling that perhaps she only got "saved" so she could later make some sort of sacrifice instead of ending as a final boss to kill. Speculations, speculations.
In the D3 expansion we may very well see Leah again. Or not. I would not mind to see her, I like to continue story of established characters instead of killing them one by one. A living character is more interesting and has more potential from dead character. Making her the main objective of the expansion would probably be an overkill but I am sure they will find some reason to save the world again.
Blizzard should decomission Leah for good. She played her role in Diablo 3. We don't need ghost saving quests.
agreed, i am hopeful they won't turn Diablo into a soap opera like they've done with SC2. Let dead people stay dead. Or corrupted forever.
I hate to be in a trolling mood but wouldnt this mean Diablo should be dead long ago? Instead he keeps coming back again and again and despite him being dead "forever" after D3 I am pretty sure he will be back yet again if Blizzard will decide to push this franchise ahead in the future :Thumbs Up:
I am sorry, but the analogy with SC2 is weak. In SC2 Blizzard is building up a love story between Raynor and Kerrigan. Something that would fit the term "soap opera" better. How this story arch will evolve we will still have to see. And Leah? Yes, she did serve her main purpose in D3. But how would making her ghost (or something) appear somewhere in an expansion would make Diablo a "soap opera"? If they would make D3:Exp about going to hell to save Leah and bring her back alive I would at least understand the concern. But since I doubt such scenario I seriously think some people are overreacting. IMO we need more continuous characters in the franchise. I am still quite upset becouse they decommissioned Cain. Yeah, perhaps it was his time but he was so iconic for the series. Tyrael is mortal now? Expect him to go mental and die as a final boss in Diablo 4. That is actually a cliche that is used far more often by Blizzard than a "soap opera" cliche.
Would you guys feel any differently if we it were Cain we were bringing back as opposed to Leah?
I don't think that Diablo's storyline resembles a soap opera in any way. From what was revealed in the cinematics, I was pretty surprised at how things actually turned out. It will definitely be interesting to see where they continue the story in the expansions. I can't wait to see how the entire story from D1-D3 comes to an end and where they plan to take D4.
The idea of saving Leah kind of cheapens the tragedy of her character. Although, she may have more to offer the plot if, let's say, we venture into the Black Abyss to kill Tathamet in the second expansion. Still have mixed feelings about the idea though.
Yes, I agree it does cheapens the tragedy. But I also think that main purpose of Leahblo was the plot twist by itself. They wanted to surprise the gamers as much as they could. "Whoa!? What!? Her!? Diablo!?". This plan went south becouse they gave too many hints and then there was this whole flop with datamined corrupted Leah texture. So many people around the community suspected this already last year.
However I also think that making her character tragic could serve as a motivation mechanism. Either by planting a seed for revenge or for "redemption". In Final Fantasy VII Aerith's death fitted so well becouse it really made a lot of players mad at Sephiroth and that added a lot more satisfaction from chasing and eventually killing him. And about Leah? Well, I am pretty sure that several people would just like "dead things to stay dead" but there is also a big other bunch of people who would like to see her (and Cain as well) again. Perhaps she is a tormented ghost somewhere in hell now. Setting that ghost free would "feel good" for many players. A quest with the scope of Izual from D2 would be good. And dont worry guys, Blizzard will not make "save the princess Leah" a goal of a new game. There will be some big fat and angry demon waiting for us as usual. Leah or Cain (dont forget about poor old Marius! :QQ:) would be just plot devices.
I wouldn't mind saving her soul from eternal torment so it could ascend somewhere (heaven even?), but bringing her back to mortal life would definitely feel cheap.
Or maybe it's just because she's a whiny b**** I'd rather see stay dead. You could say the same of Aeris too...

Watching the live stream for the launch event and a bunch of information was just confirmed about the game and the lore for me, without having looked at other spoilers. I still can't see the whole picture, all of the dots for example, but it's been the first time I've ever cared about the story in a game this much.

I'm feeling a Death Themed Expansion. We've been to Hell (twice), we've been to Heaven, now let's go to the netherworld, the next world, the hereafter, or wherever dead people go. Let's go accross a Styx like River on a Ferry,. Let's explore various places in a world of the Dead, whether it be the Greek Underworld, Valhalla, the Happy Hunting Ground, who knows? Let's save the souls of Leah, and Aiden and Albrecht while we're at it, and have Cain pull an ObiWan. Maybe meet a few others from the past. Oh, and let them rest in peace. I'd rather they stayed dead.
I'd bet on both Malthael (as the Angel of Death since Tyrael stole his chair) and Trag'oul as major players, even adversaries (both could have been sent over the edge by the destruction of the Worldstone).
As for a class, well, this would be an ideal situation to bring back the Necro, if that's an option, but if not (I really do think that the WD has kinda replaced it), I can think of a few different options. A Black Knight (cross between a Death Knight and a Paladin, a protector of the Dead), a Priest (Egyptian style, big into life and death magic, creates golems, heals, and can do both light and Dark, gets into contests with Moses).

Well they did leave open the black soulstone. Since it kind of just falls off into the clouds in heaven after diablo disintegrates.
Well they did leave open the black soulstone. Since it kind of just falls off into the clouds in heaven after diablo disintegrates.
What ever story line they go with, they almost certainly will do something with unleashing the Evils from the black soul stone. At one point in Act 2 you can read some of Cain's journals and he talks about the Prime and Lesser Evils. When he mentions Mephisto he says something along the lines of " If he is brought back into this world destruction will await us", sounded an awful lot like foreshadowing to me.

Actually if you watch the final cinematic, you can make out the Black Soulstone dissolving into dust, meaning the Prime Evils are probably done. Which saddens me. I liked Mephisto. =[
Though I swear I see a pair of eyes in the upper-right as the clouds break.

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
All in the Forger's wake is left bereft and fallow
Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the dark Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

i would much rather have to fight Imperious. i was disapointed how the confrontation happened, with him basiclly dieing/ drained of power by diablo so you cannot fight him. i feel he will be in the expansion as at least a plot point...maybe he comes to stop us from further interfering with souls themselves
Oh come on, Adria isn't THAT strong, she's just cunning.
I'm guessing that perhaps Imperius was corrupted and we'll have to fight him, or maybe Malthael. It has to be someone who has already been introduced to the story.
