It's wishful thinking...But I believe that Imperius will be a character that we will have to confront or encounter at some point in the game. Diablo's always been quite one sided about painting Hell as the bad guy- Richard Knaak gave us a snippet of how Angels weren't exactly the goody two shoes we expect them to be in 'The Veiled Prophet' - I'm hoping this vibe is reiterated in Diabo III's storyline and encounters.
Also, That silhouette with the fiery wings looks quite demonic in a way if you manage to zoom in- the armor seems quite scaly and uncharacteristic. My first impression was Inarius...
Either way...if we manage to see, hear and learn something more about Inarius, Imperius, the Angiris Council, Trag'Oul, Uldyssian and the Nephalem- i'll be greatly satisfied
Indeed we technically the Nephalem- but no longer representative of them- but instead an extremely dumbed down version. The return to said status and powers of old would be immensely interesting. From a speculative point, it's probably going to be the premise of the story/character development in Diablo III.
It is more than likely that the character will gain immense power and eventually grow to be strong enough to fight both Angels and Demons in the same fashion as described in the final battle of 'The Veiled Prophet' . Would be cool to kick some demon ass then some angel ass!
Well it's an interesting dynamic twist in the story. One always assumes that it's all about demon bashing- the Sin War books seems to have turned that notion on its back and shown us that even angels are a threat to the beings of Sanctuary. So its only human to assume that we'll get to face down something angelic. I for one think it'll make for a very nice twist Something quite unique.
Well yeah the Catholic Church has alot to be angry with I don' think this would really stir any dire situation. If a game like Black and White can go around without serious criticism, and Diablo can go on as it has, I think we shouldn't have to worry too much :).
This seems very plausible, and opens up to a very VERY cool game
Sanctuary is open for Demons to find (or Angels of course), but we get to play a generation of Nephalem that is beginning to grow in power!!
I just listened to the Blizzcast episode 5 and wish I had listened to it earlier .....
Also regarding some of the theories about war on sanctuary, Jay Wilson made some interesting comments about ... the tone of the game really, but might reveal some plot spoilers as well...
"And, we've made a conscious effort to make sure that the tone gets worse- one of the things that we really want to tell a story of, basically, the coming apocalypse, and it works best if there's a contrast, you know, if things get worse in act two and act three, and act four, and visually, as well as just story-wise then it makes a big difference in kind of, how the tone feels, it feels like you get the nice contrast, or contrast between an idyllic world even though I wouldn't call any Diablo world that we've created, idyllic. But, for Diablo, it's probably idyllic, and then you know, at the end, just hell let loose."
Im not sure if it has been said in this forum yet(way to many posts to read), but maybe the reason baal didnt destroy the world stone was because imperius was in legion with the prime evils and he made baal corrupt it so that tyreal would destroy the world stone hence giving imperious a reason to condemn tyreal before the council. Then being able to strip tyreal of his powers and banish him to sanctuary,(the falling meteor is the act of tyreal losing powers and falling to earth) it would give him free reign to control the vote of the council and send the angels to war against sanctuary?? my personal opinion
But I'm not sure about the thing with Baal! It doesn't make sense for Baal to destroy the Worldstone, because Sanctuary will be opened for both Heaven and Hell. For this reason, Baal wanted to corrupt the Worldstone, so that the Sanctuary remains hidden from the High Heavens, but opened to the forces of Hell.
i cant explain that but i think an allegience is necserry between the primes and imperious in this case
The prime evils plan to betray imperious and whilst the angels are attacking sanctuary they rally demons and attack the heavens that is why they corrupted the soulstone.... and that would explain why the primes would obey an angel??? any good??
I havent read every single post in this thread, but I havent noticed much talk of the possibility that the angel could be Inarius. I havent read all of the books so maybe there is something in one of the books i havent read that could sum up why it may not be a valid theory.
I have read the Sin War Trilogy, Demonsbane, and The Black Road. At the end of the Sin War trilogy Mephisto took Inarius to hell to torture to make up for Mephistos loss of both Lucion and Lilith.
They also all agreed that they would set back everyone's memories so they would not remember the Sin War and also took away there powers (except for Mendelyn). And both Hell and Heaven agreed to not do anything to influence Sanctuary so they could be observed and live out their lives as they had chosen. To "seal the deal" Mephisto left his mark at the base of what was the Cathedral of Light I believe.
Seeing as Inarius built Sanctuary and the Worldstone and Sanctuary seems to be such a vital ground to take in the battle of heaven vs hell. I would imagine Hell would take advantage of having the maker of Sanctuary in their posession and either bribe or torture him to get whatever useful information he may have.
Nobody seemed to know what would happen if the worldstone was destroyed, but i would imagine if anyone would know it would be the person who created it.
I noticed in one of the pictures when the angel has come down there appear to be symbols below his feet. Perhaps they are the symbols from when Mephisto left his mark and the reason the angel landed there is because that is the place where he left.
I dont know. I am kind of rambling at this point. Im at work right now. Ill try to collect my thoughts and post a more cohesive thought later if this is too jumbled.

I think the reason Inarius is generally ruled out, at least more so than Imperius is because of this description of him from the D1 manual.
He bound Inarius with tremendous chains and slowly tore the wings from the back of the angel. Great barbed hooks were then used to stretch out the once glowing skin and his features were distorted by vile powers. Many of the followers of Inarius were given as gifts to Baal and Diablo, but the rest were molded to match the bloated image of the now crippled angel. To this day, Inarius said to be trapped in Hell within a chamber of mirrors, his eyelids torn from his face as he is forced to gaze upon his misshapen form for all eternity. His misguided followers now serve as Hell's taskmaster taking the anguish of their lost glory out upon the bodies of others.
The angel seems to still have wings and is in pretty good condition. So unless the D1 manual isn't canonical anymore I don't think it's Inarius.
I noticed that but people seem to think it's too far fetched.

Yeah i noticed that..cool find!
i think its imperius without the doubt, but the question is does he appear in the tristram cathedral? or is it just tyrael..
I think Imperius and Tyrael go at it and Imperius throws Tyrael down into the Cathedral.
OR Imperius decides to take matters of Sanctuary into his own hands and flys down there himself.
Good point. Because we do know that it took a considerable amount of Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal's power just to get to Sanctuary in the first place....
They were banished by the two "lesser" head demons (i'm too lazy to look up their names right now, one with a B and yeah) it's why they were spreading chaos across sanctuary and the Horadrim were founded.
We know that angels can't stay in sanctuary for long (Act 3 cinematic of D2 when Tyrael says that the power that holds him to Sanctuary is fading fast and he can't stay)...so how is it that Imperius could come to Sanctuary and stay while retaining power?
That is what the soulstones did for the Prime Evils... They allowed them to anchor to the mortal plane and retain great amounts of power
Any ideas on how Imperius could do this? Maybe a shard from the Worldstone? Or maybe it isn't needed any longer since the Worldstone is destroyed?
i agree. unless i'm wrong, Inarius made the worldstone to hide this world from The High Heavens and The Burning hells and prevent them from staying for long periods of time. so if the worldstone got destryed maybe Imperius comes to destroy Sanctuary.
The Tyrael is corrupt theory was really starting to wear on me...I know its still speculation at this point but I doubt if thats the way the developers decided to take the plot direction...
This theory on the other hand makes ALOT of sense and seems very practical.
Imperius always stuck out to me when reading the books and it would be badass to see him in-game. Maybe the angel that is on the front of the diablo 3 website isn't Tyrael...but in fact Imperius?? i don't know, I'll have to go back and look at it more closely.
This is a good theory but on the diablo 3 website it is Tyrael because there is a wallpaper of that same front page and it says that it's tyrael.

Maybe Imperius will join forces with Hell, and we have to fight against their destrucion of Sanctuary. With a bit help from Tyrael again I hope
I just read a bit from the "Diablo Wiki" ...

or is that the old church ? Just saying because I noticed some people were saying they didn't see a hole in the roof on those other images.
I got it from the diablo wiki, I'm not sure where it is from exactly.

Yea the Sin War is supposed to be the most canonical and it only mentions that Mephisto tortured Inarius, so it's possible.
If the D1 manual is canonical also though, I find it hard to think it may be Inarius.
Inarius would be a cool addition to the game though.
But my bet is leaning toward Imperius.
