I just bought the diablo battlechest today to get back into diablo because of diablo 3 coming out in the future and I want to get back into the old games. However I've run into a big problem.
Diablo 2//LoD does not seem to want to work with my windows vista ultimate 32bit version. It just does not even start. I keep getting a Error 22: A critical error has occured while initializing DirectDraw. I've tried installing the latest patch off of their site and then seeing if that helped, it didnt. I tried going into properties and running it as an administrator, that did not work. Tried using the options:
Run in 256 colors
Run in 640x480 screen resoltion
Disable visual themes.
Disable desktop composition
Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
Tried them all individually, combo's, all together... same error. Updated my video card which is a ASUS EAH3870. Everytime I do a video test with the game it tells me I cant run it. Which is really strange because I installed diablo 1 and tried that and it worked LOL. I mean I can play UT3 and crysis on high settings with my setup and its fine, and if diablo 1 works I dont see why diablo 2 cant either. Warcraft 3 works fine also.
Dont know what the issue here is. Can someone please give me any tips on what I can do to get this thing working while I wait for blizzard to send me an e-mail with more information? I would really appreciate it.

Reinstalled that shit 20 times, made no difference. When you say downgrade back, do you mean reinstall an old OS or is there an option in vista for that?

Windows "bug"sta has an awful habit of being unable to run old programs. Some work some don't.
I believe the new server pack will fix most of the problems, but no guarantee. Either Vista needs an update, or LOD does. or both do.
Personally I find XP (home or Pro) to do everything I need just fine. So I will stick with it, until such time as there is little option but to invest in Vista.

so idk what ur problem is uhh also make sure u dont run 3d card on vista use the 2d "not reccommended" setting that they allow you to do... it looks exactly the same but for some reason vista prefers taht u run it on a 2d card sry i cant be more help
Or since it mentions DirectDraw, you might want to try and change the Video settings for Diablo. Run the Video Test for Diablo, and change the setting from one to the other after the test finishes. I you have DirectDraw selected, pick Direct3D and vice versa.
I don't know if it's related, but it only takes a minute to test, so you could try it if you like.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

You tried reinstalling it, I presume?

1.) Go into c:\program files\diablo II\ or wherever you have the game installed.
2.) Right click on "game.exe" and go to properties.
3.) Click on "Compatibility" tab
4.) Place a check in the box that says "Disable Desktop Composition"
5.) Click Apply. Click Ok.
6.) Run the game! It should load and play normally once this option is checked.
