When you die, people say that if you either spend an eternity in bliss(heaven), or in damnation(hell). If this is the case, consider your body to be similar to a soulstone. What happens when your body can no longer sustain your life? Where does your life energy go?? Back to the essence from which it came(essentially God...unless you were corrupt and in which you spend an eternity amidst the most corrupt).
When the soulstones were destroyed, they were destroyed using the demonic equivalent to the holy magic that created them (there must always be a balance, and that's why you had to use the hellforge). This turn of events reset the balance to what it was before the soulstones were brought to fruition (the Prime Evils continued existence in the Abyss).
There are a million and one explanations as to what happens after Tyrael destroys the Worldstone (the reason behind the worldstone being introduced presents yet another plot hole). This is where the fun comes in
I think you're right with saying that our bodies are like soulstones, because the necromancers talk about the fleshy body merely being an anchor to this world. However, once that anchor is broken, it is said that the soul becomes a part of sanctuary and the Great Cycle of Being, rather than go to heaven or hell. Maybe if you pledge yourself really hard then you would, but, that part is never actually detailed.
And that other person is right about the Prime Evils being the essence of Destruction, Hatred, and Terror, and so can never truely be destroyed. They are more like concepts, or ideas, and you can't kill an idea. (I think there's a V for Vendetta quote to go with that - plus its a popular thing to say anyway, just google it)
I think there's a V for Vendetta quote to go with that
Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

I can't recall if it is stated how one enters Sanctuary's Heaven, either living or dead, but I would imagine there would be a small degree of Valhallaism there, only the truly worthy would be granted admittence.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
So then Sanctuary subscribes to the idea of Reincarnation, or the GREAT WHEEL. As in, you remain on sanctuary until you either gain ascendancy to Heaven or you are welcomed into the gates of HELL?

[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]"Fool! You have just ensured the doom of this world. You cannot even begin to imagine what you've set in motion this day. Go to the Temple of Light, in the eastern ciry of Kurast. There you will find the gate to Hell opened before you. You must find the courage to step through that gate Marius. Take the stone you hold to the Hellforge, where it will be destroyed. Now run! Take the stone and run!"
Not sure, Necros believe in a circle of life, I think the other classes might have their own views on the afterlife, but I can't recall if there is any mention of it, but I imagine the Barbarians might have some sort of "Valhalla", most similar sorts of peoples to them. But that doesn't necessairly mean Diablo Barbs do, but I like to think so. Or prehaps becoming an Ancient and guarding the summit of Mt Arreat is their Heaven.
I think the Paladins may have a view of how to enter heaven, they may believe that by "purifying" or cleansing the world of what they believe to be evil they can earn their place in heaven. Or some similar sort of thing, They are one of the classes that have a much deeper err what's the word I'm looking for... connection with the High Heavens. The other classes seem to be concern with other things than Heaven, and Hell. Druids, Necromancers and Sorceress (and Sorcerers too) seem more occupied with the pursuit of knowledge than worrying about whether or not they will spent eternity in the High Heavens, the Burning Hells or just as a corpse rotting in a hole somewhere.
And Heaven seems to be a pretty sealed off or lucrative place, you are forever taking portals or staircases into Hell but not Heaven. Heck by the time you finish LOD you have been to Hell twice!! once in D1 and again in D2, ok, so it techincally isn't with the same character, but surely beating the living daylights out of even one the Prime Evils earns you a visit at the least!
Or are mortals actually forbidden to enter the High Heavens? Angels are forbidden from meddling in the affairs of mortals (something Tyrael has done multiple times regardless of Heaven's laws), so prehaps mortals entering heaven is forbidden two.
'If I am forbidden from entering your place, shouldn't you be forbidden from entering mine' ?

The question though is, who is right? The all have different views on the afterlife, but how many can be true at the same time. Korlic, Madawc and Talic seem to have been given som special bonus in becoming "Ancients", rather close to the Norse legends.

I'm pretty sure we're not actually allowed into hell either per se
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
That would go along with the idea that Heaven and Hell are different planes of existence, rather then an afterlife perse'

Kinda wish Blizzard spent a bit more time on the Diablo lore and gave us these answers.
And yeh some Seer turns up tells them to go to Mt Arreat and they are virtually given the gift of immortality, it seems they can't die upon becoming an ancient.

Uldyssian became a part of Sanctuary - though he did it through his will.
Maybe everyone's beliefs are right? It seems like you can give up your soul to anyone, but if you don't, then you become a part of the Great Cycle of Being, which is related to Trag'oul. The Necromancers always say that death is merely another stage of life. So clearly there's somewhere that they go, but at the same time we know its possible that their souls can somehow aid heaven or hell, which leads us to assume that its also possible to go to Heaven or Hell when you die, but you would have to allow them to do it. Unless they eat you or something lol.
So like, if you're a devoted priest, your allowed in heaven? If you're devoted to Bul-Kathos, and you're strong, he has the power to make you an ancient?. If you believe in Trag'oul, you can go to the 'afterlife' place? (which is like default for everyone on sanctuary anyway).
Maybe.
BUT, we don't know that for sure. We still need to be explained to on how exactly we aid Heaven or Hell, whether we do it in this life or in the next life. Its possible that we do it in this life, and when we die noone goes to heaven or hell, but only to the 'afterlife' place that Trag'oul talks about. Angels could very well be lying, seducing us with our desire for heaven, and causes us to fight for them so we can go to such a 'heavenly' place.
Oh yeah, I definitely want real answers too.
But yeah, I pretty much agree with everything Elfen Lied said.
