Well when exactly was the pact broken that takes place at the end of The Veiled Prophet? I'm wondering if they gave any mention to it since I haven't finished reading all the books yet.
To me it's not logical that it would be Imperius in the meteor for the simple fact that Heaven already knew Sanctuary existed for over 3,000 years; why would Imperius come down to Sanctuary for any other reason then to destroy it completely? I suppose it's possible, but why now? The destruction of the World Stone? The only think it ever did that affected the Angels was mask it's existence from them. But like I said they already knew, so why would Imperius feel like he had to come down personally? I think it's much more logical that Tyrael has fallen, because they give you no other explanation in the final Diablo 2 cinematic or the Diablo 3 one to hint to the player how Diablo comes back, unless you take stock into them showing us the scene where Tyrael destroys the World Stone again.
Also, if we assume that the meteor is something other than a meteor crash landing to earth (i.e Tyrael), then why would Imperius be crash landing anywhere? The Angels from the books seemed to have no problems coming through cracks in the sky into Sanctuary so why all of a sudden does Imperius have this complicated landing into Sanctuary? The meteor - again if we assume it's not just a metoer - suggests that the character in question is in some kind of weakened state if you will. This is not Imperius
1- Sanctuary in fact it's in a different dimension from hell and heaven
2- soulstones keep the prime demons attached to sanctuary, without the need of spending energy
3-tyrael DOES spend energy
4-tyrael is no longer part of the angiris council
5-heaven declare war to sanctuary, leaded by imperius
6- the meteor is diablo in his true form(there is no "up" heaven "down" hell...)
7- the "dimensional gates" are open since the destruction of the worldstone
8- tyrael isn't "good". he thinks that nephalem(humans) choose orden instead of chaos.
Yea. IF it werent for Marius...bastard...He got what he deserved!

I think the angel with the winged helm is Imperius...for as most of you should know, usually war lieutenants/commanders wear winged helms...
Ex:The four riders of the apocalypse, the rider War wears that helm...and if you play WoW you should know that The Four Horsemen bosses are made in the image of The four riders of the Apocalypse, and thane kor'thazz wears that kind of helm :)(atleast i think it was thane kor thazz :D)
I think that bloated picture is inarius. I read somewhere (*I think d1 manual) that they said his image was now bloated. So he could be fat now becouse of Mephisto.

Good theory, though I have to admit I don't see Imperius acting against the wills of the Angris council who voted 3-2-1 to Leave Sanctuary to its own fate.
Granted, Tyrael has had a role in Sanctuary, but a very behind the scenes role, not one that truly fits with Imperius.
Also, the harbinger from the heavens to me just means the meteor is falling from the sky not the HIGH HEAVENS.

Ok, i've read ALL the thread... so i think:
4-tyrael is no longer part of the angiris council
8- tyrael isn't "good". he thinks that nephalem(humans) choose orden instead of chaos.
Ok, where does 4 come from? I just finished ALL the books and there is nothing about Tyrael not being on the council.
8-I disagree. Tyrael is definitely good from the nephalem's perspective. He would be perfectly happy with leaving Sanctuary the hell alone if the Hells would just leave it alone. His only concern is Sanctuary becoming a staging ground from which to attack the high heavens.
Also,
I believe it is in general easier for demons from the hells to enter Sanctuary do to the summonings of the Vijari then it is for the angels to enter sanctuary.

Take the stone and run!"

Tyrael is pretty pessimistic himself isn't he..
This theory is pretty nice, but I like the one that says Tyrael will be bad (or reveal himself as being bad) halfway through D3 =D in a spectacular way.. would be cinematic..
Hate to post in an older thread, but it's stickied and I think my view is offering something new (and concrete), so this isn't pointless thread necromancy:
I am still open to the possibility of Imperius somehow being implicated as an enemy that shows up in D3, but it seems very clear through reading Moon of the Spider that whoever this archangel is with fiery wings, he is NOT an enemy. He is present throughout the novel, and aids Zayl and Lady Salene in keeping Astrogha from returning fully to Sanctuary -- he is described distinctly as having 'fiery wings'.
If this is indeed Imperius, he has changed his mind about Sanctuary's existence.

Man I gatta get moon of the spider!!! The only book im missing now I know Zayles in it.....dang it man!!!
I like your idea if it is true then I guess Imperius did change his mind about us. Maybe after the vote on the Angris Council and he watched Tyraels actions he finally understood them as he watched us battle and defeat the prime evils

Yeah...I guess what kills this theory to me is that if Imperius could or would destroy Sanctuary, it seems as if he would have done so -- the vote took place 3000+ years ago, if he didn't have to abide by the vote, you'd think he would've acted by now.
I think the fact that the vote took place at all is an insight into some kind of law that governs the angels and the actions of the council -- which is to say, they wouldn't have voted if the vote didn't carry some power, if it didn't matter.
It strikes me that with humans having kiled three Prime Evils that perhaps the Angiris Council would rethink it's decision to let such a powerful force stick around. Maybe.
I dont think they would destroy sanctuary because there will still be angels and demons who think the war is stupid and will come together again and possibly creat the cycle all over again.

Sorry this thread was REALLY unupdated but I changed that part and I think the rest still fits.

Maybe thats another reason to explain how 2 primal evils in their corrupted forms could defeat an archangel...
I was referring to that particular scene. Maybe thats the reason...
1 weakened archangel against 2 prime evils weakened...
This sounds much better than 1 archangel full power against baal and diablo possesions...
